About the Author
John G. Neihardt (1881–1973) is known internationally for Black Elk Speaks and is a noted author in several genres. He is the author of A Cycle of the West and Knowledge and Opinion, both available from the University of Nebraska Press. Coralie Hughes is the granddaughter of John G. Neihardt and the head of the Neihardt Trust. Raymond J. DeMallie is the author or editor of numerous books, including The Sixth Grandfather: Black Elk’s Teachings Given to John G. Neihardt, available in a Bison Books edition.

Eagle Voice is a master story teller

The premise of this book is that the author, a young man doing research about Native American history, becomes friends with a very old man who has lived through both the glory and misery himself. This old man agrees to share his knowledge and experience with his new "grandson" to be recorded in written form for posterity. During the many hours and days of sitting by the fire and smoking the sacred pipe we are invited into a fascinating world of the past. Eagle Voice ponders through his memories and tells stories that are often amusing, poignant and even at times awe inspiring.
Whether Eagle Voice was an actual individual or a composite of several shared histories, he is a master story teller. Through these true stories our eyes are opened to culture and custom that may be somewhat strange to ourselves but nonetheless deserving of our respect. I especially appreciated the reverence for nature and spirit which was so important to their everyday life. Also, whereas rebels are to be found in any culture, for the most part the native americans followed a very ethical code of conduct regarding such things as truth, responsibility and generosity. When they did things in the "Sacred Way" they had such faith that they did not fear death.
I get most of my books through Amazon but happened to pick this one up in a bookstore while visiting Medora, North Dakota. I'm certainly glad I did. The stories are good enough to go back and read again.

eagle voice remembers

Great book. But I expected as much from a book by John G. Neihardt. Any one interested in native history and the american west should read this book.
