Soon after Joseph Smith, Jr., founded the Mormon Church in 1830, newspaper editors called him “the American Mahomet,” “Modern Mahomet,” or “Yankee Mahomet.” In The American Muhammad Alvin Schmidt has undertaken the challenging but informative task of documenting, discussing, and analyzing over seventy parallels that exist between Smith and Muhammad. He cites valid arguments why parallels between noteworthy individuals in history need to be studied in order to understand why they engaged in similar acts that left major marks in history. This fascinating book provides many facts not commonly known about Joseph Smith and Muhammad and will help readers see and understand how the teachings of these two men contradict biblical Christianity.

No one is in a better position to identify the parallels between Islam and Mormonism and their radical difference as compared with creedal Christianity.

At a time when Christianity is under assault worldwide, thispainstakingly researched and superbly written account of seventy parallels between the founders of two thriving socio-political faiths, Islam and Mormonism, should be compulsory reading for all.

Riveting and very compelling
By Peter
Schmidt is a great historian and has probably done the best research which compiled the most extensive research ever done pointing the similarities between Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism and Muhammad the founder of Islam. It truly links to the same source of evil and shows the history behind these two cults. It is much recommended for anyone who is not buying into Mormonism and Islam being two peace loving religions. Historical Mormonism will shed much light into modern day claims and Alvin Schmidt did a fantastic job in exposing common falsehoods. For someone who wants to specialize in apologetics, this is perhaps the manual. Its in simple English and the references he obtained are overwhelming and authoritative.

Excellent study of a most important subject
By Kathleen K. Melonakos
Fundamental beliefs determine a person's destiny, and as Jesus said, "A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher."(Luke 6:40). This book is a major contribution to understanding the similarities and differences between Christianity, Mormonism, and Islam. All three of these worldviews derive directly from their founders. Therefore, it is instructive to study the founder's lives and teachings. Make no mistake-- the founders of Mormonism and Islam lived similar lives and had similar goals, while the life of Jesus was radically different than any other person in history. Mormons have been led to believe Joseph Smith was next to Jesus in virtue, and somehow divinely inspired. Yet he lived a life that no man of God, much less a Biblical prophet would have lived.
As Prof. Schmidt documents, Joseph Smith studied Muhammed early in his career. In Missouri he formed the oath-bound Danites; a group consisting of hundreds of men that secretly swore to obey him as if he were a god, "right or wrong," as the Danite oath states. He proclaimed as the head of these Danites, that "...we will trample down our enemies and make it one gore of blood from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was the 'Alcoran or the Sword.' So shall it eventually be with us--'Joseph Smith or the Sword!'" Smith raised an even bigger army in Nauvoo, that is, in excess of 4,000 men, and with his secret Council of Fifty planned to take over the whole United States, or even the world. Joseph's revelations supplanted the Bible just as did Mohammed's Koran. Mohammed practiced polygamy, as do modern Muslims--while Smith married 44 wives. There are many more parallels between Smith's life and Muhammad's--Dr. Schmidt has identified at least seventy seven.
What is excellent about this book is the author's command of both religion and history; thus his ability to use an economy of words. It is a well written and well-organized book that stays sharply focused on the lives of these founders and the consequences of their teachings. Jesus never, ever taught his followers to convert by the sword, but instead to make disciples by loving one's enemies. Jesus would never have taught it was holy to secretly marry 42 women behind his wife's back, and then lie about it publicly. Jesus' teachings were always consistent with the rest of the Old Testament, and he came "not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it." Contrast that to Mohammed and Joseph Smith, who did not live the moral laws they enforced upon their followers.

Good exposition of two influential men
By Lutheran pastor
This book provides some interesting exposition of what Mohammed and Smith really taught and did. this ia a far different view than you will receive from the media. If you think this is propaganda read the Koran, especially remembering the Muslim doctrine of abrogation - something that contradicts an earlier statement means the second is correct.
