The Legend Continues...
Prematurely aged by the use of a power known as vitra, Ari now heads the Users, the secretive cabal that strives to protect humanity from those who would enslave them - the gols.
The User ranks were decimated shortly after Hoodwink vanished ten years ago, and she rebuilt the group from the ground up. In that time, she'd given everything she had to the Users, and human society in general. Body. Mind. Soul. For what?
It hadn't mattered. She hadn't changed a thing. The world still died a little every day. The snowstorms worsened, the cold became colder. Human enslavement continued. The Forever Gate remained standing, hemming them all in as it always would.
And then there was The Drop, a relatively recent phenomenon that involved human beings dropping dead for no apparent reason. Not just one at a time, but hundreds throughout the city, all at once.
Society was falling apart at the seams, despite her best efforts. Despite her attempts to seize power from Jeremy, the mayor.
Ari was ready to throw in the sack and nominate her replacement. She could no longer lead the Users. She had failed. She was far too old.
And then, ten years after she last saw him, Ari receives a message from the father she believed long dead.

Brilliant!
By Amazon Customer
The Forever Gate 2 was a great follow-up to the first book in the series. Here the mystery of the "Outside" continues, but now we are given a glimpse of just what that outside looks like. The characters are more fully developed in this book, now with the focus shifting to Hoodwinks' daughter. Every chapter has something suspenseful happening, making the book was very hard to put down, and Isaac's writing style flows like few others. To top it all off, the editing was superb. As a fellow Science Fiction and Fantasy author, I was able to honestly say upon finishing Isaac's first two novels that there's a lot to admire about his books. And as a reader, I was able to honestly say that I was never bored and never disappointed. Forever Gate 1&2 were both a very entertaining read! These books are a must-have for any Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan. The only negative thing I have to say, is that we still have to wait for Forever Gate 3!

Captivating! An Expertly Crafted Story Beckons!
By Mac Briggs Johnston
(**** This review has no spoilers ****)
This story will inspire a gamut of emotions in you, as it did for me, from sheer joy and captivation, to excitement, all the way to bringing you to the brink (or over the brink) of tears! You will find yourself laughing out loud, sometimes at the deftly woven humor, sometimes at the fantastic and amazing twists and turns the plot takes. The fact that Hooke can do all this speaks volumes about his capacity as a storyteller, easily catapulting him into that realm that is the exclusive abode of the best fantasy/science fiction writers.
This second instalment of "The Forever Gate" series strengthens and complements the first book, fleshing out the plot and characters further. It is mainly written from the perspective of Hoodwink's daughter Ari, providing a fresh, fascinating slant to the world, and the opportunity for the reader to perceive events from a female point of view.
Like the first, this second book is steeped in multi-level metaphors, causing the reader to question what is real and what is not; what really matters and what does not. An air of mystery permeates the book, and the origins of the world are suggested by one character, yet it remains to be seen if his perception is the true one.
The writing is exceptional, in that it conveys just the right balance of action, emotion and plot, while catching the reader in a tight net woven of suspense. Hooke's indefatigable concentration is remarkable, and he continually manages to compel the reader, always filling the pages with excellence and intrigue.
It sounds cliché, but I really can't wait for the next instalment!

Better than the first - give Forever Gate a go!
By Amy Joe White
Avid readers have an inherent judgment placed on the length of books. We assume that shorter books are appropriate for beginning or infrequent readers, and only lengthier books are fit for those who read with a constant passion. The Forever Gate series goes out to prove this idea wrong, and it does so with aplomb. The Forever Gate series challenges many ideas about how books should function - from length to genre, readers will find themselves questioning things they hadn't thought to question - including themselves.
If you've read the first book, you'll have a good idea of what's coming in this second installment. While the first book was from the perspective of the the character Hoodwink, this installment is on the journeys of his daughter, Ari. Now an old woman, Ari waits for her father to return from a world beyond the walls of the snowy city - the Outside. When he returns, and drags her into a world where reality meets conjecture and philosophy.
The novel blends fantasy and sci-fi in an intriguing way, all without wasting a word. With mind-bending questions that rival the Matrix and as complex and creative a world as The Wheel of Time series, The Forever Gate questions what it is to be real. In a world where everything is malleable, does our love for one-another remain?
One glorious little treat of this book (and indeed the series as a whole) is how new terminology walks carefully in the balance between over-usage and under-usage. The fantasy/sci-fi genre has always struggled with maintaining a balance: novels must introduce new, wonderful, and foreign material into reader's lives, but also fight to invite the audience rather than estrange them. It's gotten to the point where I personally keep a subconscious eye out for over-usage (or not enough). I was surprised, then, that The Forever Gate 2 never overloaded me or kept me guessing on what things were or what terminology meant. This follows suite from the first book, where new objects and people were announced and given just enough of an introduction to keep me intrigued, on my toes, and ready to learn more.
While you'll certainly run into what can be considered simple descriptors and dialogue, I found that it was perfect for the setting and character - the protagonist is a simple woman brought into complex matters, and it's only right the book should closely follow her observations in her own style.
Summing it up, then, I really did find myself enjoying this book. There were a few shortcomings here and there: word repetition, for instance, is a bit of a pet peeve of mine, and writers tend to cling to their favorite words like salt and pepper. While the author clearly fought with word choice here and there, the overall outcome was a pleasure to read. Some of the bits seemed a bit rushed... but on the whole, each section got the time it deserved. I will say I did enjoy this one even more than the first book.
If you're a fantasy fan but love your sci-fi just as much, give The Forever Gate series a go. It's a light read that will still challenge some of your most basic ideas of the world and yourself.
