About the Author
Ella Cara Deloria (1889–1971) was born on the Yankton reservation in South Dakota and grew up in a prominent family on the Standing Rock reservation during a disruptive time in her tribe’s history. She studied at Columbia University with Franz Boas and became an ethnologist. She is the author of Dakota Texts and Speaking of Indians, both available in Bison Books editions, Dakota Grammar, and many other works. Susan Gardner is an associate professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and is the author of several articles and a forthcoming biography on Ella Deloria.

Lakota Life before White Contact

The Lakota were in the woodlands until horses roamed the Plains after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Thus, in short order they adapted to a far different environment, one with groups of a thousand or more in the summer while winter encampments numbered fewer than a hundred. The large groups required specialized men's societies to serve as police, war parties, and priesthoods. The society was so well ordered that mass ceremonial gatherings such as the Sundance occurred regularly requiring complex organization.
The Lakota wintered to river bottoms where they could shelter their horses and find firewood. Shamans replaced priesthoods to focus on individual problems. The kinship system they developed to accomodate these changes provided remarkable flexability.
Deloria does an exemplary job of capturing this change in social life through the story of a mother and daughter in everyday experiences. Although life is seen through the eyes of females, Deloria captures men's activities as well as female's. We get a vivid picture of the different environments as well as a sound introduction to Lakota life before contact with the larger society, a period anthropologists call the 'ethnographic present'.
Readers may recognize the Deloria name because of Vine Deloria.Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto Ella was his aunt whose father was an Epispocal bishop. She studied at several universities. While at Columbia University she met Franz Boas who instructed her in anthropology and linguistics. With him she compiled a Dakota grammarDakota Grammar: Memoirs Of The National Academy Of Sciences V23 As the author of Waterlilly she became one of the first American Indian novelists as well as a scholar and researcher among the Dine (Navajo) and Lumbee Indians.

the real thing- beautiful and fascinating.

If you want to understand the old ways in a Native family, read this book. Far more than from any dry anthropological text, here you get the feel for daily life (fascinating), the values of the culture, and the landscape woven into a good human story. One woman navigates her culture, a difficult marriage and finds herself. The author came from the culture herself, translated for anthropologists and came to understand her culture from this respect, and knows the value of a good story as a vehicle for learning.

If you like anthropology

You will love this. It is not a novel in the traditional sense, but rather an attempt to explain and show a culture in the easily readable, enjoyable, easy to relate to format of a story/fiction. Takes you through birth through death - daily life, social customs, traditions, religion - in the Lakota culture from a woman's perspective. As a novel it is a little slow because it is VERY detailed with explaining all of these patterns. But if you are interested in other cultures, this is a VERY different one relative to contemporary American culture, and the beauty is in the detail and how she builds the world and thoroughly explains the context of the actions. Be sure to read this edition's intro on the Lakota author who was really a dedicated scholar fighting to do her work in a time when women were not respected in academia. She lived on pennies working for the men credited for founding anthropology.
