This is a 40 day devotional study that could be used individually or even in a small group. Each day is one Bible passage that draws the reader to really explore that passage instead of just reading it and moving on.

It seems that part of "praying" the scriptures is to really talk to God about what the scriptures mean, and what it means to each person. The reader can use these are their only devotional time, or they could use it as a starting point for their own journal time with God. After going through the 40 days of praying scripture, I believe the reader will have a basic idea of how to do this on their own, with a different Bible passage if they wanted to. And that I believe is one of the best things about this book. It is not just a book that you read, journal, and put down--rather it can be a book that can help someone see each Bible passage as a way to pray to God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

While most of the scripture passages are in the New Testament, there are about 1/4 that are from the Old Testament. I wish there were more Old Testament passages, but that is just a person preference.

Both experienced and novice Bible students could enjoy and benefit from this book.

Good book, a little bit thin for content

This is a very self-directed book, meaning you have to find your own motivation to fill in the blanks and lead your own prayer times. I do believe that praying the Scriptures of the Bible are powerful, and a very positive thing to do as a follower of Jesus, but I personally had a hard time finding the gusto to do it. This book is probably not for beginners, but for a more disciplined, season saint. Someone who already spends time in concentrated prayer would benefit from this book. There is a short devotional, (paragraph) in the beginning of each chapter, followed by a set of blank lines to fill in your prayer, ending with a scripture for reference. I think I needed more structure overall.

Jump Start Your Prayer Life

I wasn't familiar with Kevin Johnson but I think this little book was a great place to become familiar with him. This little 40 day book is a great intro into developing a prayer life. Each day's lesson is short enough to be completed as part of a time of study and reflection. It is self-directed but prayer is supposed to be a mostly private affair so that set up makes sense. I like that the topics vary and are all based on relatively familiar passages of Scripture. There are also multiple translations quoted throughout so you can see the varied ways man has translated God's Word. Each lesson also has reflection phrases where the reader can write their prayer response to Scripture and several reflection/discussion questions at the end. The book sets itself up nicely as a book for small group study as well.

If you are struggling to jump start your prayer life, this little book could provide that jump. I also think if you journal your answers in another notebook, the book can be used multiple times. This is definitely a book I'm keeping on my bookshelf for use in my own personal walk with the Lord.

Read This book if you want peace for your Raging Soul!

This is an outstanding book of Biblical references. Jesus comes up in the Boat with his disciples to the Gadrenes and the disciples run back to the boat and leave Jesus with the naked, bloody, crazed man who had thousands of demons living in him.the poor tormented, tortured soul cried out for Jesus to heal him.The demons screamed to be cast out into a nearby herd of swine. Jesus allowed them to do so. The swine ran and jumped off a deep cliff into the water and drowned. The once crazed man sat clean and clothed at Jesus' feet.

What does this biblical passage mean for us in the 21st Century? Read this book there are many interesting Biblical comparisons.

This is a beautiful gift book.

Emigrant spirit & hardship & heart in equal measure

Well written tale of a fatherless Welsh family and their new life in 19th century South Africa. The author points out the veracity of the historical events, with a bit of artistic license thrown into the mix. He deftly weaves the personal and historical stories and I never skipped a page.

Emigrant pioneer(s) - remarkable individuals: men and women, good and bad, one and all...

One small digital publication problem - the eldest son is Ianto and it appears as Ian to, throughout much of the book.

holds your attention

I give this book a 5 because it is a very interesting historical read without the sex in alot of novels. A good strong story about the struggles in that time period and how families survived. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys history, but not loaded with nonsense details. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

my heart, and the courage of the people was amazing. The cruelty was beyound belief and yet I knew it was real and it had happened.

Series consultant Madonna M. Murphy is a professor of education at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, where she teaches education and character education courses to teachers. She is the author of Character Education in America's Blue Ribbon Schools and History and Philosophy of Education: Voices of Educational Pioneers. Murphy has served as the character education consultant for more than 40 character education books for elementary school children, on the Character Education Partnership's Blue Ribbon Award committee recognizing K-12 schools for their character education, and on a national committee for promoting character education in teacher education institutions.

Series consultant Sharon L. Banas was a middle school teacher in Amherst, New York, for more than 30 years. She led the Sweet Home Central School District in the development of its nationally acclaimed character education program. Fabulous Debut Novel!

The Edge of Light is a seamlessly written story of faith, courage and survival. The story begins in 1838 with Molly McGarvie, who lives in St. Lawrenceville, Missouri. When her husband, Samuel, dies she must find a way to provide for herself and her family. A woman of spirit and strength, Molly believes for the impossible and sets out on a journey that takes her and readers on a quest for a new life and a miracle.

Ann's captivating writing style draws readers into the lives of Molly McGarvie, her companion Betsy who is more a friend than a slave, and Doctor Spangler who carries a burden only God can lift. There is also an interesting cast of characters you'll pray for and cheer with, and some you'll want to strangle. Ann's attention to detail and her elegant writing style will draw you into every scene. You'll experience emotions and encounters right along with her characters.

The Edge of Light is a fabulous first book! Once you read it, you'll forever be an Ann Shorey fan. I am.

Molly McGarvie is suddenly thrown into maturity beyond her years as her husband returns home with cholera. She has three children and another due soon. Betsy her childhood friend lives with them and together they fight the odds against them in the frontier.

Molly's husband Samuel has a business and Molly believes that she and her children can handle it, until...her brother-in-law legally takes it and their farm from them.

She must move back to Kentucky where she can raise her family. She is unable to take Betsy with her and is devastated, firmly resolving help bring her back with the family.

Molly deals with guilt and anger at having chosen the wrong doctor for Samuel and believes if only Doctor Spengler had been there, maybe Samuel would have lived. Not only that but he was responsible for the loss of her son and she will never forgive him.

The young mother has determined that she can raise her family alone with no help from any male and she spurns everyone, including Dr. Spengler who has tried everything to get her attention.

This was a wonderful read and I became so involved with the characters, I didn't put it down....Jim made his own dinner that night!

Ann Shorey did a great job and I recommend this book to women of all ages.

Best Novel of the Year

Molly is a woman I can relate to. Molly is pregnant with three young children and a loving husband when disaster strikes. Her husband dies unexpectedly, and she is left a widow. Molly is left without means to support her family. Since it's 1834, she's expected to rely on men to help her put her life back together. But she faces life head on and works to keep her family together. Not only that, but with every tragedy that comes her way, she clings to faith in God to combat it. This woman will not give up no matter what life throws her.

I was amazed to find out this was Ann Shorey's first novel. I want to read more of her work. This is the best novel I've read this year.

Takamaro Shigaraki is a Buddhist priest and scholar, recognized as one of the leading Shin Buddhist thinkers in the world today. His innovative approach to traditional Shin Buddhist ideas via comparative religious scholarship and rational analysis has made him a cause celebre in the Shin Buddhist world. He has served as president of Ryukoku University, one of Japan's oldest and most prestigious universities, where he received his PhD in literary studies and is a Professor Emeritus of Shin Buddhist studies. Dr. Shigaraki has also served as Chairman of the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, the largest Shin Buddhist organization in the world.

Shinjin
Chapter One
The Idea of Shin in Buddhism

We will now consider the meaning of shinjin in Shin Buddhism. Please understand that my approach to shinjin is somewhat different from the interpretations found in traditional doctrinal studies. I believe, however, that what I am about to present reflects the true, inner reality of shinjin, as it was taught to us by Shinran.

When I last visited Berkeley twenty years ago, I participated in many study sessions with Shin Buddhist ministers in America. At that time, the following discussion took place. It seems that at Buddhist temples the Japanese word “shin” was almost always translated as “faith,” as in “I put my faith in Amida Buddha.” One minister mentioned that he was troubled about this, for he did not know how to answer a question that had been put to him by a member. The question was this: “Christianity teaches people to have faith in God. At this temple, we are instructed to put our faith in Amida Buddha. So what is the difference between Christianity and Shin Buddhism? Is it just that we have different objects of faith?” The minister wondered how best to answer this question. At that time, I responded by saying that I had many problems with translating shinjin in Shin Buddhism as “faith.” I mentioned that shinjin, as explained by Shinran, is quite different from the “faith” found in most religions. I would now like to discuss that difference.

Belief and Faith
Secular Notions of Shin: Belief

Before talking about the content of shin in Buddhism, I would like to consider other kinds of shin. Generally, when the word shin is used in the realm of human relationships, it corresponds to the English word “belief” (shin’yo or shinrai in Japanese). In addition, there is a form of shin that corresponds to the notion of “faith” (shinko in Japanese) in religions generally. In this sense, shin means that one places one’s faith in an absolute God. I believe that there are differences between the secular notion of belief and this religious concept of faith.

Both secular belief and religious faith presume a relationship between a subject and an object. They are objective forms of shin, since they involve a subject that believes (or has faith) and an object which is believed (or in which one has faith). On this point, belief and faith are similar. However, there are differences between secular belief and religious faith. The first difference is that belief takes as its object something in the secular world, while faith takes as its object something transcendental and eternal. Secular belief is concerned with some object within this world, whereas religious faith is directed toward an object that transcends this world.

Another difference is that secular belief can occur only if one has a certain degree of proof. For instance, we can believe in our companion, such as a spouse or a friend, because our longstanding relationship gives us definite proof that we can trust that person. On the other hand, we are not very likely to leave a bag filled with money in the care of a person whom we have just met for the first time—because we do not know whether we can believe in that person or not, since we do not have any proof allowing us to trust that person. Here is another example. Most of us are willing to board airplanes or ships, even though accidents sometimes occur on both of them. This is because we know that even though many airplanes go aloft, they seldom crash, and ships almost never sink. Taking this knowledge as evidence, we board them in the belief that everything will (probably) be all right.

This kind of proof always involves an issue of probability. In some cases the probabilities may be extremely cruel, as when we are told that we have an illness that is likely incurable and we will be able to return to health only by the slimmest of chances. On the other hand, we might be told that we need not worry about an illness, for we will almost certainly become well again. The “proof” upon which we base our beliefs is really just a matter of probability. Still, we cling to any kind of evidence that will allow us to believe that everything will probably be okay. That means, however, that there will also be times when persons or things, which we had believed in,
betray our trust.

In order to live as human beings in this world we have to believe in a range of people and things. Yet our world can also be a world of tears when those in whom we had believed prove untrustworthy. This is the kind of life that we human beings all live.

All of this is captured in the secular meaning of shin, or belief.


General Religious Notions of Shin: Faith

In many religious forms of shin, by contrast, people place their faith in an absolute being or in the transcendent. Here, the object of their faith is something that is eternal and transcends this world. This kind of faith takes as its object something that is eternal and ultimate, whether we call it “God,” “Buddha,” or something else. Moreover, this kind of faith is independent of rational or “objective” proof. Does God exist or not? Do heaven and hell exist, or do they not? There is nothing that can confirm or deny any of these matters in an objective way. There is no way to prove or disprove them with logic or observation alone. At the same time, it is impossible to prove that they do not exist. Such matters transcend human judgment and cognition. When, in spite of that, people still acknowledge the existence or reality of such things, they are exercising this kind of religious faith.

“We must surrender our intellect in order to have faith.” “Because it makes no sense, we have to put our faith in it.” “Faith is a gamble.” Such expressions point to the structure in which this kind of generic, religious faith arises: by eliminating all intellectual functioning, people offer unquestioning endorsement to the object of their faith, and gamble upon something for which there can be no certainty.

Buddhist Notions of Shin

Shin as Prasada

The nature of shin in Buddhism is quite different from the secular form of shin (belief) and the religious form of shin (faith).

A number of Sanskrit terms serve as the basis for the word shin in Buddhism. One of them is prasada, which in the Pure Land sutras is used to denote entrusting (shin-jiru in Japanese) in Amida Buddha. This term means, among other things, “purity,” “joy,” and “clarity.” It has been translated into Chinese as shojo or chojo (purity), joshin (pure trust), shingyo (entrusting with joy), and shinjin.

I recall hearing this explanation from a teacher during my student days: Deep within the mountains there exists a pond. The water in that pond is perfectly clean and pure. The surface of the pond, moreover, is so calm and tranquil that it is just like a mirror. The state of the water in that pond, said my teacher, is what is meant by prasada.

In the Sanskrit version of the Larger Sutra of Immeasurable Life, the word prasada-citta appears in the passage on the Primal Vow to express entrusting in Amida Buddha. Citta means “heart and mind.” That is, one’s heart and mind becomes pure and one realizes joy. In Buddhism, citta also refers to fundamental human consciousness. It points to the deepest and most basic level of an individual human being’s subjectivity. Stated further, it may be said that this heart and mind is identical with the life of each and every person. Therefore, prasada-citta means that one’s mind—one’s fundamental personal subjectivity or human life—becomes pure and clear, and one realizes joy.

In the Chinese translation of the Larger Sutra, the Primal Vow teaches sentient beings to “entrust with joy” (shingyo) in Amida Buddha. Shingyo is a translation of prasada. Since prasada means that one’s heart and mind becomes pure and one realizes joy, it was translated as “entrust with joy.” A later passage in the Larger Sutra clarifies the meaning of the Primal Vow by using another phrase, “realize shinjin and joy” (shinjin kangi). This is another expression for “entrust with joy” (shingyo). Shinjin is equivalent to shin (entrust) and kangi is the same as gyo (joy). Hence, both are Chinese translations of the original term prasada. We can see that entrusting in Amida Buddha refers to a state of mind, prasada-citta, in which one’s heart and mind become pure and serene, giving rise to great joy.

Shinjin is Non-dualistic and Subjective

I think that you can see that the Buddhist notion of shin means something quite different from either belief in the secular sense or faith in the generic religious sense.

The first difference between them is that shinjin in Shinran’s teaching of Shin Buddhism does not refer to a dualistic frame of mind in which we take something as the object of our belief or faith. Prasada, or shinjin, signifies a state in which our own hearts and minds become pure, and we attain great joy. This form of shin is completely non-dualistic and subjective in nature. It does not imply that we must do something vis-à-vis some object.

Shinjin as the Experience of Awakening

The second difference between shin and the notions of secular belief and religious faith is that the realm of prasada, or shinjin, transcends this secular world. A Beautifully Written Book - Recommend For All Shin Buddhist Practioners

I bought this book for my spouse, he has been carrying it with him and reading it since he eagerly got it out of the wrapping. He and I both have a very substantial library - many Buddhist books and periodicals make up one wall - and he has said of this particular book: "So many Shin Buddhist books I have are like Masters Theses; THIS is like a PhD!".

Highly recommend for all levels of practitioners - even if you are not ready for it yet, you will be so happy to have it when you are!

This book is the real deal!

This book is highly recommended for anyone who is interested in the Nembutsu teaching of Shinran and Honen. Professor Shigaraki masterfully explains the teaching in such a way that a modern 21st century human being can understand and ACCEPT it!

He makes it clear that Jodo Shinshu is a true Buddhist path and not the "believe in Amida, go to heaven" teaching many are led to believe. Shinjin is nothing like believing in Jesus, it is a true Buddhist awakening experience.

I am extremely grateful to Professor Shigaraki for this book.

Simply The Best

Professor Shigaraki is an outstanding figure and deservedly so. Though his viewpoints are unapologetically modern he connects these viewpoints with the early writings of the founder of Shin Buddhism, Shinran. While Shigaraki skills as a scholar and a researcher are beyond critique, he also writes with the humility of a fellow traveler and the beauty of a poet. Given how many writers still make factual errors in regards to Pure Land Buddhism, I would consider this one of the must haves for anyone interested not just in Shin Buddhism but Buddhism as a whole.

About the Author
Laurie Olin is Principal of Olin Partnership and Practice Professor of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his extensive work on landscape projects, including Bryant Park in New York City and the Getty Center Gardens in Los Angeles, Olin has written frequently on the history and theory of landscape architecture for various professional journals, for which he won the Bradford Williams Medal in 1991. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and is an Honorary Member of the American Institute of Architects. He is a coauthor of La Foce: A Garden and Landscape in Tuscany and Vizcaya: An American Villa and Its Makers, also published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.

Ordinary Places, Extraordinary Insight

After reading this book, I went out and bought a sketch book. Now, I'm daydreaming about spending the summer in the English countryside, or perhaps in Italy somewhere. Olin inspires the reader to draw. More importantly, he explains how drawing can help us understand places and the forces that shape landscapes. One learns a greater appreciation of ordinary places and the people who create them.

Insightful observations for Perceiving the English landscape

Laurie Olin immerses the novice and intellectual landscape observer in the experience of the British countryside. He reveals perceptions through drawings and writings, engaging the reader in historic as well as contemporary investigations. As an architect as well as a renowned landscape architect, Olin adds his unique slant in a beautifully told story. I particularly thought the pensive recanting of the English landscape experience important enough to require it as reading for my college design class who will travel to England next year.

About the Author

Dr. Alden Cass, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and performance coach for competitiveexecutives, athletes, and musicians. He is President and Chief Consultant of Catalyst Strategies Group, a team of psychologists specializing in coaching financial services executives and individuals performing under stressful job conditions. Dr. Cass conducted the nation's first clinical investigation in twenty-five years on the mental health of stockbrokers. He also writes a Web column for Trader Monthly magazine and TheStreet.com, and is a bimonthly columnist for On Wall Street magazine.

Dr. Brian F. Shaw, PhD, is a professor of psychiatry and public health science, a clinical psychologist,and one of the originators of applied cognitive-behavioral therapy. He is the coauthor of Addiction and Recovery For Dummies (Wiley) and Cognitive Therapy of Depression, and the principal of BFS Consulting, a sports and entertainment consulting firm based in Toronto, Canada.

A Real Picture of Wall Street

In my 14 years as a financial advisor on Wall Street, I've seen almost everything there is to see. Nothing shocks me anymore and I have become weathered by the ups and downs of the markets. I'm good at what I do for others financially, but I'm terrible about helping myself. I work with a guy who actually goes to see Dr. Cass and he recommended this book to me. As jaded and cynical as I have become, I initially thought that psychologists could never understand my daily job description or my stresses. Boy was I wrong! It was scary to read about some of the case studies because it felt like the writers were talking about me and my life! So much so that I actually sat down with my wife to show her the section on the Iceman so she could better understand me. There wasn't a lot of psychobabble and the Bullish Thinking strategies that are offered seemed doable at work and at home. It's rare for me to be impressed with a book, but this one seems to offer me value. Lessons about how to live my life better and how to make more money at the same time. Kind of like a Nirvana! Great read, quick and easy. No BS and these psychologists don't seem fake like so many we hear about.

Not Just For Wall Street Types

This book is a thoughtful and helpful guide for anyone plagued by negative thoughts and a stressful work environment. It teaches effective techniques for dealing with others, as well as ones' self, to have a more succuessful and happy life. Highly recommended.

Lawyers Have it Rough Too!

I am not a broker or trader. In fact I don't work on Wall Street at all. Regardless, my job is extremely stressful and my work hours, extremely long. I am a corporate litigator and was emailed a blurb about this book from one of my buddies on Wall Street. I was having a tough time managing my anger at work when unpredictable things happened during one of my hearings or throughout the course of a case. I would fly off the handle at my colleagues and my wife. The Channeled Rage section of this book helped me gain control over the powerful emotion of anger. Now I no longer feel lethal with my anger. The Bullish Thinking section is also good for helping me focus on the crazy thoughts that often precede my anger and frustration. I guess there is hope for me after all. My message is that Law is just as stressful as Wall Street and anyone working in this job should read this. If you have ever seen the inside of a court room you would see that there are many angry lawyers out there!
