A Worthy Sequel
By Tamela Mccann
The Hero's Lot by Patrick W. Carr picks up where the last book leaves off: our hero, Errol, is in Erinon, facing his future as well as the Judica (the ruling ecclesiastical body), who is accusing him of consorting with spirits. Wrongly convicted, Errol is placed under a compulsion to track the fallen, evil former church leader, Sarin Valon, into the land of Merakh, and kill him. This is not a trek that can be made lightly, so accompanying Errol on his quest are two men whose presence will prove to be very helpful: Elar Indomiel and Naaman Ru. Errol's friends Martin and Luis do not join him; they instead travel back to Callowford to try to discover just who Errol really is and why he is so important to the kingdom. Meanwhile, did I happen to mention that Errol's feelings for Princess Adora are growing and that it seems those feelings are being returned?

There is a lot going on in The Hero's Lot, with the chapters moving back and forth among Errol and his traveling companions and Martin and his adventures. I must admit to a certain amount of frustration with the back and forth, but only because I would find myself involved in what Errol and Co. were doing and then bam! I'm back with Martin, and vice versa. That's a minor complaint really, though; there's plenty of storyline to go around, and everything advances the plot. We find out some key secrets along the way, and discover a few more mysteries as well. Carr's writing is such that I felt as out of breath as his characters as I followed them through fights and escapes; I particularly enjoyed the latter one third of the book when things were most dire and seemingly hopeless, even if I wanted to throttle Errol at times for getting lost inside himself. Excellent writing there.

I do have a suggestion for the next book (besides hurry up and publish it!): Please, please supply 1) a map (or two or three), 2) a list of characters with relevant relationships, and 3) a list of church/religious offices (and whom is currently occupying what would be even better!). I did spent a good deal of the first few chapters trying to refresh my memory of who is whom and what the church does/expects. My mind's eye could provide a fairly accurate map based on Carr's precise details but a visual would be extremely well-received. If I were reading this series back to back, I doubt I'd need such reminders, but throw in several other books between readings and my mind needed a refresher.

This is epic fantasy, people; those who love a good tale with lots of detail and ever-expanding mystery will definitely find lots of enjoy and love, as I have. Carr's got a true gift of engaging the reader, and I'm looking forward to seeing how all this wraps up. Highly recommended!

Superb Sequel!
By Annie Riley
The foundation set in Cast of Stones, A (The Staff and the Sword Book #1) is built upon firmly in this wonderful sequel. Characters grow, backdrops change, plots thicken, and stakes rise. As I delved into the deepening world of Errol and his colorful fellow characters, I found myself even more drawn into the swirling plotlines and unexpected twists of author-ordained fates. I particularly enjoyed seeing how Errol continued in his journey with strength, even despite certain revelation that shook him to the core.

Mr. Carr has kept hold of the feel of the story laid down in the first book, drawing it deeper and filling it out most enjoyably. I am so very pleased to say that it has exceeded my expectations and has moved this story to a place among my very favorite Christian fantasy tales. I eagerly await the conclusion of the trilogy! And so does my sister, who devoured this book just as she did the first.

an excellent saga continues

Book Review of Patrick Carr's The Hero's Lot

In this, the second installment of The Staff and the Sword series by Patrick Carr, the plot of the serie210440_1_ftcs deepens, with plenty of twists and turns involved. Errol Stone, the orphan and drunkard turned national hero and staff fighting expert, has become the target of shadowy figures in the kingdom's capital.

Because of his skill as an omne (a person who can read any person's cast of lots), Errol is valuable in the selection of the next king- except for those who want to manipulate the process. In a trumped up trial, Errol is forced to leave the kingdom in search of the traitor Sarin Valon, who played the role of the villain in the first book. This quest consumes most of the book, with each of the characters in the series growing in depth. Martin and Luis learn things about their faith that they did not previously believe possible. But the main tension remains- who will be the next king of Illustra, and will the barrier hold against the forces of evil waiting to overrun the weakened realm?

Carr's book is excellent. A page turner that kept my attention from beginning to end. The characters are delightful, and while there is lots of action and a little romance, the book is clean, which makes it that much more fun to read. I will eagerly await Carr's next installment.

I give The Hero's Lot five out of five stars.

I received a free copy of this book from Bethany Publishers in exchange for a fair and honest review.

From Booklist
The University of Illinois Press is to be commended for maintaining the in-print status of this now-classic biography of Martin Luther King Jr., which was originally published in 1970 and written by the highly esteemed and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of a two-volume biography of W. E. B. DuBois (Biography of a Race, 1869–1919, 1994; The Fight for Equality and the American Century, 1919–1963, 2001). This edition contains a new preface, but what isn’t new—nor should it be—is the at-once magisterial and intimate biographical account and assessment with which Lewis first graced the world. The book was widely applauded upon its publication and has enjoyed the sustained respect of historians and readers ever since. Public librarians need to face the fact that their shelves devoted to modern American history can’t be considered complete without it. Purchase it and focus attention on it. --Brad Hooper

Review
"Shelves devoted to modern American history can't be considered complete without it."--Booklist

"An excellent book that will do more to keep Martin Luther King and his 'dream' alive in a different era than would more fulsome tributes."--Louis R. Harlan, American Historical Review

"A well-researched, clearly written and well-balanced account."--Charles V. Hamilton, New York Times Book Review

"Initially published soon after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., David Levering Lewis's biography was an extraordinary achievement--a readable narrative full of historical insight. He judiciously illuminates King's achievements while also acknowledging his flaws and limitations. Subsequent studies have provided more detailed accounts of various aspects of King's life, but Lewis's perceptive portrait continues to reward readers seeking to understand King's historical significance." --Clayborne Carson, Director, Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute

"David Levering Lewis's classic biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. captured the voices and feeling of the times in its thoughtful and thorough early review of Dr. King’s legacy. I am deeply grateful it is being introduced to a new generation of readers and commend it to all."--Marian Wright Edelman, President, Children's Defense Fund

About the Author
David Levering Lewis is Julius Silver University Professor and professor of history at New York University. Each volume of his two-volume W. E. B. Du Bois biography won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. He is the author of eight books and editor of two more.

Linking Arms, Linking Lives: How Urban-Suburban Partnerships Can Transform Communities, by Ronald J. Sider, John Perkins, F. Albert Tizon

Among the various lines drawn between people in the church--male and female, young and old, black and white, rich and poor, Republican and Democrat--there is the line between the urban and the suburban. The stereotypes of the edgy, socially active, multicultural urban Christian and the middle-class, comfortable, upwardly mobile suburban Christian mix fact and fiction. Linking Arms, Linking Lives looks beyond stereotypes and makes a compelling case for partnership that crosses urban and suburban for effective ministry among the poor.
Drawing from a growing network of development practitioners, pastors, and theologians, this book focuses on the experiences of partnership between urban and suburban entities to provide both theological foundations and practical guidelines for those who desire to partner effectively. All who want to find viable ways to help the poor will welcome this thoughtful and hope-filled book. Includes a Foreword by Noel Castellanos.

Step across the urban-suburban divide and make a difference today In Linking Arms, Linking Lives, four respected ministry leaders offer solutions that have already transformed communities and have potential to allow many more people to fulfill the biblical call to compassion and justice. Here they make a compelling case for how partnerships that cross the urban-suburban divide can minister to the poor. "This work, with sensitivity and insight, exposes what nearly always lies beneath the surface of urban-suburban partnership attempts. The authors not only show us why we need biblical community, but how. This is a field guide like none other, a book for Christians everywhere to read and carry with them."--Michael O. Emerson, Allyn & Gladys Cline Professor of Sociology; founding director, Center on Race, Religion, and Urban Life, Rice University; author, Divided by Faith, United by Faith, and Against All Odds "A beautiful invitation to bust out of the ghettos of wealth and poverty and reimagine the world together. The harmony of voices that created this book are contemporary heroes of the faith whose experiences bring their words to life. May it move us closer to God's dream for our neighborhoods and world."--Shane Claiborne, author, activist, and recovering sinner, www.thesimpleway.org "Linking Arms, Linking Lives informs the Christian church on why and how we should speak to each other. It is a biblically based, practical approach to how we can unite urban and suburban Christians under Christ's lordship to do ministry."--Luis Cortés Jr., president, Esperanza "This book provides the biblical insights and practical wisdom any congregation can use to become living witnesses to the whole gospel of Jesus Christ."--Bryant L. a dense volume packed with information crucial to anyone working to make a difference in poverty-stricken areas
By FaithfulReader.com
One of the most enduring stereotypes about American society is the one that profiles urban and suburban communities along a strict set of demographics. The authors of LINKING ARMS, LINKING LIVES dispel long-held assumptions about those demographics and show how, by understanding the realities of the areas in which they minister, Christians in the cities and the suburbs can cooperate to bring about much-needed social change.

"The last twenty-five years or so have made a mess of the urban-suburban landscape. Where do cities end and the suburbs begin? Wealthy suburbanites are turning cities into suburbs, and poor urbanites are turning suburbs into inner cities," the authors write. But many of the poor still live in the cities and the wealthy in the suburbs --- meaning that they live in closer proximity than they have in decades. And that presents a real opportunity to see poorer neighborhoods transformed into productive communities.

Making that transformation a reality is the purpose of the book, and the key concept driving that purpose is partnership, a concept reflected in the writing partnership of the four authors.

After describing the need for transformation and the need for Christians to participate in that, the authors turn their attention to the biblical call to "radical community" --- the kingdom of God, a countercultural society characterized by a distinctively different relationship between the rich and the poor. That was the ideal for the people of God throughout biblical history, from Genesis to Revelation, and it continues today with the Great Commission.

After laying that groundwork, the authors define three of the foundational principles of community partnership --- deep reconciliation, authentic relationship and collaborative action --- and outline the dos and don'ts of such a partnership. Among the dos: do begin with existing relationships, do foster interdependence, do commit long-term. Among the don'ts: don't forget to love God, don't become a burden, don't forget to play.

The fruit of the hard work of community transformation extends beyond the benefit to the neighborhoods themselves: "Urban-suburban partnership may have its challenges, but the kingdom fruit that it can potentially bear --- theological, sociological, cultural and practical --- make the endeavor worthy of our affirmation and our uncompromising commitment," the authors write. The partnership fruits translate into the personal transformation of the partners themselves."

The book's 13 chapters provide numerous examples of partnerships that have succeeded, as well as some that didn't. The final chapter offers a step-by-step action plan for emerging urban-suburban partnerships.

All four authors have been active in community transformation on a practical level. Ronald J. Sider and F. Albert Tizon are professors at Palmer Theological Seminary and executives with Evangelicals for Social Action. John M. Perkins, director of the John M. Perkins Foundation for Reconciliation and Development, and Wayne L. Gordon, pastor of Lawndale Community Church in inner-city Chicago, are co-founders of the Christian Community Development Association.

LINKING ARMS, LINKING LIVES is a dense volume packed with information crucial to anyone working to make a difference in poverty-stricken areas in cities and suburbs. Its authors know firsthand what it means to live and work among the poor; theirs is no abstract, theoretical challenge to the church but a get-to-work and get-dirty proposal. Though some readers may have preferred a more condensed volume, the book is a must for workers in the field.

Terrific!!! A must have for mothers with young children!
By A Customer
Whether you're a stay at home mom or a mom who works outside the home, you will see yourself in this book. Right away in chapter two I practically said out loud "Hey, that's _me_ she's writing about!" Then Susan offers practical advice, encouragement, and best of all -- empathy! This book would make a great gift for someone who has kids ages 7 and under! Susan is also sensitive and doesn't make any judgments about moms who choose to stay home and moms who choose to have a career while their kids are little. How refreshing!!

WONDERFUL ENCOURAGEMENT FOR MOMS OF PRESCHOOLERS
By Heather Ivester
AND THEN I HAD KIDS is my all-time favorite parenting book, and I've read dozens. While so many authors give parents specific how-to tips and make us feel like failures if we don't follow their advice exactly, Yates shows us it's a tough but often hilarious calling to raise young children.

Because her book was first published in 1988, readers today can be assured Yates knows what she's talking about. Her five children are now grown, married, and raising their own families. Since her husband and children have also written books, the Yates' successful parenting experience is documented in the various stages of their journey.

From this authority, Yates offers expert survival tips for mothers still in the trenches raising young children. Her book opens with the sinking feeling that her house is too quiet. Where are the twins? She discovers little black footprints trailing from the fireplace, across the brand new carpet, to the utility room freezer. "Peering inside, I found two little girls black with soot joyfully looking at books!" By seeing her in this situation, we understand she's been there, done that, and she knows what moms of young kids go through every day.

The book is divided into ten sections: the first chapter offers a general overview of the challenges that face mothers, then the next eight sections look at each challenge specifically and offer tips for overcoming them. Examples include maintaining a positive image, establishing priorities that work, becoming a best friend in marriage despite the heavy demands of child-rearing, disciplining children, and shaping a Christian home. She ends the book with ideas for parents heading into the teen years, which is another age she writes about in AND THEN I HAD TEENAGERS.

If you enjoy this book, you'll also like Yates' essays, which are archived on the site for Today's Christian Woman magazine. Parents of college students will be blessed by another book written by the Yates' sons, THE INCREDIBLE FOUR-YEAR ADVENTURE: FINDING REAL FAITH, FUN, AND FRIENDSHIP AT COLLEGE.

I highly recommend Yates' book for young moms, even going so far as to say it's my "Bible of parenting." I've given away so many copies of this book to women in need of encouragement, and I've read and reread it dozens of times myself. Although many more recent books have been written on this topic, this is one of the absolute best.

OK, not life shattering
By L. Beck
I was excited to get this book, but found it slightly dissapointing. It was nice that the author is honest and admits to needing to get away from her kids and that they can drive her crazy at times. Most moms these days will not admit to that. The book did not really tell me anything I had not learned already from other parenting books. But all in all it was a good read.

Amazon.com Review
Elizabeth Bennet is the perfect Austen heroine: intelligent, generous, sensible, incapable of jealousy or any other major sin. That makes her sound like an insufferable goody-goody, but the truth is she's a completely hip character, who if provoked is not above skewering her antagonist with a piece of her exceptionally sharp -- but always polite -- 18th century wit. The point is, you spend the whole book absolutely fixated on the critical question: will Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy hook up?

From Publishers Weekly
wonderland revisited Spanish illustrator Angel Dominguez fills an unabridged edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with 75 watercolors, most of them closely packed with lush oversized flowers, strange creatures and winding vines reminiscent of Art Nouveau-often against bizarrely serene pastoral backgrounds. Exotic birds and animals, such as peacocks and zebras, wander through the picture frame. While the illustrations bring out the text's absurdity, pretty-in-pink Alice provides a counterpoint not of normalcy but of sentimentality.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-- Edens has compiled and arranged illustrations from 25 editions of Alice in Wonderland published in the early to mid-1900s. The result is a fascinating look at a variety of illustrative styles. This is far less jarring than one might expect because the original illustrator, John Tenniel, has so strongly influenced his successors that their interpretations are often similar in design. In fact, the fascination in these pictures is the differing details--Alice's dress, her hairstyle, and her expressions tell much about the time period and the artist's viewpoint. Edens has also done a fine job of integrating the pictures with the text. He varies interest by utilizing full-page plates, half plates, vignettes, and even reducing some illustrations to fit the design so the book flows fairly well and these myriad illustrations blend into a whole rather than distract the eye. The reproduction is excellent. A must for collections with historical interest in children's literature and large libraries. --Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library

A Masterpiece of Wit and Style, A Timeless Work for the Ages
By Gary F. Taylor
Jane Austen is one of the great masters of the English language, and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is her great masterpiece, a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th Century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, wealth, love, and sex in order to marry both to their own liking and to the advantage of their family. And such is particularly the case of the Bennetts, a family of daughters whose father's estate is entailed to a distant relative, for upon Mr. Bennett's death they will lose home, land, income, everything. But are the Bennett daughters up to playing a winning hand in this high-stakes matrimonial game without forfeiting their own personal integrity?

This battle of the sexes is largely seen through the eyes of second daughter Elizabeth, who possesses a razor-sharp wit and rich sense of humor--and who finds herself hindered by her own addlepated mother, her sister Jane's hopeless love for the wealthy Mr. Bingley, and her sister Lydia's penchant for scandal... not to mention the high-born, formidable, and outrageously proud Mr. Darcy, who seems determined to trump her every card. But the game of love proves more surprising than either Elizabeth or Mr. Darcy can imagine, and sometimes a seemingly weak hand proves a winning one when all cards are on the table.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is simply one of the funniest novels ever written, peopled with memorable characters brought vividly to life as they both succeed and fail at the game of life according to the manners of their era. It is a novel to which I return again and again, enjoying Austen's brillant talent. I have little respect for people who describe it as dull, slow, out of date, for as long as men and women live and fall in love it will never be out of style, always be meaningful, and always be funny. A masterpiece of wit and style; a timeless novel for the ages.

Check the Publisher carefully before you place your order because....
By Kiwi
One of the versions listed is published by "General Books LLC." Another reader complained about the tiny and almost unreadable font - you probably bought the version published by General Books LLC - and here's the reason.

General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Publishing, (google them and take a look at the Wikipedia article on them) and they specialise in publishing books that are free of copyright without doing any editing or quality control. A few quotes from the publishers website will explain more:

"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....

After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....

Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....

We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies..... "

So what you're getting if you buy the version published by General Books LLC is a scanned in, unedited, low quality (and with an almost unreadable font from the sounds of it) unindexed / No table of contents book at a higher price than many of the good quality imprints available. Basically, VDM Publishing is flooding Amazon with these low quality prints (450,000 of them are listed now) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is insufficient for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher.

Totally unethical marketing.

A reader,Scott Hannigan has commented: "What you have given us is feedback - not a review. There is an appropriate forum for your complaints. You should delete it as it brings down the average score of a classic." In response, I have to say that Amazon does not provide a forum for complaints and has been remarkably resistant to taking on board criticism from many customers over the books published by General Books LLC. In addition, Amazon is the Printer of these POD books and makes a substantial cut from them. Sadly, given that the General Books LLC version is lumped in with other imprints from genuine publishers, there is no real way of making potential buyers aware of the problems with this particular version of the book without inflicting it on all the other versions available. C'est la vie.

Scott - apologies for replying like this but Amazon removed my ability to comment some time ago - I broke ze commenting guidelines. Re "Amazon does provide a feedback section. You will find it under 'My Account', 'Personalization', 'Leave Seller Feedback'" - yes, they do indeed but the response to myself and many others has been uniformly that it's not their problem. Look up the discussion forum on Alphascript Books for a very enlightening backgrounder on this one. That said, if you bought a book from General Books LLC and saw what it was like, you'd be highly annoyed - as most buyers have been - and even if you returned it to Amazon for a refund, you'd be out of pocket for the postage.

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying
By Laurel Ann
Just when I thought I had more editions of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE than I should ever own up to, I will freely admit to just one more. After all, what Janeite could resist this tempting package? An unabridged first edition text; Annotations by an Austen scholar; Color illustrations; Over-sized coffee table format; Extensive introduction; And, supplemental material - all pulled together in a beautifully designed interior and stunning cover. *swoon* Where are my aromatic vinegars?

This new annotated edition appeals to modern readers on many levels beyond being a pretty package of a beloved classic. Austen is renowned for her witty dialogue and finely drawn characters, but not for her elaborate physical descriptions or historical context. When PRIDE AND PREJUDICE was originally published in 1813, this brevity was accessible to her contemporary readers who assumed the inferences, but after close to two hundred years words have changed their meaning, insinuations and subtle asides have become fuzzy, and cultural differences from Regency to twenty-first century are worlds apart. Anyone can read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and follow the narrative, but it is so much more enjoyable if you can read it on an expanded level understanding it in social, cultural and historical context. Editor Patricia Meyer Spacks has not only added extensive notes on plot, characters, events, history, culture and critical analysis from a vast array of Austen and literary scholars, but added her own personal insights and observations from years of reading Austen and her experience as a college professor. From shoe roses to Fordyces Sermons to military floggings to the 19th-century meaning of condescension, readers will be informed and enlightened on every aspect related to the novel, the author and her times. In a nut shell, she has vetted great resources, gathered nuggets of knowledge and placed them at our feet.

As with all of Austen's characters, this new annotated edition of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has its own charms, "frailties, foibles and follies." Weighing in at over three pounds, and encompassing 464 pages of unabridged text and fine print margin notes, this book easily reigns as the most all-inclusive and well-researched edition of Jane Austen's masterpiece that I have ever encountered. Considering that the elaborate annotation classifies it as a reference work in addition to a full text, it is quite puzzling that it lacks an index. In addition, the illustrations are expertly selected but sadly lost some of their refinement in the printing process, coming across dark and murky in places. However, I was pleased to see a list of further reading and illustration credits listed in the back of the book to encourage readers to "add something more substantial, in the improvement of [their] minds by extensive reading."

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: AN ANNOTATED EDITION is a monumental achievement that should be on the top of your holiday wish list and considered one of few editions available to be esteemed truly accomplished.

...Nate's many fans will eagerly sink their teeth into this treat. -- School Library Journal, December 1, 1999

From the Inside Flap
Nate the Great loves his mother's Monster Cookies. Her Strawberry Draculas, her Chocolate Frankensteins, and especially her Cinnamon Werewolves. But now her Monster Cookie recipes are missing! Nate, the great detective, has never solved a case for his mother before. Can he do it? With his dog, Sludge, Nate gets to work. They look, sniff, climb up, bend down, push, and pull. They find long and short clues. Crinkly, wrinkly clues. And fishy, fangy clues. But which clues count? Can Nate the Great ever hope to eat those wonderful cookies again?

Cinnamon Werewolves! Yes!
By Mel Odom
For over twenty adventures now, Nate the Great, the young detective, has searched for his friends' missing things. He's searched for missing stamps, weeds, boring beach bags, missing pets, musical notes, stolen bases, and even saved the King of Sweden (kinda!). In all of this, his mom has been quietly supportive. He leaves a note on the refrigerator to tell her what case he's working on, that he will be back, and that he loves her. But in NATE THE GREAT AND THE MONSTER MESS, Nate investigates the disappearance of something his mother has lost: a special cookie recipe. If Nate and his dog Sludge cannot find the list, Nate will never again enjoy Strawberry Draculas, Chocolate Frankensteins, and Cinnamon Werewolves (his favorite cookie!). Nate is on the search, and he's reluctantly rounding up the usual suspects.
Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is the author of over twenty Nate the Great adventures, including NATE THE GREAT STALKS STUPIDWEED, NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG, NATE THE GREAT AND THE HALLOWEEN HUNT, and NATE THE GREAT AND THE MUSHY VALENTINE. She has written dozens of books for young readers. She named Nate the Great after her father. Her books have been named as Children's Choice books and Junior Literary Guild selections, and been picked as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress.
Although most of the Nate the Great series have been written as long stories, this book is one of the series' more recent additions to be broken into chapters. The short, punchy chapters make great stopping places for reading out loud when traveling, or to dole out as rewards-or for those nights when little listeners don't want to go to bed right away and can ask for "just one more chapter." Reading Nate the Great books out loud is always a treat, especially for the reader willing to do character voices and make the most of the terse, first-person narrative. In this book, Nate encounters Annie and her dog Fang, Rosamond and her cats, and Oliver who follows everybody-including Nate the Great on this case. Again, Marjorie Sharmat makes perfect use of logic and clues, building an intriguing mystery that young minds will ferret out and understand.
The entire Nate the Great series is recommended to younger readers and parents who love reading to their children that might have tired of (or memorized!) all of the rhyming Dr. Seuss books. This series makes a great transition to leap from to Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys later.

My son love Nate the great
By C. Churchwell
This is a great book. My son is 6 and loves reading this book and feeling like a detective and he even dresses up and goes on hunts for clues like he is Nate the Great. It is also full of basic sight words, to get kids into reading chapter books. The words are easy, but the pages are longer so kids feel that they are reading harder material.

Our son completely loves the Nate series. They are fun reads and completely appeal to the 5 to 7 year old set... great starts for children who are advancing beginning readers.
