Send in the Clowns (A Paul Chang Mystery Book 3), by J. Gregory Smith

TV news anchor Laura Stark thought she was finally free of Max, her bizarre ex-husband. But a series of sinister pranks convinces her that Max—a trained circus clown—is stalking her again.

Since she broke a controversial news story that made her a persona non grata with the New York City Police Department, Laura turns to a pair of quirky Delaware private detectives for help. Paul Chang, a former NYPD cop with a mean streak, and his prescient, scrawny sidekick, Nelson Rogers, are convinced that Max is up to no good. But they can’t be sure exactly what the prankster wants from Laura. Meanwhile, Laura scores scoop after scoop from an anonymous tipster, breaking big stories about a billionaire’s murder and an unlikely peace treaty brokered by the mayor of New York. Chang suspects Max has some connection to the exposés—and a grandiose plan that goes far beyond simple stalking. Can Chang and Nelson catch Max before the mad jester turns the city into his own three-ring circus?

The third novel in the Detective Chang mystery series, Send in the Clowns juggles a twisted tale of obsession and political intrigue.

Previous background in this series very helpful
By D. Williams
SEND IN THE CLOWNS is another entry in J. Gregory Smith's Paul Chang series. In this novel, Laura Stark, a TV anchor in New York City calls private investigator Paul Chang and his partner Nelson Rogers to help her. The problem? Her ex-husband, Max Stark, a professional clown, is harassing her, and she wants no part of Max in her life. NYPD won't help because of a story Laura broke years ago that led to the suicide of an admired officer.

Plot twists abound here, and the PIs - and readers - learn of Max's involvement in many other things than harassing Laura - things that could lead to war!

I found this novel very suspenseful and wanted to keep going to find out what would happen next and what plot threads would twist now. However, as someone who read another of Smith's works, LEGACY OF THE DRAGON, I must say that readers of SEND IN THE CLOWNS will find it very helpful to have had this background. This does not work that well as a stand-alone book. For that reason, I am giving this novel a four-star rating, but I still highly recommend it for those who know this series.

No Clowning Around, This Book Is Worth Reading!
By William Bentrim
A Noble Cause was an improvement over Greg's first book Final Price as was Legacy of the Dragon over the previous novels. I enjoyed all of them but this book was even better. J. Gregory Smith is going to be a smashing success!

Burly Paul Chang and his quirky sidekick Nelson are back. This story is one of international terrorism, stalking and political intrigue.

Chang is still recovering from injuries from the previous story. He is a complex character who is constantly battling his internal dragon. Nelson's character of the consummate nerd is equally likeable. You find yourself seeing these two in people you know. Greg does a great job with his characterizations.

I found the story more colorful and delightfully complex with a cynical view of politicians and their overwhelming personal conceit. Max as a villain was just about perfect. The circus connection provided abundant color and sly humor.

A good story, lots of action, likeable characters, what's not to like? Oh, and lest I forget, a terrific cover! My only criticism of the book is lack of a sufficient back story. I have read all of the books and thus had no issues but a reader new to the series may stumble a bit.

J. Greg Smith is on track to be the next Lee Child. Perhaps we could get Jack Reacher to meet Paul Chang, there would be some serious action in that meeting. Greg, how about Unleash The Dragon?

I highly recommend this book!

I've never been afraid of clowns . . . before this book
By Texaswomyn
This book began slowly and annoyingly. At one point I put it down and started to pick up another book, then though I'd give it a few more minutes. And I'm glad I did, because I ended up liking it quite a bit.

The book is one in a series about private detectives Paul Chang and Nelson Davis. Both are former NYPD and Delaware police officers, so they have extensive experience in law enforcement and friends across the respective agencies. Both detectives were interesting, and I will have to read previous books (which I will) to see how they ended up in their current situations. There was more character development of Paul Chang than Nelson Davis, and hopefully a future book will give more insight into Nelson's personality and character. As the book progressed though, more and more was revealed about each, making them feel like whole people.

I wasn't as fond of their client, Laura Stark, a TV newswoman, and her current boyfriend Drew. They were well developed characters for the most part, they just didn't appeal to me. The secondary characters are also well developed and evolve and change as the story develops

The antagonist is the clown of the title, Laura Stark's ex-husband who grew up in a circus environment and is proficient at disguises and all manner of subterfuge. Without giving away the plot (probably well discussed by other reviewers) Max Stark is often a step ahead of the police and the detectives, making him seem unstoppable.

It's an exciting story with an exciting denouement. Once the story got rolling, it because more and more difficult to lay the book down (it was 4:02am when I finished it. Thank goodness I didn't have to go to work today). I wholeheartedly recommend this book by Gregory Smith, and I look forward to reading his past and future stories about Mr. Chang and Mr. Davis.
