Geschichte der Hexenprozesse - Band 2 (German Edition), by Wilhelm Gottlieb Soldan, Heinrich Heppe

Not wearin' high heels, but love reading about them!
By Tina B.
I love Rhonda's new book "High Heels in High Place"! I really don't wear high heels now that I'm 45 year old, but I love reading about them. Of course it's not all about shoes it's all about our relationship with Jesus Christ. On page 23 I underlined "it's all about being filled up with Jesus! It's about having a testimony of the power of God at work in a life." This book has made me laugh my "shoes" off and check my walk with Christ at the same time. Oh yea, and I did notice there's a discussion guide in the back. Way to go Rhonda!

Devotionals for high heels or slippers time
By Armchair Interviews
Reviewed by Amanda Schafer

Are you a fashion diva who has a special place in your heart for shoes, but also a special place in your heart for the Lord? Do you want to find a great way to connect with God while reading a book that helps you understand, in terms you can relate to? High Heels is for you! Divided into several parts (with 4 chapters in each part), this book can be read straight through or used as a daily (or weekly) devotional book.

Rhea uses fantastic analogies regarding shoes and spiritual issues...it's hard not to laugh at her `shoe' humor! But one really great thing that Rhea does with this book is start you out small, with small doses of spirituality, and she slowly leads you into greater and deeper subjects. Then before you know it, you're experiencing a deep relationship with the Lord that you never knew was possible.

While reading this book, it was hard for me to read it straight through...I had to read it in portions in order to digest all of the information that was laid out before me. It sort of got overwhelming if I tried to read too much at one time, but if I read in bits and chunks, it was much easier to understand.

Since I'm not a shoe fanatic, however, the constant shoe analogy kind of got annoying after a bit. I could handle some, but too much of a good thing is simply too much. However, I can easily see how this book would be a great addition to a personal bookshelf in order to pull out and use for women's group devotionals.

I believe a large group could really benefit from this angle of spiritual insight.

Armchair Interviews says: Grab your comfortable shoes and start reading.

A thought provoking and insightful read!
By Dr FJ
I was recommended to read this book as my mum has started to suffer from mild arthritis and i wanted to know what was available aside from the usual Western Medicine. I work in healthcare within the NHS (although I am not a Medical Doctor) and from what i have learnt since my mothers troubles it seems symptomatic relief is really all that is available. This book is an eye opener with clearly laid out sections to guide the reader into the details of what is possible. I would suggest his book for those new with the condition and their loved ones as well as those veterans who are managing as well as they can with what western medicine has to offer.

An Introduction To Chaotic Dynamical Systems (Studies in Nonlinearity), by Robert Devaney

The study of nonlinear dynamical systems has exploded in the past 25 years, and Robert L. Devaney has made these advanced research developments accessible to undergraduate and graduate mathematics students as well as researchers in other disciplines with the introduction of this widely praised book. In this second edition of his best-selling text, Devaney includes new material on the orbit diagram fro maps of the interval and the Mandelbrot set, as well as striking color photos illustrating both Julia and Mandelbrot sets. This book assumes no prior acquaintance with advanced mathematical topics such as measure theory, topology, and differential geometry. Assuming only a knowledge of calculus, Devaney introduces many of the basic concepts of modern dynamical systems theory and leads the reader to the point of current research in several areas.

Good introduction to the beginning student
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This book gives a quick and elementary introduction to the field of chaotic dynamical systems that could be read by anyone with a background in calculus and linear algebra. The approach taken by the author is very intuitive, lots of diagrams are used to illustrate the major points, and there are many useful exercises throughout the book. It could serve well in an undergraduate mathematics course in dynamical systems, and in a physics undergraduate course in advanced mechanics. The author emphasizes the mathematical aspects of dynamical systems, and readers will be well prepared after finishing it to read more advanced books on dynamical systems.
Chapter 1 introduces one-dimensional dynamics, with the analysis of the quadratic map given particular attention. Called the logistic map in some circles, this very important dynamical system has been the subject of much study, and exhibits generically the properties of chaotic dynamical systems. The author also gives a brief review of some elementary notions in calculus needed for the chapter, making the book even more accessible to a wider readership. The important concept of hyperbolicity is discussed in the context of one-dimensional maps and a good discussion is given on symbolic dynamics. Structural stability, which is really useful only in dynamical systems in higher dimensions, is treated here. The intuition gained in one-dimension is invaluable though before moving on to higher-dimensional examples. Sarkovskii's theorem, which states that a one-dimensional dynamical system with a period three periodic orbit has periodic orbits for all other periods, is proved in detail. In addition, the Schwarzian derivative, so important in complex dynamics, is defined here. The author also gives an introduction to bifurcation theory, which again, is most interesting in high dimensions, and introduces the concept of homoclinicity in this discussion. Maps of the circle and the all-important Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms, are treated in this chapter also. The author introduces the reader briefly to the idea of genericity when discussing Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. Kneading theory, so important in the mathematical theory of dynamical systems, is introduced here also.
In chapter 2, the author generalizes the results to higher dimensions, and begins with a review of linear algebra and some results from multivariable calculus, such as the implicit function theorem and the contraction mapping theorem. This is followed by a treatment of the dynamics of linear maps in two and three dimensions. Whereas the canonical example of one-dimensional dynamics is represented by the logistic map, in higher-dimensional dynamics this is represented by the Smale horseshoe map. The author carefully constructs this map and details its properties. Then he takes up the hyperbolic toral automorphisms (or Anosov systems as they are called in some books). Both the Smale horseshoe map and the toral automorphisms are excellent, easily understandable examples of higher dimensional dynamics and the associated symbolic dynamics.
The concept of an attractor is also treated in chapter 2 in the context of the solenoid and the Plykin attractor. Both of these are of purely mathematical interest, but by studying them the physicist reader can get a better understanding of what to look for in actual physical examples of attractors (or the more exotic concept of a strange attractor). The author also gives a proof of the stable manifold theorem in dimension two. This is the best part of the book, for this theorem is rarely proved in textbooks on chaotic dynamics, the proof being delegated to the original papers. However, the proof in these papers is extremely difficult to get through, and so the author has given the reader a nice introduction to this important result, even though it is done only in two dimensions. This is followed by a very understandable discussion of Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. In addition, the author introduces the Hopf bifurcation, of upmost importance in applications, and introduces the Henon map as an application of the results obtained so far.
The last chapter of the book is a brief overview of complex analytic dynamics. Complex dynamical systems are very important from a mathematical point of view, and they have fascinating connections with number theory, cryptography, algebraic geometry, and coding theory. The author reviews some elementary complex analysis and then reintroduces the quadratic maps but this time over the complex plane instead of the real line. The Julia set is introduced, and the reader who has not seen the computer graphical images of this set should peruse the Web for these images, due to their beauty. The geometry of the Julia set and the associated complex polynomial maps are given a fairly detailed treatment by the author in the space provided.

Excellent book; unique in its accessibility and coverage of deep results
By Alexander C. Zorach
This book is an introduction to dynamical systems defined by iterative maps of continuous functions. It doesn't require much advanced knowledge, but it does require a familiarity and certain level of comfort with proofs. The basic idea of this book is to explore (in the context of iterative maps) the major themes of dynamical systems, which can later be explored in the messier setting of differential equations and continuous-time systems. While this book doesn't discuss differential equations directly, the techniques used here can be transferred (with considerable work and thought) to that setting. Someone wanting an elementary book covering differential equations as dynamical systems might want to check out the excellent multi-volume work by J. Hubbard; the combination of that work with this book would provide the background to tackle the tougher and less-accessible texts dealing with chaotic systems of differential equations.

Although this is a pure math book, the book does mention key applications and motivation behind the material; applied mathematicians will find this book quite useful, not necessarily because of the choice of topics but just because it greatly helps develop ones' intuition. The material is presented in a way that gives the student a sense of the big picture--what the theorems mean, how they fit together. Proofs are rigorous but as easy to follow as I have seen them in this subject.

The choice and order of subjects is also both practical and fun. The book begins with 1-dimensional systems and explores just about everything interesting that happens with them (including Sarkovski's Theorem, one of the most bizarre and surprising mathematical results), before moving into two-dimensions and then dynamics in the complex plane.

The bottom line? This book would be excellent both as a textbook and for self-study. If you're interested in this subject at all, this is a book you will want on your shelf. I know of no other book on the subject that covers such deep material while remaining as accessible.

The best starting point.
By A Customer
This book covers almost every aspect of theory of discrete dynamical systems and by far the easiest explains and proofs with useful exercises, anyone with solid calculus and linear algebra background shouldn't have any problem absorbing this material and is highly recommended to whom wants to know about the theory of chaos from the scratch.

Dangerous Games: Ice Climbing, Storm Kayaking, and Other Adventures from the Extreme Edge of Spor ts, by Andrew Todhunter

In this elegant and exciting collection Andrew Todhunter, himself an extreme sportsman and the author of the critically acclaimed Fall of the Phantom Lord, takes readers along as men and women push themselves to their limits in the world’s riskiest sports.

In several of these essays Todhunter writes from personal experience, joining his subjects as they free fall from cliffs, wriggle through narrow underground crevices, and dive deep beneath the ice of a frozen lake. In these adrenaline-laced accounts of extreme sportsmanship, Todhunter captures not only the thrill of conquest but the deep pleasure of being someplace few others have gone as well.

From Booklist
Atlantic Monthly columnist Todhunter has compiled his articles on outdoor adventures and extreme sports into a stunning collection. Though these stories are from real life, they read like short fiction, vignettes of incredible characters and their even more incredible pastimes. The first story, for instance, describes a climb with an accomplished alpinist. What's amazing about this account is not so much the climb itself, nor the fact that Todhunter makes the trek himself, but, instead, the host's moving reflections on the falling death of his protege and friend several years earlier. Todhunter weaves the excitement of what the adventurers do with the poignancy of who they are--whether it's a 50-year-old father climbing a mountain, a 28-year-old utility worker scuba diving under 18 inches of ice, or a middle-aged woman crawling through California caves. A real gem of adventure work. Mary Frances Wilkens

From Kirkus Reviews
Top-draw extreme sports writing from Todhunter (Fall of the Phantom Lord, 1998), unadorned and vital and appealingly decorous. This collection of magazine pieces, mostly drawn from The Atlantic Monthly, showcases Todhunter's talents as a chronicler of extreme sports-some of which he partakes of himself. Although the author now has a family to bevel his more flamboyantly dangerous sporting appetites, that doesn't deter him from a short, roped free fall off a cliff or hairy icefall ascents-but he draws the line at storm kayaking in the Pacific off northern California. He writes without bravado, without false modesty or striking poses. He is simply fascinated (bewitched, maybe) by dangerous sports, by what motivates people to engage in them. But there are no clear answers to the question of his own motivation, and just disturbing intuitions: about the aesthetics of danger, or regarding his convictions that some climbs are "worth dying for," that "the wisdom of timidity reeks so powerfully of death." There is a passion for the genuine, whether that is winter climbing in the Scottish Highlands, which still feels a grizzled affair best done in hobnailed boots, or if a chainsaw is worth the price: "that what relieves us of our labor removes us from our lives. We grow more frail and dim-witted with each invention that outstrips us." The best piece of all concerns an activity made of magic rather than stark terror. It happens on-make that in-a frozen lake: Todhunter and a friend are ice diving and have inflated their suits so the buoyancy allows them to stand on the under-surface of the ice. They are tethered to tenders by a long rope a good distance away from the entry hole. The tenders start to pull: "The lines go taut and we begin to move, gaining speed. Howling through our regulators, we ski upside down across the ice."Todhunter at times misplaces his fear, though his artful talent for describing the telling moments in extreme sports, as well as their often-otherworldly settings, is everywhere. -- Copyright © 2000 Kirkus Associates, LP. Review
Praise for fall of The Phantom Lord

"In these days after the success of Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, Todhunter...himself a skillful climber, provides a useful primer not only on rock climbing but also on bouldering and alpine climbing, carefully delineating the different skills each sport demands. With his account of [world-class climber Dan] Osman's stunts, Todhunter mixes lengthy descriptions of his own daredevil exploits...[as] he tries to come to terms with why people do such things. It's enough to make you doubt, just a little, that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports."
-New York Times Book Review

"Todhunter takes up where Krakauer left off."
-The Wall Street Journal

"Todhunter has the writing style of a good climber on steep rock-calm, precise, and apparently effortless."
-Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect Storm

"A haunting read."
-Sports Illustrated

"Playing Sancho Panza to Dan Osman's Don Quixote, Andrew Todhunter produces some of the freshest and most original writing about climbing in recent memory."
-David Roberts, author of The Mountain of My Fear and Moments of Doubt

"Osman brings an aesthete's regard for form and balance to climbing, and it's clear from watching him through Todhunter's eyes that it's not just getting to the top that counts, it's how you get there."
-Washington Post

It doesn't get much better...
By A Customer
The cover is misleading. Many of the stories in the collection are not "Sport" at all. These are views into dangerous activities, which range from essays on rescue workers off the coast of Northern California to introspective musings on the chainsaw. Others are indeed sports, though not the type you view on ESPN; these are stories of individuals who have concocted their own unique flavor of excitement: from storm kayaking in the Pacific to leaping off high bridges. Todhunter is fascinated by risk and danger and the people who engage in these activities.
Whether climbing vertical ice or diving beneath frozen lakes, Todhunter delivers crisp, clean, first-hand insight, with a full shot of adrenaline in the mix. An experienced diver and climber, Todhunter plays at times neophyte, apprentice, novice, and savvy traveler (in measure with his experience) all with equal grace. He shares his far-flung interests in high-adrenaline experiences with a literary style that inspires rapt, hypnotic, page-turning awe.

what it's like to be there
By A Customer
Whether or not you are an ice climber, a diver for wrecks, or someone who explores the depths of caves, all of which the writer is, Todhunter can make you feel you've been there, often with amazing descriptions, sometimes beautiful, sometimes chilling. Cases in point, a couple of brief samples from the chapter called "Beneath the ice."
"Far above the triangle [cut through the ice of a Sierra lake]is aglow in the dimly translucent field of ice. Our lines stretch upward, vanishing. I give a firm tug: "Okay." A tug comes back fom my tender. "Acknowledged." The trail of air bubbles works its way to the surface, rumbling faintly. I take a deep breath and expel it with one quick contraction of the diaphragm. The body of air breaks into three spheres that flatten into mushrooms the diammeter of dinner plates, expanding as they climb. Surrounded by a host of smaller bubbles, 100 silver dollars, 1,000 dimes--twirling in their wake, the three upturned bowls of air catch the sun as they near the surface, gleam like mirrors, and disappear."
And its ending [as they come up]:"On the other side of the ice, our tenders set off like sled dogs on the run. The lines go aut and we begin to move, gaining speed. Howling through our regulators, we ski upside down across the ice.The wedge of blue sky suddenly appears, hurtling toward us. As I dive headfirst through the triangle I'm blinded. I look straight down into the sun."

John McPhee, David Roberts Mash Up
By Evan Tick
Todhunter writes with as much style and insight as John McPhee. Think of "Looking For a Ship" mixed with classic mountaineering stories that could have come from Roskelley or Roberts. Most adventure/extreme lifestyle books don't come close to the literary quality here - just a joy to read. His humble reflections, and his ability to capture the mood of these larger-than-life individuals, is what makes this a great book.

Operation Typhoon: Hitler's March on Moscow, October 1941, by David Stahel

In October 1941 Hitler launched Operation Typhoon the German drive to capture Moscow and knock the Soviet Union out of the war. As the last chance to escape the dire implications of a winter campaign, Hitler directed seventy-five German divisions, almost two million men and three of Germany's four panzer groups into the offensive, resulting in huge victories at Viaz'ma and Briansk - among the biggest battles of the Second World War. David Stahel's groundbreaking new account of Operation Typhoon captures the perspectives of both the German high command and individual soldiers, revealing that despite success on the battlefield the wider German war effort was in far greater trouble than is often acknowledged. Germany's hopes of final victory depended on the success of the October offensive but the autumn conditions and the stubborn resistance of the Red Army ensured that the capture of Moscow was anything but certain.

Review
"With a firm grasp of strategic, operational, economic, and logistical factors, Stahel has again laid bare German weaknesses and shattered the myth of the all-powerful Wehrmacht. The best sort of revisionism, Operation Typhoon dissects the material factors leading to ultimate German failure before Moscow, all the while integrating the personal aspect of the battle through deft use of the diaries and letters of German soldiers. An impressive achievement."
Stephen G. Fritz, author of Ostkrieg: Hitler's War of Extermination in the East

"David Stahel has written a detailed, carefully documented, and engaging analysis of the last great German offensive of 1941. All the elements of the German defeat are here, from macroeconomics, ideology, and criminality to logistics, intelligence, tactics, and weapons design. This is a fine complement to Stahel's works on Barbarossa and Kiev."
Geoffrey P. Megargee, author of War of Annihilation: Combat and Genocide on the Eastern Front, 1941

"Stahel's third book on Germany's 1941 Russian campaign demonstrates that focus on the operational level led to ignoring strategic considerations. Emphasis on force of will encouraged overlooking material problems. Defeat in front of Moscow was a consequence not of Hitler's interference, not even of Soviet resistance, but of the vaunted German army's internal weaknesses."
Dennis Showalter, author of Hitler's Panzers: The Lightning Attacks that Revolutionized Warfare

"David Stahel's new book on Operation Typhoon is his best yet. Wedding detailed archival research, an intimate knowledge of the secondary sources, and a gripping narrative, Stahel has set a new standard for scholarship on the Eastern Front. No student of the massive conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union should be without this book. A major addition to the literature."
Robert M. Citino, author of Death of the Wehrmacht: The German Campaigns of 1942

"Great detail ... Stahel succeeds in provoking some interesting new perspectives and ideas."
Daniel Pilfold, The Second World War Military Operations Research Group

"Stahel, as he has done with his previous two books, has fundamentally and correctly re-interpreted the latter stages of the Barbarossa campaign. It is a must-read for general and military historians."
David Glantz, Journal of Military History

"... combines strategic and economic context, statistics, operational analysis, and tactical-level accounts from individual soldiers in constructing a layered but highly readable narrative. It is a remarkable feat."
Richard R. Muller, World War II

"... a treasure trove of information regarding the late fall battles between the Germans and Soviets in 1941."
Adam Koeth, Armchair General

"Stahel incorporates in quantity the voices of German soldiers and outside observers."
Evan Mawdsley, War in History

"An in-depth new account."
Military History Magazine

An excellent command level overview
By Dave Schranck
The author extends his strategic coverage of his two previous books by covering Operation Typhoon with the same logic, flair and extensive research of those books.
To my surprise this book covers only the fighting and command decisions of October which primarily included the pocket battles of Vyazma and Bryansk while the next book will be devoted to the final advance on Moscow, ending on December 5th.(I'm hoping Mr Stahel will then write about the German defense of Zhukov's counter offensive.)

As a prelude to the main story, a recap of Operation Barbarossa and Guderian's run to Kiev is presented to bring the reader up to speed. A brief historical military summary of Germany going back to the 12th century is also given that includes the influence of Clausewitz Theory has on German commanders. Napoleon's attempts to conquer Russia also plays heavy on Hitler and other key officers. As usual the German perspective concerning operational, strategic and political aspects drive the narrative.

Also as usual, the author has performed a tremendous amount of research for he covers Operation Typhoon on a daily basis and include many battle facts on individual corps and divisions along with their respective commanders as they struggle to close and eliminate the pockets at Vyazma and Bryansk while 3rd PzA heads for Kalinin. In addition to showing the fanatical resistance of the Soviets in trying to escape their doom, Mr Stahel also clearly shows how disgruntled German commanders fought among themselves, a delusional OKH that wouldn't see the severity of fighting for what it was, rainy weather, impossible muddy roads, terrible logistics and lack of fuel would bring the German Army to an abrupt halt by the end of October. The AGC had not fully recovered from the fighting in August and September and with the casualties of October was in no position to tackle Moscow in 1941, especially in the disposition OKH had ordered. Forging a salient from Kalinin to Tula all the way to Moscow was just too unreasonable.

Once again it is shown that regardless of "winning battles", the German Army with its own problems and its inability to see the true cost of those victories were over extending themselves, suffering too many casualties and making too many strategic errors that would prevent the capture of Moscow in 1941 or ever. On the other side of the ledger, its shown how thousands of Russians escaped the pockets to fight another day as well as the stubborn resistance within the pockets that caused the Germans until almost the end of October to eliminate the pockets and devote their full attention on moving on Moscow. This resistance gave Zhukov time to improve defenses and bring reserves up to the line in sufficient levels to stop the Germans in early December. Though the coverage is predominately German, there is still sufficient coverage of Soviet responses, especially when Zhukov is in sector for the reader to have a good understanding of the overall campaign. It is clearly shown that in many local battles at the pockets and at Kalinin that the Soviets actually halted the German advance while causing massive casualties.

I believe the book is further enhanced in describing the operation and the positional stance of the author that the Germans were bleeding themselves white while advancing toward Moscow by the careful selection of excerpts from primary documents and the hundreds of first hand accounts chosen to back up his positions.

In addition to the excellent overview, the author presents 15 detailed maps drawn by David Glantz that show divisional deployments and progress. The series of maps clearly show the quick envelopment of Vyazma and Bryansk in the first week of the operation and then the subsequent slowing of the advance due to a myriad of reasons. The maps will definitely aid the reader in following the narrative and Mr Stahel includes map references on some of the key battles, letting the reader move quickly to the proper map. The book also includes a few tables and photos, a 67 page Notes Section and an impressive Bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The book closes with an Index. This material is invaluable if further study is desired.

Operation Typhoon dovetails logically with the author's two earlier books in both battlefield strategy as well as the economic and political arenas and if you enjoyed those books, you'll definitely enjoy this book. And if you haven't read those earlier books, the first chapter summarizes and will give you sufficient background knowledge so you won't miss a beat reading this book.

I find Mr Stahel's writing style interesting and effective; I find the story development and premise logical and hard to dispute. This book along with the author's earlier books provide key insight into the war and I highly recommend this book to all students of the Russo-German War.

Excellent book, his best yet!
By Koba
The title of this book is somewhat misleading. It is really about the Battle of Bryansk-Vyazma in October 1941, a gigantic double encirclement battle which was the second biggest German victory of the war, after the Battle of Kiev in September. The book's title should really have called attention to that fact, because there are very, very few books in English on Bryansk-Vyazma. The book thus fills an important gap in the literature.

I criticized his previous book, on Kiev, for not being tightly focused on its subject, and for having poor maps. I am happy to say this book does NOT have those problems. He sets the stage in his first tightly written chapter by describing what happened in the USSR from June to October, and the majority of the book focuses on October. The maps, once again from David Glantz, cover the battle of Bryansk-Vyazma in close detail (eleven maps for a four week period!) and are of high quality.

Some other reviewers write that Stahel is continuing the same themes from his previous books. This is true to some extent, but there is actually no reason to expect the same Army, under the same leadership, to be radically different in October than it was in August and September. Even given that his view of the fundamental problems of the German Army is much the same in this book as the previous ones, there is certainly enough new material in here on the actual operations in October to justify a new book.

Stahel concludes that the Germans won a tactical and operational victory but could not translate this into strategic success. The German Army won a battle, but could not win the war. He also notes that the Soviets were preparing a defense-in-depth of Moscow itself, meaning that if the Germans had reached the city in October or November, they would not have taken it easily, but would have been bogged down in protracted, draining urban combat.

He notes the German propaganda campaign in October, which announced that "Russia is beaten, and the Red Army is annihilated", only set up the German population for a huge disappointment when the Wehrmacht did not take Moscow after all, and the war continued. Finally, although the main perspective of the book is that of the strategic and operational commanders, he includes perspectives from the front line soldiers (which mainly serves to indicate that the higher headquarters were living in a fantasy world).

In conclusion, this is Stahel's best one yet, and a worthy addition to any collection of books on the Eastern Front.

Excellent research and well written
By J. Groen
This book continues from the author's previous books, Barbarossa and Kiev, with the story of the war in the east between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in 1941. The initial 40+ pages are spent as a review of these events, but I still recommend that you read these two previous books to get the primary value before reading this one.

Just like the other two books this book has excellent research and is well written. The book covers all aspects of the German's campaign to take Moscow in October, 1941 from strategic to the experiences of the individual soldiers. In fact, the examples of the experiences of the individual soldiers are the best part of the this book - from combat, to environment (the mud, the cold and the leeches) to recovery from wounds and sickness. This was the most violent and brutal combat experienced purportedly and this book provides some insight on that.

As covered in the previous two books, the author highlights that by this time the Germans really had no chance to win the war in the East. Even if they took Moscow, the Russians had moved manufacturing and the government offices hundreds of kilometers east. There was no way that the Soviet Union was going to surrender and the Nazis were naive to think so.

The author goes into a lot of detail and facts on why the Germans were not successful in this campaign and "General Mud" as commonly mentioned was not the primary reason. The logistics in support of the German front line soldiers, for example, was atrocious. There are many examples provided in the book of units running out of fuel and the attempts to bring supplies to them.

This book compares well with the book, The Drive on Moscow, 1941 and, if you are interested in this, I recommend that you read both to get a good picture of the events on the Eastern Front in 1941.

Amazon.com Review
What really happened in the Marabar caves? This is the mystery at the heart of E.M. Forster's 1924 novel, A Passage to India, the puzzle that sets in motion events highlighting an even larger question: Can an Englishman and an Indian be friends?

"It is impossible here," an Indian character tells his friend, Dr. Aziz, early in the novel. "They come out intending to be gentlemen, and are told it will not do.... Why, I remember when Turton came out first. It was in another part of the Province. You fellows will not believe me, but I have driven with Turton in his carriage--Turton! Oh yes, we were once quite intimate. He has shown me his stamp collection.

"He would expect you to steal it now. Turton! But red-nosed boy will be far worse than Turton!

"I do not think so. They all become exactly the same, not worse, not better. I give any Englishman two years, be he Turton or Burton. It is only the difference of a letter. And I give any Englishwoman six months. All are exactly alike." Written while England was still firmly in control of India, Forster's novel follows the fortunes of three English newcomers to India--Miss Adela Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Cyril Fielding--and the Indian, Dr. Aziz, with whom they cross destinies. The idea of true friendship between the races was a radical one in Forster's time, and he makes it abundantly clear that it was not one that either side welcomed. If Aziz's friend, Hamidullah, believed it impossible, the British representatives of the Raj were equally discouraging. "Why, the kindest thing one can do to a native is to let him die," said Mrs. Callendar.
"How if he went to heaven?" asked Mrs. Moore, with a gentle but crooked smile.
"He can go where he likes as long as he doesn't come near me. They give me the creeps." Despite their countrymen's disapproval, Miss Quested, Mrs. Moore, and Mr. Fielding are all eager to meet Indians, and in Dr. Aziz they find a perfect companion: educated, westernized, and open-minded. Slowly, the friendships ripen, especially between Aziz and Fielding. Having created the possibility of esteem based on trust and mutual affection, Forster then subjects it to the crucible of racial hatred: during a visit to the famed Marabar caves, Miss Quested accuses Dr. Aziz of sexually assaulting her, then later recants during the frenzied trial that follows. Under such circumstances, affection proves to be a very fragile commodity indeed.

Arguably Forster's greatest novel, A Passage to India limns a troubling portrait of colonialism at its worst, and is remarkable for the complexity of its characters. Here the personal becomes the political and in the breach between Aziz and his English "friends," Forster foreshadows the eventual end of the Raj. --Alix Wilber

Review
Novel by E.M. Forster published in 1924. Considered one of the author's finest works, the novel examines racism and colonialism as well as the need to maintain both ties to the earth and a cerebral life of the imagination. The book portrays the relationship between the British and the Indians in India and the tensions that arise when a visiting Englishwoman, Adela Quested, accuses a well-respected Indian man, Dr. Aziz, of attacking her during an outing. Aziz has many defenders, including the compassionate Cecil Fielding, the principal of the local college. During the trial Adela hesitates on the witness stand and then withdraws the charges. Aziz and Fielding go their separate ways, but two years later they have a tentative reunion. As they ride through the jungles, an outcrop of rocks forces them to separate paths, symbolizing the racial politics that caused a breach in their friendship. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

"Oh dear. East and West: so misleading"
By doc peterson
Seeking to fill some gaps in my literary education, I was referred to Forster's _A Passage to India_. It is a marvelous: beautifully written, and ahead of its time. Set in India at the zenith of British colonialism there, the fortunes of three Britons and an Indian cross. Miss Quested, a newcomer, wishes to see "the real India" in spite of her countrymen's disapproval. Taken, along with Mrs. Moore (also a new arrival) and Mr. Fielding by their Indian guide, Dr. Aziz, an incident occurs in the Marabar Caves that is never very clear; whatever happened (or did not), Miss Quested accuses Dr. Aziz of sexual assault.

The heart of the story isn't the accusation, nor its resolution. Rather, it is the subtle layers of misunderstandings, miscues and mistrust between Indian and Englishman, and even between Hindu and Muslim in India. The nuance and perspective Forster provides is simply sublime - the arrogance of the imperialist British, the anger and bitterness by Hindu and Muslim towards their occupier, and the mututal mistrust between Indian Muslims and Hindus is brilliantly illustrated. That what precisely happened in the caves is never wholly resolved allows the reader to insert themselves (and their respective prejudices and perspectives) into the story.

What particularly resonated with me (beyond the marvelous prose and variety of honest perspective through his characters) was how far ahead of his time Forster was. At the close of the book, Aziz - a western-educated physician (and therefore a "safe" Indian in the eyes of the British prior to the accusation against him) has a conversation with Fielding, his erstwhile friend, in which Aziz remarks, "Until England is in difficulties, we will keep silent, but in the next European war - aha, aha! Then is our time! ... India shall be a nation! No foreigners of any sort! Hindu and Moslem and Sikh and all shall be one! Hurrah! Hurrah for India! ... and then (half kissing Fielding) you and I shall be friends." This, written in 1924 - almost a full generation before India's independence. But it is not only Forster's prediction eerie, but his unabashed anti-imperialist voice suprised me.

This book rightfully belongs among the century's greatest works for the skill and beauty of the author's way with words as for his sentiments. Highly recommended.

Good enough to be enyojable, but short of something great
By Manuel Gwiazda
Anticipating an exciting read as this book is listed among the first 100 novels of the XX century I could not experience that. The subject is related to the social antagonism and mistrust between the native Hindus and the British residents and authoriries at the time of the British occupation of India
Despite the cover title reference, do not expect lavish descriptions of Indian landscapes or detailed delving about religion or peculiarities, just some streaks in the background to suit the subject mentioned above
It features a bit of mystery, the narrative is somewhat unruly and it is difficult to indentify in some dialogues who is speaking. Probably the acclaimed film was much better done than the book

A disappointment
By Lynn Gaaserud
I was looking for some guidance about symbolism etc. The book seemed geared to the student who wanted more concrete info about characters etc., that was helpful but not what I wanted. A little more background about the author would have been helpful but I googled that. I guess I was disappointed I had paid for this book when most of the info I wanted I googled it for free even though it was time consuming
