About the Author
Monsignor Peter J. Vaghi is pastor of the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, Maryland, and a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington. He received seminary and theological training at the Pontifical North American College and Gregorian University, both in Rome. Also a graduate of University of Virginia Law School, Vaghi practiced law for many years and remains a member of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar. Vaghi serves as chaplain of the John Carroll Society, a group of professional men and women in service of the Archbishop of Washington. He is the author of the Pillars of Faith series, which currently includes The Faith We Profess and The Sacraments We Celebrate, and The Commandments We Keep. He has written a number of articles for America, Priest, and Our Sunday Visitor. He has also a contributed to two collections of writings on priestly spirituality: Behold Your Mother and Born of the Eucharist.

Wonderful Exploration of the Sacraments

In the introduction to "The Sacraments We Celebrate: A Catholic Guide to the Seven Mysteries of Faith," Archbishop Timothy Dolan writes that Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi "has baptized hundreds of babies, heard thousands of confessions, celebrated Mass daily, married countless couples, and anointed thousands of infirm and elderly. In other words, he's been on the front lines of the battle for souls, armed with water, bread, wine, oil stock, purple stole, words, and gesture." The sacraments are "the front lines of the battle for souls," yet we Catholics often take them for granted. Msgr. Vaghi's book is designed both to educate readers about the mysteries of the sacraments and their role in our spiritual lives, as well as to encourage Catholics to make greater use of them.
The book is the second of a four part series examining the four pillars of the "Catechism of the Catholic Church." As such, Msgr. Vaghi quotes heavily from the recently published "United States Catholic Catechism for Adults." This is designed as a companion volume to that Catechism, but it functions equally well as a stand-alone study.
"In the sacraments, each of us encounters God." Msgr. Vaghi explores in great detail how we encounter God in Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. Each chapter includes questions for personal or group reflection as well as a prayer. There is so much to learn about the mystery and gift that is the seven sacraments. Msgr. Vaghi has done the Catholic Church a wonderful service in writing this book.

Not technical enough

I was trying to use this book as a supplement to a sacraments course, but it wasn't technical enough. Was a little wishy washy and tended to gloss over the details of each sacrament. This is a good book if you was to get people to use the sacraments more, but not great for learning what they truly are. I decided to go with the Paul Haffner "The Sacramental Mystery" instead.

Teenager approved -- Great for Confirmation and RCIA classes

Teenager approved !!
This is a wonderful stand-alone text for those desiring a greater understanding of these key milestones of the faith.
I had Amazon deliver a few copies directly to friends and, most memorably, to my teenage godson who had just completed Confirmation. Upon receiving the at-home delivery, my godson immediately sent me a thank you note on FaceBook. He declared that by just flipping through the pages during his first sitting, he had already discovered answers to his own nagging questions on his personal path of faith.
The text is delivered in a conversational manner which makes for an easy read by anyone 16 to 60.
