Difficult to find a better one volume work of "all things Christian"!

We've used this in our church as the basis for a six part class on the foundations of the Christian faith. Schwarz does a fabulous job covering an enormous amount of breadth in a one volume work. Further, it reads in an almost newspaper layout (easy to read). Only complaint is the surprisingly poor (unorthodox) illustrations or examples that Schwarz gives for the Trinity in chapter seven, on "Christian Beliefs" (he basically suggests a form of modalism). But, aside from this, I can't speak highly enough of so useful a one volume reference book to "all things Christian."

CREEPY!

Loved it. Megan Hart nailed the creep factor. Even without seeing in the beginning...just the visuals she gave? SPOT ON for thrills and chills. Maybe it's summer and remembering all those summers watching creepy movies are making me nostalgic, but I wanted to a good creepy read.

Loved it and this authors style of writing

It followed scripture as much as we are given, and kept me interested and wanting to see what was coming next! I found it to be very refreshing and thought provoking and could see the story unfolding in a way that could have actually happened. Loved it and this authors style of writing. I look forward to reading more of these wholesome, entertaining stories that combines fact with fiction in a truely believable way!

Wonderful Story

Claudia, Wife of Pontius Pilate is new biblical fiction from Diana Wallis Taylor. Claudia has led a very sheltered life banished to Reggio by her grandfather the emperor of Rome because of the sins of her mother. She is allowed to return to the palace of Rome to be groomed for marriage when Tiberius takes the thrown. She is given in marriage to newly appointed governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate. Claudia finds a rare joy in Roman marriages, she deeply loves her husband and he returns that love. Longing to support her husband in his new post as governor seeks to learn all she can about the people and their beliefs. She is not only intrigued as she learns about the Jewish religion, but feels stirrings in her soul as she learns more about a new teacher, Jesus. Being personally impacted by the miracles of Jesus, she becomes a silent follower. Claudia is torn with her new found faith and being obedient to her husband. When Jesus is brought to Pilate to be executed, Claudia is beyond devastated and it will take God's grace for her to forgive her husband.
I absolutely loved this book! Taylor did a great job depicting the time period and weaving a fictional story around the few known facts about the wife of Pilate. The love story between Pontius Pilate and Claudia is both lovely and complicated and you could feel the pressure that his post as governor put on their marriage. Claudia's journey to truth was beautiful to watch. As she turns her back on Roman gods while trying not to offend her husband or jeopardize his position and seeks every opportunity to learn of Jesus and his teaching. This book is a very powerful example of how God can change our lives for the better when we give him control. I could read it again in a heartbeat and know that historical fiction fans will not be disappointed with this book!

Straightforward (yet scholarly) reading on the real Jesus

Darrell Bock does exactly what his book's subtitle promises: "A guide to sources and methods." In the first part, Bock systematically takes a look at the life of Jesus, considering the historical evidence beyond biblical sources; provides a basic chronology to the life of Jesus; and overviews the cultural background of Jesus. The second part provides methods for studying Jesus. This section is a must for students of Christ who have never heard of the different "criticisms" (i.e. source, form, redaction, tradition, etc.). It may sound so "negative," but really these issues need to be understood if one truly hopes to understand the person of Jesus Christ. I especially liked Bock's overview of source criticism and the different possibilities of which gospel came first. It was, I thought, very clear even though the issue is quite complicated. (...)

Sullivan's Sting: A Biting Romance

Rita Sullivan, a cop hired to set up a sting on a petty thief, gets to do her job the old-fashioned way, in bed. But she winds up falling in love with the ne'er-do-well and before you know it, the lovelorn nerdy guy down at police headquarters, who also has a thing for Rita, is jealous. The aim of the cops is to nab the mastermind and his ring of thieves, but since Rita stops cooperating with her cop boss once she falls in love, it takes a little longer. Meanwhile, her criminal boyfriend's crimes get worse and you can guess he ain't gonna get married and settle down anytime soon. I enjoyed the book, although it lacked a certain animation. The author's series featuring Archy McNally are more entertaining.
However, Lawrence Sander's clever, zippy style is fun as always.

An interesting tale of swindlers in Florida

I personally think this is one of Lawrence Sanders best books. It is a cops and robbers type story involving higher class criminals and more sophisticated law enforcement, with only a minimum amount of spilled blood. The story line is really a number of sub-plots that wrap together into an overall plot involving the inter-relationships of the bad guys and a complex sting operation by Federal and local authorities. The novel is well developed and well worth reading.

Great Cons, Great Read!

I was surprised by the negative reviews of Sullivan's Sting - it was a terrific read, and I highly recommend it. The plot is basically about a group of people, including members of the police, who are all doing scams on each other in one form or another. I thought the characters were complex and entertaining. Other reviewers didn't care for the ending because Mr. Sanders doesn't take the readers to the final action between the antagonists and protagonists. However, I thought it worked because it is obvious what happens to the characters, and there is a plot point he ties up neatly. His writing reminds of Elmore Leonard and to a lesser extent Carl Hiassen. I had obviously heard of Lawrence Sanders before, but for some reason his books never interested me enough to pick up. I plan to immediately go out and purchase as many of them as I can.

Excellent book

The author's stated objectives are to examine Franklin's medical contributions, show how his knowledge was influenced by eighteenth-century medicine, and describe how his life and medical views were shaped by his own chronic conditions.

Franklin's views on the importance of exercise, eating and drinking modestly, breathing fresh air, obtaining a good night's sleep and avoiding things dangerous to the health are described. His improvements in stoves, furnaces and ventilation systems contributed to disease prevention. Franklin used Poor Richard's Almanac as a vehicle to make colonists aware of lead poisoning, and the importance of getting inoculated for small pox, after losing his son to this disease. He used electrical shock therapy to treat depression. His bifocals and the long arm made life easier for the aged and infirm

This book is more than a listing of Franklin's medical contributions. Dr. Finger recounts Franklin's role in founding the Pennsylvania Hospital and the first medical school in the colonies. The Library Company and American Philosophical Society were started by Franklin to foster the exchange of medical information to a much wider audience. Franklin favored hard evidence based on repeated observations and experiments when approaching his own chronic conditions of gout and a large bladder stone.

This very readable book exceeds its stated objectives. The author often lets Franklin speak for himself, the annotations are scholarly, and the illustrations enhance the masterfully crafted text.

Hundreds of books have been written about Franklin, but this is the first book to emphasize Franklin's contributions to medicine, a part of his life largely overlooked until now. It definitely should be read by anyone who wants to know more about Franklin, not just professional historians or people engaged in the healing arts.

Ben Franklin's Medical Legacy

Americans have long had an appreciation and familiarity with Ben Franklin as a founding father and pithy author of catchy sayings, most of which appeared in his "Poor Richard's Almanack." In this, his 300th birthday year, Dr. Stanley Finger shows that he was also an important man of medicine

Previously, Finger has written on other major figures in the history of science and medicine, including a number in his book, "Minds Behind the Brain." But this is his most exhaustive study yet, and one which, in his opinion, was long overdue. Indeed, Franklin's many biographers make little mention of his contributions to medicine, although they helped to shape the 18th-century medical landscape in major ways. To aid him in his research, Finger examined some 30,000 letters to and from Franklin, as well as other historical documents.

Benjamin Franklin comes across as consistently curious, empirical, and systematic in his observations about almost everything he encountered over the course of his 84-year long life. An element not often realized about Franklin was the degree to which he carried on correspondence and networked with other great minds of his era on a great variety of topics, including pertinent medical issues. This network and his own genius enabled him to see the benefits of early inoculation methods for smallpox, the risks of lead poisoning, the real causes of the common cold, and the importance of clean air. An accomplished swimmer and a weight lifter even into old age, he also recognized the need for exercise, and even noted the warming of the body and changes in heart rate accompanying different forms of exercise.

Franklin also helped some bright American students to be accepted into European medical schools and to get additional training in major hospitals. These individuals, including Morgan, Shippen, and Rush, would then be encouraged by Franklin to start the first medical school in America. Interestingly, he was instrumental in founding the first major hospital in the colonies, a charity institution for the physically or mentally ill, also located in Philadelphia. It is no wonder that, with his honorary degrees and memberships in the leading learned societies in Europe and America, Franklin came to be viewed as a physician when, in fact, he had only two years of formal schooling!

Ben Franklin has long been viewed as America's sage. As Finger shows, with his love of experiments and hard data, he was also one of Colonial America's leading men of medicine and a man willing to share his findings and views with a much wider audience.

Perhaps most fascinating is his personal battle to debunk the eighteenth-century medical fad of mesmerism. Great story

"How Sweet It Is", another great story by Alice Wisler. Wisler has a unique ability to create characters that whittle their way into your heart. Deena has inherited a cabin from the grandfather she barely knows, but who seems to know what Deena needs. A catch to the inheritance is that Deena must teach cooking skills to middle school kids who all seem to have their own issues they are dealing with. Deena, however, is determined to keep to herself, avoid relationships and heal her many wounds (internal and external). Wisler has created a stream of characters, some quirky, some not, who find their way into your heart. Each character comes at a time Deena needs them most - not that she always sees them that way! As she gradually finds her way, you will find yourself urging her on and cheering as she finds her place.

This second novel from Wisler, after "Rain Song" comes highly recommended. Alice Wisler keeps us all begging for more!

INSPIRING AND ENTERTAINING!

Deena Livingston is a young woman who seemingly had it all--a rewarding career as a pastry chef in an upscale restaurant, wedding plans well underway--until the night all of her dreams came crashing down around her, leaving scars on her body, and on her heart. Atlanta has become a painful reminder of a life that no longer fits. When her recently deceased grandfather's will provides the opportunity to move to an isolated community in the mountains of North Carolina, she jumps in with both feet, eager to escape life as she knows it.

Taking possession of the cabin, however, comes with one heavy-duty string attached; Deena must donate six months of afternoons at an after-school program for disadvantaged middle-schoolers at her grandfather's church, providing cooking lessons. The young woman who desires only to isolate herself and tend to her physical and emotional wounds is faced with two options; abide by the stipulation her grandfather has set forth in his will, or leave her hidey-hole and return to Atlanta and face the daily reminders of her shattered life.

Deena's world-view, and faith, are challenged and strengthened as she comes to know the people the Lord brings into her life in Bryson City, North Carolina. From her adolescent cooking group, she learns that not all scars are visible, and that it's possible to work through trust and anger issues while still keeping a heart open, and vulnerable, to others.

I chuckled, grinned, and wiped a few tears while reading "How Sweet It Is." Ms. Wisler is a talented new voice in Christian fiction. She speaks a distinct message of renewed hope and purpose through Christ's calling with skill, humor and sensitivity. I eagerly await her next release.

Alice J Wisler has done it again. In her new book, How Sweet It Is, we meet Deena Livingston. Deena is a young woman who has been through her fair share of pain. After an accident that left her scarred and a break-up that left her heartbroken, Deena decides to move from Atlanta to Bryson City, a small mountain town in North Carolina. Deena's Grandpa Ernest has left her his mountain cabin with the condition that she teach a cooking class to disadvantaged children. From the day she arrives in Bryson City, she is challenged to let go of her anger and forgive the past, not just by the children, but also by social worker Zack. As Deena continues to deal with her pain and hide her scars, she discovers an attraction to Zack and a genuine love for the children she teaches. She learns that scars are not just on the outside and that she and the children have more in common than she first thought.
Alice J Wisler is a writer with incredible talent. I adored this book, from the first page to the last. I think the thing that makes Alice's books so special is her ability to create characters that are very endearing. The characters in How Sweet It Is were written with such heart and such care. Each character is so unique and has his or her own pain in life. This book really spoke to me and it meant a lot to me to see this group of people, including Deena, come to grips with the need to heal and forgive. I can't recommend this book strongly enough. If you have not already read Alice's first book, Rain Song, do yourself a big favor and read that one too. You will be changed and your heart will be warmed. I loved this book and I am looking forward to more from this very talented author.

Western Christians may feel safe from being called to die for their faith, but Hovey (adjunct professor at the University of Redlands and Fuller Theological Seminary) explores the Gospel of Mark to find evidence that every church is meant to be a martyr-church. For Hovey, all Christians [should] refuse to relegate the threat of martyrdom to the fringes of history or remote parts of the globe. A martyr-church is one in which members acknowledge the essential opposition of the church to the world and the possibility that they, too, may die in Christian witness. Challenging but worth the effort

In the interest of full disclosure, Dr. Craig Hovey is a personal friend of mine. However, please do read what I have to say.

This is a challenging and thought-provoking book that explores in detail what it means to "take up your cross and follow Jesus." The gospel of Mark, which is used as a starting point, was written for what Dr. Hovey calls the "martyr-church:" a body of believers that sought to proclaim the gospel of Christ in the midst of a world that tried to silence and oppose it. Those who ultimately gave their lives in service of the gospel we call "martyrs." Dr. Hovey readily acknowledges that the threat of martyrdom for those of us who live in the "Christian" West is likely small, but he does not let us off the hook so easily. Instead, his book argues convincingly that "The virtues necessary to be a martyr are no different from the virtues necessary to be a faithful Christian. This means that martyrdom is not a special calling for a select few, but the commitment of every Christian and the responsibility of every church. Even though not every individual Christian will be killed, there is no way to distinguish those who will be killed from those who will not. Even though not every Christian will be remembered as a martyr, every church that locates its identity in the cross is obligated to cultivate the virtues necessary to enable all of its members to die for the cause of Christ. Every Christian is a member of a martyr-church." (pg 60)

Clearly, this book is not an easy read. Though it is a short 150 pages, its message is profound and dense with meaning. Chapter 1 is a reflection on baptism as a means of initiation into a martyr-church. Chapter 2 reflects on the call to follow a living Jesus into a wonderful and terrifying unknown, trusting the "results" to God. Chapter 3 reflects on the transfiguration as recorded in Mark 9. Dr. Hovey shows that the glory revealed in the transfiguration is much different than the glory we would expect and explores the danger of trying to encapsulate and "explain" a mystery such as the transfiguration. Chapter 4 reflects on how we, like the disciples in the garden, misunderstand that the call to follow Jesus into glory is a call to follow into suffering: even the suffering of the cross. Chapter 5 is a reflection on the crucifixion: not an attempt to explain it, but a meditation on the glory and mystery of the cross. Chapter 6 reflects on the ending of the gospel of Mark, including why Mark doesn't let us "see" the risen Christ but leaves us with a cliffhanger in 16:8. The final chapter explores martyrdom and promise, arguing against viewing martyrdom as a means to an end but instead as a gift from God.

This is the best kind of theology book: one that marries piercing intellect with radical faithfulness to challenge the reader into deeper discipleship.

A Thrilling But Sobering Read

Every sentence in this book seems carefully thought out, and firmly grounded in an obvious love for the Word of God. Mr. Hovey not only speaks of martyrdom as a passing doctrine to be acknowledged, but recognizes the baptism of suffering as one of the core elements of the Christian faith. Throughout the book you will find useful insight into the Gospel according to Mark, well laid out arguments, and a deeply challenging call to martyrdom in the face of apathetic culture: realizing that we are all called to carry the spirit and mantle of martyrdom.

Highly recommended for the layperson as well as ministers wondering how to communicate a very important doctrine.
