Your Midwest Garden: An Owner's Manual, by Jan Riggenbach

It’s a rare midwesterner who doesn’t grow something, whether potted plants on a porch, caged tomato vines, a blooming border, or a solitary rose. And it’s an even rarer midwestern gardener who isn’t sometimes flummoxed by extremes of weather, pesky insects and persistent diseases, or simple questions about what to plant where. For nearly four decades, Jan Riggenbach has given these gardeners answers, as well as a weekly dose of gentle humor and wise counsel, in her widely syndicated newspaper column, Midwest Gardening. Your Midwest Garden draws on these columns to offer readers in America’s heartland all the gardening information they want and need, along with plenty they might not even suspect they’re missing.

Annuals and perennials, shrubs and vines, fruits and vegetables, wildflowers, bulbs, and herbs: As readable as it is useful, this book reviews the familiar, reconsiders old favorites, and introduces dozens of surprising and seldom-grown plants ideal for Midwest gardens and landscapes. Illustrated with color photos from the author’s garden, it provides tips on plant placement and care, starting seeds and making compost, matching specimens and sites, combating insects and diseases, simplifying garden chores, designing for winter beauty, and myriad other ways of enriching and enjoying your Midwest garden.

Everything in one place

Jan Riggenbach's new book "Your Midwest Garden: An Owner's Manual" is wonderful. I have read her syndicated newspaper column for years and have kept many articles that I found useful and interesting. Now, I will have more shelf space because the folder that was full of those articles can be replaced with her book. Jan writes of her personal experience gardening in Western Iowa which is close to my home in Omaha. She has tried the plants she writes about and she has experienced the challenges that I have - deer, rabbits, not enough water and hail etc. The chapters on perennials, annuals and woody plants are excellent. But the chapters about vegetable gardens and fruit growing are even better, especially for the first time gardener. If they follow Jan's advice they will have bounty for the table. This book is well written with a few color plates of plants - but photos are easily available online for those plants that are not pictured. Most helpful is the appendix with highlights of what needs to be done in the garden month by month, clearly for those of us are unable to remember what we had for breakfast.

This is a quality publication that old and new gardeners will find useful. It is filled with good information for making things grow in our challenging climate of the Midwest.

A must for the Midwest Gardener
By Greenread
Jan's writing style is so easy to follow with just the right amount of information for the gardener who really wants a question answered. She knows from experience what works from her extensive work in her own gardens. Her beautiful property in Iowa was open to many tours by garden clubs and many other groups. The new garden she is creating in Omaha will have a new set of issues, which Jan will surely cover in her syndicated newspaper column. This book is a collection of those articles from over the years. Good, sensible, solid advice with a preference for natural gardening.

Comprehensive and resourceful.

Wow I'm a relatively experienced gardener but Jan has invaluable tricks and expertise on flowers fruits and vegetables. The information she dispenses is applicable and useful especially for Midwesterners. My gardens and yard will be better off next year after applying her tips and tricks. The writing is friendly but reminiscent of a fellow gardener taking you through her yard, the info is scientific and comprehensive. I'm impressed and like most gardeners optimistic that next year will be the best ever.
