David L. Rowe (M.S., Ph.D., M.Div.) is a professor and the dean of spiritual life at Salt Lake Theological Seminary. He teaches courses in homiletics and communication, spiritual formation, cross-cultural ministry, worship theology, and biblical studies. He lives in Utah.

Good insight into how Mormon culture influences everything

There are a growing number of books dedicated to the discussion of the many facets of Mormonism. Some are great, while others tend to be the same recycled material. There is something different about this book and its approach to Mormonism. Instead of taking the hard-line, doctrinal approach, it focuses 90% of its pages on the LDS culture which is the driving force behind its teachings, how they are put into practice and the subsequent impact on members lives. In short...it is woven into EVERYTHING.

The book's premise is simple. Due to the influence of the LDS church in every part of the believer's life, opening their eyes to the truth of the Bible and how Mormonism contradicts it is better done once certain nuances of how they think and act are understood. He proposes "A new way to share Christ with Latter-day Saints" as the sub-title reads. Let's take a closer look at his proposed way of evangelizing to them.

One of the reoccurring themes Rowe talks about is the LDS Persecution Complex. This is the tendency for Mormons to see most (if not all) questions about their belief system and way of living as an attack. The origin of this deeply ingrained perspective has its roots in the very early days of the church's existence. LDS history often teaches that the early Latter-day Saints (as they will call themselves) were heavily persecuted by those living around them. It is a common belief that these persecutions were un-provoked, and some were. But a closer, more thorough look at the historical accounts show that the Mormons were not the innocent victims being portrayed today. Some examples of this are briefly outlined in chapter 3.

If someone begins to talk with members of the LDS church about their beliefs, it will not take long before you see them pull the persecution card. In many ways, it is a method of protection designed to discredit any information that comes from outside the church that is not "faith-promoting". This can be subjective and will be triggered without intent or warning. This understanding is important to his approach because once you are seen through this lens; the chance of being able to effectively reach-out to that person will be almost non-existent. I did this as a Mormon and have recently experienced it from the other side as well.

As a result of this inclination to shut-down any real conversation once an "attack" is perceived, Rowe suggests that direct questions about doctrine are better kept in our hip pocket until there is more relational trust. I would agree with that based on my own personal experience.

He tells a number of stories of people he has interacted with that ring true to me as a former Mormon. The stories dealt with the different potential reasons Mormons might be inclined to distance themselves from the LDS church. These include a deeper hunger for God, deal-breaking inconsistencies with either doctrine or history and besetting burdens.

Allow me to speak about this last reason. LDS doctrine teaches a type of "conditional grace", a grace that is extended to a person only after they complete certain tasks or demonstrate their continued devotion. When combined with a list of "must-do" rules, the byproduct of this errant teaching of God's grace is a weight that no one can or should carry. Though they may not admit it, many of your LDS friends and family are weighed down by this very thing. The story of Janet demonstrates this. After years of faithful service in the church she told her husband:

"I can`t do it anymore. I can't lift it. My load is just too heavy. I can't do all the things I'm supposed to." She goes on to list the responsibilities she feels obligated to juggle and then says, "I'm just not perfect - I'm never going to be perfect, and I just can't pretend anymore that I am. I've finally admitted to myself that I can't make it to the Celestial Kingdom, so why should I break my back trying?"

This kind of weariness is common and was actually the first reason I stepped away from Mormonism. My heart breaks for people experiencing this. The true grace Jesus offers escapes them but only because they have been presented with a false grace that in no way demonstrates the love and mercy God has for them. Unconditional grace is what every LDS person needs to see and understand.

One of my favorite quotes in the book that I think highlights his plea for Christians to cultivate real relationship with Mormons is when he says, "Let's carefully observe what particular way God seems to be at work in a person's life and think that way as we relate to him or her." It is by partnering with God in what he is already doing that we can show the LDS in our lives the grace, freedom and rest found in Jesus.

The end of the book highlights another need that I experienced as I worked my way out of Mormonism and into Christianity...a welcomed place to land. Understanding the issues most LDS face once out, he identifies areas in which the local Christian church can improve on to make the transition as easy as possible. He also includes a glossary of commonly used LDS terms to help you understand "Mormonese".

While the end of the book can come across as advocating a "soft" approach when discussing doctrine (which I tend to disagree with) I think this book is a must-read for anyone who has someone close to them in the LDS church but is struggling trying to understand and relate to them. Having spent 30 years in the LDS church I can say that they way he presents Mormons is accurate and is full of great insight into how they think and act. Combining the wisdom found in "I Love Mormons" with a basic understanding of LDS doctrine will go a long way in helping you effectively share the truth of the gospel with those who are in need of it most.

Excellent

This book is perfect for those living in, around, or near Mormons. It dispels many misbeliefs about the Mormon religion and it takes the outsider into the religion without bashing, hating, or belittling them. It explains the differences between a evangelical Christian and a Mormon instead of just laying into Mormonism as if they were the most evil of people. Having moved to Utah myself with very little previous Mormon interaction I found this book as a life saver in terms of getting a grasp on everything culture to vocabulary to history. It is a must read for any Christian or non-Christian, in other words, everyone should read it. It is a very easy read as well.

Read this book before ever challenging Mormons!

I was fully prepared to study up on the various problems with Mormon theology and lovingly lay them on a friend of mine, expecting that he'd see his mistake and hopefully change his mind. This book showed me that my idea was clearly wrong. It's not the way to approach Mormons. In fact there is no secret or special way at all. You approach them as you would anybody that you love, with respect and care, and without condescension.
This books deals with the core theological issues but not before explaining real Mormons for who they are- wonderful people with real lives and a strong commitment to their culture and country (and others who aren't so devout- like some Christians).
The book also explains what the approach I was ready to take actually results in- walls going up so thick that the clearest, most well explained and lovingly presented argument will never penetrate them.
The author has lived as an evangelical Christian in the Mormon capital of the world for many years. He knows what happens when you challenge Mormons on their faith, and explains in detail what an improper attitude does to any chance of being taken seriously by them.
Please, please read this book before talking theology with any Mormon, or suggest it to another person you know that will be.

Exactly What I Needed!

This frank and breezy account of one woman's step by baby step path back to sexy-ville is just what I needed! Since my husband and I had our daughter, our world is focused on this tiny, special person, and sleeplessness has blurred our eyes for any other type of love. I could relate when Raykeil calls her husband, "Poppy;" pre-baby I vowed never to call mine Daddy, and now do so all of the time, and not as in "Who's your Daddy?" Reading this book put our on-hold love life back in perspective, reminded me of my sense of humor and inspired me to put just as much emphasis on the naughty me as the mommy me. Give this one to all of your postpartum girlfriends!

Accurate, and therefore depressing

I've been through this from the husband's perspective. We had three kids, and despite being physically fine, my wife just checked out sexually. Although she's a decent writer, Raykeil is also, like most mommies, incredibly self-centered. Pretty much the entire world revolves around her and her daughter, and her husband is left to fend for himself, which she even finds sort of amusing. It isn't. I never felt more alone, more lost, more desparate and more in anguish than when I was suddenly reduced to an ATM and an assistant in my own home. She doesn't, in the end, seem too concerned with what kind of damage this did to her husband, how unfair it was, how hurtful or how cruel. And, like mommies everywhere, she uses her status as a potent guilt-weapon. When her husband tells her that condoms reduce some of the sensation and pleasure of sex, she instantly retaliates with that time-honored "Well, try CHILDBIRTH buster!" She found hundreds of ways to make sure her husband knew she didn't care, she didn't want to be touched, she didn't need him. The dead giveaway for me was the line that she had spent something like a thousand nights with her daughter in bed with them. You cannot find a much clearer way of telling your husband that he is your absolute last priority -- and that how that makes him feel isn't really too important. Hit a nerve.

Reel Good Book on Film for Christians

I enjoyed this book. I was glad it wasn't too academic or too technical since I am not an expert on film making or movie criticism. There was good historical information and many examples from a variety of films to help illustrate the author's point of view. I agree Christians need to become more critical consumers of film. Since 95% of people see at least one film per year, it shows that there is tremendous potential for spiritual dialog with friends and family by talking about film. I plan to think through some of the concepts in the "Theological Approaches to Film Criticism" and "Becoming a Film Critic" chapters as I continue to grow in my understanding of film making.

Evangelical theologian recognizes a wideness in God's grace

This volume by Fuller Seminary professor Robert K. Johnston is a readable introduction to film criticism from a thoroughly Christian perspective. Johnston is evangelical in outlook, and yet does not sacrifice his love for cinema to a fearful, fundamentalistic disdain for human culture. Rather, from the outset, he affirms the Christian truth that God's grace is to be found everywhere (what theologians have called 'common grace') and that cinema can be an occasion for a 'revelatory event'. Just as all life is 'sacramental' (that is, every aspect of the world has the potential to show us God), so the movies can help us to transcend to a deeper understanding of God and humanity.
Johnston rightly affirms that a film must first be approached on its own terms (as opposed to viewing it through the lens of a preconceived agenda). Once the audience has participated in the world of the film, then is the appropriate moment to begin the dialogue with theology. For this reason, Johnston's approach is to walk us through the basics of film criticism before applying that to the Christian study of film. On a few occasions, I worried that the author was taking us too far away from the book's stated intention (ie. a book about theology and film in dialogue), but Johnston always seems to be able to bring the material back round to assessing its relevance to the task of theological application.
His examples are far-ranging: theologically, his sources draw from every stream of Christian tradition; his choice of films to be analyzed is eclectic. He frequently homes in on a specific film (eg. Shane, Smoke Signals, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) or set of films (eg. the films of Peter Weir) in order to illuminate and illustrate the points he makes. Overall, Johnston exhibits a healthy attitude towards film, and is a breath of fresh air in an evangelicalism that too often regards films with suspicion and a superficiality that is likely to oversimplify issues of content and theme (such as sexuality and violence).
This book helped me to clarify my own method in approaching film. I have long been a lover of the cinema, and have sometimes found it hard to escape the incongruity of some aspects of this with voices from my fundamentalist past. Johnston is a man after my own heart, and seems able to encapsulate my feelings about film and how the movie experience is essential to the formation of my theology. In one chapter, Johnston addresses this role of cinema in theological method, and provides useful comparisons with various models of theological method (such as the Wesleyan quadrilateral).
I can also credit this book with changing some of my views. For example, I have long had a suspicion of mainstream cinema, almost amounting to a disdain at times. Johnston showed me the fallacy of associating commercialism with artlessness, however. After all, he reasons, didn't Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel on commission? In a sense, my aversion to mainstream cinema (or, perhaps more accurately, the mainstream of the mainstream) was a kind of misconceived snobbery. Johnston's appreciation of film from every corner of the film industry helped me to see my own short-sightedness in this regard.
This is a book I would recommend not just for film-lovers, but for theologians whose knowledge of film may not be particularly wide, but are willing to let the pursuit of the knowledge of God lead them into dialogue with other possible sources of inspiration, namely, the cinema. Johnston presents an accessible overview of film criticism and, in doing so, demonstrates how films can be, in a broad, but real way, means of grace for a Christian wanting to let the knowledge of Christ invade his experience of his culture.

Church, Seminary, and Cinema in conversation.

Johnston, professor of theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary, has put together a fine introduction to cinema through the lense of Christian faith. He notes that for the most part the cinema has displaced the church as the location where we come to wrestle with the deeper questions of meaning, God, and what it means to be human. After chronicling the sometimes testy relationship between the church and the movie industry, Johnston offers a typology of Christian approaches to cinema (basically a relabeled Niebuhr typology). The typology is both a strength and a weakness of the book. Like Niebuhr, it may well be that Johnston is allowing the typology to become little more than a way of stereotyping different approaches that he finds unsatisfactory. That said, I myself found the typology helpful.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the book is the quality of the reflection that Johnston brings to the various movies he addresses. The book itself models the sort of theological reflection that should be going on in churches and seminaries. There is no knee-jerk reaction to violence or language in this book. Rather, Johnston encourages the audience to watch movies on their own terms before passing judgment on their orthodoxy. This book is a welcome and accessible introduction to the growing interaction between theology and cinema in America. I strongly recommend it as a primer for Christians interested in starting a cinema studies group in a church or seminary.

About the Author
Pao K. Wang is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he has been teaching and conducting research for more than 30 years. He has won many recognitions for his contributions in atmospheric science including the Alexander von Humboldt Award, an S. C. Johnson Distinguished Fellowship and election as a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society and the Meteorological Society of Taiwan. Professor Wang has been the principal investigator of numerous research grants sponsored by NSF, EPA, NASA and DOE, covering topics in cloud physics, cloud dynamics, aerosol physics, air pollution and historical climatology. He is an associate editor of Atmospheric Research and European Journal of Physics-Plus, a member of the international advisory board of Terrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and is also currently an advisory committee member of the Research Center for Environmental Change (RCEC), Academia Sinica, Taiwan.

Comprehensive and Accessible

I use this book (among others) as course literature for a university course on aerosol and cloud physics. I really like it, firstly because it is generally well written, and secondly because I find it particularly good and up to date on the subject of ice particles. In difficulty, it is between the introductory treatment in the book by Wallace and Hobbs (which I also like very much), and the "classic" book by Pruppacher and Klett.

The book contains much more material than what can be covered in one term, so I use only selected parts. It should be also good for self-study of the subject for readers with a general background in physics or atmospheric science.

Fifteen-year-old Texas farm boy Jubal Kane is the unwilling witness to the "dastardly deed" of his parents' murder at the hands of three wandering brigands in 1866. Powerless to stop the slaughter as he watches from the hay loft, Jubal is taken in by his kindly grandparents, who sell the farm and set up a trust fund in the boy's name. Now 22, Jubal has become a steely-eyed gunman who isn't afraid to shoot down would-be robbers over a funny look. Legacy in hand, he sets out to track down his folks' killers. After looking at inmate photos (an anachronism; photos were not taken at state prisons in this early era of photography), Jubal determines their names, then begins his Texas-wide search. Along the way, he meets a catalogue of spaghetti Western characters: painted ladies (whom he spurns), barflies and red-faced deputies whose use of dialect is unpredictable and not always consistent. Bowman (Gannon; The H&R Cattle Company) devotes a large portion of the book to Jubal's gastronomical desires and housing needs, and conducts a step-by-step tutorial on how Jubal shaves, builds a fire and makes coffee. Slim-hipped and righteous in his cause, Jubal is naturally irresistible to women and instantly wins the respect of honest men. Revenge is to be his, but two of the killers are, anticlimactically, rather easy to find, and conveniently still sitting around gloating about the murder and petty theft of seven years back. The obscure identity of the "Third Man" provides the one thread of narrative tension that does not slacken until the novel's final page.

The Quest of Jubal Kane is very realistic in its approach. It isn't a mushy-gushy romantic western, not is it "I'll gun you down at sundown, you yellow bellied..."
It's mild. Fast paced. Almost like a camera following this person around.
It's an absorbing book, Mr. Bowman knows his stuff. The way he presents it is not overly dramatic nor boring/boring and boring again.

Child of the Mist is the third book I've read by Kathleen Morgan (I'm not counting the one I couldn't finish). Like the other two, this one is set in the Highlands of 16th century Scotland and focuses on the romance between a gorgeous, hunky Highlander and a beautiful Scottish lassie who is thrown together with him through the actions of her manipulative father. And like in the other two books, there is never any doubt that these two people are going to fall in love and live happily ever after; although the ending is a foregone conclusion, the book is nevertheless a fun-but-fluffy ride through their trials, tribulations and sparring on their road to true happiness.

However, Child of the Mist is the weakest of the three Kathleen Morgan books I've read so far (again, not counting the one I DNF'd). Prior to writing Christian fiction she wrote romances for the general market, and that is evident in this book (as it is in As High As The Heavens). It's probably no coincidence that both of these books were originally published as mainstream romances years ago, then cleaned up and re-published as Christian fiction years later. Although the sex scenes have been removed, so the book is technically clean and appropriate for readers of Christian fiction, the heavy petting and preoccupation of each main character with the other's physical attributes were not removed. The result is a romance based on mutual lust which neverthless remains chaste: a weird combination, and one that many readers of Christian fiction may not be comfortable with. Indeed, I wouldn't be comfortable recommending this book to any of my Christian friends.

Although the basic story idea of Child of the Mist is a good one, it is weakly developed with too much attention given to the aforementioned love scenes between the two main characters and not enough attention given to everything else that was supposed to be going on around them. Outside of the love scenes, the characters' actions and dialogue was handled with a lack of depth and deftness that often descended into downright amateurish writing -- such as when Anne declares "I am a Christian!" (a line that was obviously shoe-horned in as part of the Christianization of the original book) or when she whirls around in circles exclaiming "I love Niall! I love Niall!" The "suspense" over who was the traitor within the Campbell clan was no mystery whatsoever; the author made it obvious from the start that it was one of two people and, although I kept expecting/hoping for a surprise twist to reveal that it was someone else entirely, alas, it was one of those two people.

In spite of all my criticisms this isn't a terrible book -- I've certainly read better but I've also read worse. It is simply a steamy romance that's been cleaned up for the Christian market, and is held together by a weakly-written plotline. But if you are looking for yet another romance set in the Scottish Highlands and want something light, fast and fluffy to read, this should fit the bill.

I love historical fiction. I was looking forward to an escape book with a bit of love story. I got characters that behaved in ways that didn't quite work, cliches and very little history. I felt like I was reading a first attempt. Excessive use of the word "Highlander" does not a Scottish story make.

#1 in a trilogy of HIGHLANDS, ROMANCE, CHRISTIAN, ADVENTURE. SWORDS AND HEARTS CLASH.

Child of the Mist, is a perfect title for Kathleen Morgan's first book of this Scottish Highland Hills trilogy set in the mid 1500s. Plenty of action, adventure, Claymore fighting, and treachery to balance the beautiful highland life and romance of this epic story. Some good moral teaching comes from some of the best of the Campbell family honor. It is presented with just enough Celtic dialect to flavor, like salt on French-fries.

The Campbell clan story is told through 3 books: #1 Child of the Mist, #2 Wings of Morning, and #3 A Fire Within. If you have not read them, begin with the first and be sure to read them all. They truly remind me of a favorite Scottish series author, Diana Gabaldon (Outlander), except this series is equal in pages to only one book of Gabaldon's. Morgan also writes in a way to compel the continuation of reading. It's hard to set the book, or series, down till the end.

The clan consists of Robert (the Campbell, chief) Campbell, father of Niall and Caitlin. His brother Duncan (tanist) raises a son Iain. Sister Lydia has a son Hugh. And then there is Malcolm. Book #1 is Niall's story. Book #2 is Iain. Book #3 is about Caitlin. But the family moves on, and "the Campbell" changes, and other clans interact. There's the MacGregor's, Maclaren's, Drummond's, MacNaghten's and others. Clan chiefs rise and fall. The clan's got some secrets and mysteries as well. Romances defy death and honor. Honor and Christian morals play a part in all of the books. It's a delightful trip by anyone from any clan into Scottish life in the Highland Hills.

There is Campbell clan fighting and even the burning of the "Witch of Glenstrae". But Anne's not the only healer in the highlands. And she does not desire her clan 'obligation'. Ach, the pledging of Anne MacGregor's hand to a Campbell for a feuding truce--never can it work in her heart. Never in her bed. Never...well it's a long, long way to the end of never. Mayhap, just over the next Highland Hill. See? There stands Niall in his braw plaid. Bet ya can't read just one. Best order the trilogy from the start. I recommend it.
