From Publishers Weekly
James, critically acclaimed author of the series the Bowers Files, sends new chills down the spine in his newest suspense thriller, told from various points of view and centering on FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers's criminology and geospatial tracking of serial killers. When a prominent congressman's daughter is murdered, seemingly unconnected crimes become evidence of a heinous game played by two people who have the same things coursing through their veins as their victims and the cops trying to catch them: love and hate. James packs the narrative with ethical dilemmas and subplots involving abortion and medical research ("It would have saved us all a lot of trouble if your mother had just gone ahead with the abortion"). The novel moves swiftly, with punchy dialogue but gruesome scenes. Readers must be ready to stomach the darkest side of humanity and get into the minds of serial killers to enjoy this master storyteller at the peak of his game.

From Booklist
In the fourth Patrick Bowers thriller—after The Pawn (2007), The Rook (2008), and The Knight (2009)—the FBI criminologist is called to the scene of a gruesome murder. At a primate research facility, a woman was attacked by two chimpanzees, but this was no accident: someone had tied the victim, a congressman’s daughter, to a tree and set the animals on her. Patrick, who’s faced his share of twisted killers, might be encountering his most clever foe. This is a fine thriller, featuring a strong, compassionate protagonist and a couple of pretty scary villains (imagine if Bonnie and Clyde were serial killers, and if they were completely mad). James, an accomplished writer who seems equally at home writing hard-edged thrillers and books about spirituality for adults and younger readers, clearly knows how to spin a yarn; and—despite its thematic similarities to the television series Criminal Minds—this novel is fresh and exciting. --David Pitt

From the Author
While I was writing the Bishop, I was able to tour the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. So all of the information about the inside of the academy is as accurate as I was able to be without giving any inside information away.
When I began the book, I wanted to have the entire story take place over the course of 52 hours. However, as I worked on it, I realized that this wouldn't allow me to build up the suspense I wanted to throughout the story.
While writing the climax, I abandoned a rudimentary outline that I had started and wrote it organically, solidifying in my mind the realization that outlining was not for me and would end up wasting my time.
I didn't know who the bishop would be until I was completing the final chapters of the book.

Another Winner
By Jake
When a Congressman's daughter is found brutally murdered in Washington D.C., FBI Agent Patrick Bowers is called in to help make sense of the madness. Bowers has a knack for catching high profile killers thanks to his controversial use of geospatial investigative techniques. However, this time around Bowers continually runs into dead ends despite his best efforts. Catching one killer is hard enough, but now all the evidence hints at two.

In Patrick's personal life things are no less complicated. Tessa's birth father is back on the scene, Bowers is caught in a dizzying love triangle, and a psychopath from his past pays an unwanted visit. Despite all the obstacles in his path, Patrick Bowers must find a way to do what he does best: catch killers.

Steven James continues his impressive run with his fourth Bowers Files novel. Series of this nature often run the risk of becoming repetitive and overdone. After awhile familiar characters become stale and the plot twists become less surprising and more manufactured. Steven James shows no signs of falling into these traps, and it only seems his writing is better with each offering.

As always, this novel's strengths lie in the characters. The first person narrative of Patrick Bowers is nothing short of exceptional, as is James' depiction of the father/daughter relationship between Patrick and his step-daughter, Tessa. Indeed, Tessa has become a fan favorite of the series with her quick wit and intelligence coupled with a vulnerability that surfaces at just the right moments. This beautifully flawed relationship has been the glue that holds these stories together and that's certainly the case once again.

The Bishop takes place primarily in the Northeast and its fun to see Patrick working in different locations in each novel. No matter where he finds himself the reader feels like they are there, only proving the level of research that goes into each story. If that wasn't proof enough, readers will be captivated by the intricacies of geospatial investigative techniques and the procedural elements of FBI investigations. Everything about the story feels real and the reader can't help but be drawn in.

Steven James continues to impress me with his ability create genuine twists and revelations. While there is nothing mind blowing about the plot execution here, I was still caught off guard by the killer's identities in the end. James is a master of presenting so many possible angles that it makes it almost impossible to accurately foresee the outcome.

The Bowers Files is in full swing and I am thoroughly enjoying this journey. Up next is The Queen, and I have no doubt it will be well worth the wait.

The Black and White Squares
By Eric Wilson
Steven James first made me mad with his debut novel. He used elements of chess, coffee, serial killers, and family to craft a heart-pounding story, and in doing so bested my own efforts to use similar elements in fiction. Yes, that really got under my skin. But surely it was a fluke. His second and third books in the Patrick Bowers series only improved upon his first, and with this, his fourth, he writes probably his best yet. Oh, how he annoys me!

Patrick Bowers has just ended and, in some ways, lost his confrontation with a previous foe. That foe now walks the streets a free man again. He shows up at inopportune times, rankling our faithful FBI agent, then disappearing again. What are his intentions? Is he involved in a new string of brutal and methodical murders? As the story unfolds, we find Patrick struggling not only with the evil in the hearts of humanity, but struggling with what makes us human at all. Do we have free will? Are we programmed by DNA to act always in a certain way, or can we choose to change, to grow, to make moral decisions? Such questions might seem pedantic in less skilled hands, but they are central to the book's plot and to the solving of the mystery.

Patrick's difficulties are increased by his growing relationship with his seventeen-year-old stepdaughter, and by the reappearance of her biological father who wants custody of her after all these years. Why now? What is the man hiding? And, as always, Patrick can't help but turn to his daughter for advice when it comes to his romantic entanglements--limited in these books, but always fun and/or touching.

The humorous moments are balanced by some deeply introspective moments about the very nature of the human soul, and these two aspects give meaning and nuance to the horrific crime scenes plotted by the killers and discovered by Patrick and his fellow agents. The story races toward a final confrontation, weaving together a number of plot threads, revealing the last clues, and giving us two seconds to breathe before opening the door upon yet another mystery--to be explored in next summer's "The Queen."

Why, though, is this one called "The Bishop"? I'll leave that for you to discover. It has to do with the black and white squares, with the paths each one of us take in playing out this game called Life.

Totally Suspenseful! Completely gripping!
By Katie Garvin
Oh. My. Word.

This book was A-MA-ZING. Seriously--it was amazing!!!!!

I can't believe I call myself a thriller/suspense fanatic...but have taken this long to read one of Steven James' books! (I plan to remedy that problem, I can assure you!) If you are a fan of Christian thrillers that will keep you on your toes the ENTIRE time and are clean (but still realistic and true-to-life) then...

Get. This. Book. NOW!!!!

Before I continue to rave about how awesome this book is, I do give a warning. A big one. The Bishop is NOT a book for readers who do not like violence, torture, and scenes of how the serial killers murder their victims (which, in this book, were always very violent deaths). I personally would not recommend this book to teens. It's a very adult book. A mature read all the way through. In addition to the gore/violence, the words `Oh my G**', `P**sed', and `C**p' are each used once.

Patrick Bowers is really a very complex character that I enjoyed getting to know better through the course of The Bishop. I loved how, while he is very passionate about his job, he's more passionate about something else--his daughter. Often, when the case was weighing down on him, I loved how he'd stop all else to ensure that Tessa was okay. Their relationship, the strong love they had for each other, was beautiful.

From start to finish, Steven James spins a thriller that will leave you white-knuckled and thoroughly spooked by the time you read the last chapter. The Bishop was better than a movie! Any day! The scenes that creeped me out the most were the ones from the serial killers point-of-view. But at the same time, I was thrilled that Steven included this in his book. A look into the killer's twisted mindset, and from their perspective, really shows us how deprave we are as human beings. Just goes to show you how much we need the Lord.

The Bishop is the third book in the Patrick Bower series and while the book did well as a stand-alone...I am certainly itching to get my hands on the previous books. The Bishop was just awesome. Amazing. Totally suspenseful. Completely gripping. It's going on my favorites bookshelf--permanently!

I received this book from Revell. It was not required that I give a positive review, but solely to express my own thoughts and opinions of this book, which I have done.
