Internet censorship is a controversial topic - while the media periodically sounds alarms at the dangers of online life, the uncontrollable nature of the internet makes any kind of pervasive regulatory control impossible.
This book compares the Australian solution, a set of laws which have been criticized as being both draconian and ineffectual, to major regulatory systems in the UK and US and understanding what drives them. The 'impossibility' of internet regulation opens deeper issues - what do we mean by regulation and how do we judge the certainty and effectiveness of law? These questions lead to an exploration of the theories of legal geography which provide tools to understand and evaluate regulatory practices.
The book will be a valuable guide for academics, students and policy makers working in media and censorship law, those from a civil liberties interest and people interested in internet theory generally.

Review
'...a fresh approach to understanding the processes of moral regulation in secular, pluralist, states. This is no mean feat. Focussing on the censorship of internet-delivered "porn", Beattie identifies metasomic processes whereby regulatory regimes persist over time despite radically changing justifications. This work offers unique insights. A richly thoughtful study, it is grounded in careful attention to state practice and interpreted through the lenses of contemporary social theory, spatiality, regulatory fortressing, and critical human geography.' W. Wesley Pue, University of British Columbia, Canada

Amazon Review for Beattie's piece:
Dr. Scott Beattie's "Community, Space, and Online Censorship. Regulating Pornotopia.," serves as a close analysis of the Australian Internet regulation regime, particularly the controversial Broadcasting Services Amendment Act of 1999. However, the issue of digital pornography is a vexing one and the book therefore draws a far broader audience than simply Australians. This book is not for the entire English speaking world though. Its vocabulary is very dense and intellectually demanding. Even the most interested of readers will find the book a heavy task. Dr. Beattie is highly versed in censorship laws and media regulation as well as cultural studies. His knowledge in these areas easily gives his work credibility and makes him a genuine expert on the material. He is able to not only give readers a well-constructed and thoughtful analysis of Australian media censorship but also a deep comparison of Australia's laws to those of its cultural influences: the United States and England. Beattie also pays detailed attention to various genres of pornography while running through the history of various social movements attempting to regulate it. This brief but thorough timeline gives readers a solid background from which to draw reference from while reading about current movements. This book, while unfortunately very expensive, is a must have for academic institutions simply because of its wide coverage and relevance in the area of Online Censorship.
