About the Author
Glen Schneider graduated from Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a naturalist/gardener, he has specialized in ecosystem restoration through the planting of local native plants. As a Zen teacher he is the founder of the Buckeye Sangha in Berkeley, California and in 2011 was ordained as a Dharma teacher by Thich Nhat Hanh. Glen was a contributing editor to Thich Nhat Hanh’s Reconciliation: Healing the Inner Child, and is currently writing Touching the Earth: A Field Guide to East Bay Natural History. He lives in Berkeley, CA.

Good Daily Practice

If you want a brief synopsis of Ten Breaths to Happiness, you will find one at the end of the book, following the acknowledgments, some printing and catalog information, etc. This is a brief book with a practical suggestion for busy Buddhists, especially those who think they have no time to meditate. That suggestion: At least once each day, pause in front of something beautiful and/or captivating that grabs your attention. Look at it, and enjoy it for at least 10 breaths. Anyone can do that at least once daily. According to the author, the payoff is developing new neural pathways which push you in the direction of happiness rather than in the direction of stress, depression, or whatever brings you down. In the appendices and elsewhere, Schneider gives step-by-step instructions for taking advantages of the 10-Breath Practice. The book is well worth reading, and it can be read in a short amount of time.
