What Does the Lord Require?: A Guide for Preaching and Teaching Biblical Ethics, by Walter C. Kaiser Jr.

How applicable is the Bible's moral standard to the complex issues we face today--like stem cell research, euthanasia, gambling, and environmental care? How does a person use Scripture to make ethical decisions? And how do we teach people to think biblically about ethics?

Experienced Bible teacher Walter Kaiser answers these questions by demonstrating how, connecting eighteen key teaching Scriptures to eighteen tough ethical issues. Some examples include connecting poverty and orphans with Isaiah 58:1-12, genetic engineering with Genesis 1:26-39 and 2:15-25, and cohabitation and adultery with 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8. The result is a stimulating resource and guide for preaching and a solid foundation for developing Bible studies. Each chapter also includes concluding points, bibliography, and discussion questions.

From the Back Cover
"Walt Kaiser is the right person to write this book. The work reveals a lifetime of experience in the Scriptures, in the classroom, and in churches. Kaiser's strategy of working primarily with one or two focal texts in relation to each ethical issue addressed is a unique and valuable aspect of the book. His close adherence to the biblical text offers a fine model for expository preaching and teaching. This work will serve well as a textbook for college- and seminary-level ethics courses and as a trustworthy guide for pastors, lay leaders, and all ministry professionals who desire to apply faithfully the texts of Scripture to many of today's crucial ethical issues. I highly recommend this superb volume and expect it will have a long and useful life."--Robert V. Rakestraw, Bethel Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota

"In today's churches, many ethical pronouncements are made without firm biblical grounding, and many biblical sermons are preached without concrete application to the issues of the day. This book will help preachers and teachers speak to the ethical challenges facing the church from an informed perspective rooted in sound biblical theology and solid scholarship. I heartily recommend it."--John Jefferson Davis, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

"Many people feel overwhelmed by the number and complexity of the moral questions we face. And with people knowing less of God's Word, the need for accurate biblical guidance for navigating today's ethical dilemmas has never been greater. Thankfully, Walter Kaiser fills the void by clearly pointing us back to our biblical roots for moral guidance and by unpacking the meaning and implications of central teaching passages from the Bible. Kaiser has done it again!"--David K. Clark, Bethel Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota

"This series of studies will prove an invaluable tool to any Christian leader and will leave every thinking believer, even if not in agreement with all Dr. Kaiser's conclusions on every issue, sharing the Jubilee Centre's desire to explore further the continued relevance of biblical principles to the social, economic, and political questions facing modern society."--John Hayward, Jubilee Centre, Cambridge, England

I liked the approach
By Richard C. Klueg
We used this book for a small weekly men's study group, and found it an interesting and helpful resource. For each of 18 different ethical questions, the author gives introductory material and then directs the reader to a specific scripture passages to guide one's thinking on that question. The introductory remarks pique interest by defining the issue and giving a brief exposure to different ways it has been handled. The biblical section, then, gives an outline of the passage and brief commentary with respect to the ethical issue. Conclusions and discussion questions end most chapters.

Chapters cover such issues as Racism, Gambling, Cohabitation, Homosexuality, Civil Disobedience, and Animal Rights.

The men in the study group agreed with me that some of the chapters did not measure up the the level of others. The chapter on animal rights, for instance, made some good points but suffered from what seemed a poor choice of "key scripture" - the description of the millennial kingdom in Isaiah 11:6-9. Even if one were inclined to agree with the author's interpretation of this eschatological passage, the connection to factory farms seems a bit distant.

All in all, however, we appreciated the stimulus provided by this book, and the biblically informed thinking encouraged by the author.

Decent book on Christian ethics, but there are better books available.
By Daniel King
In this guide for preaching and teaching Biblical ethics, Walter C. Kaiser Jr. examines what the Bibles says about eighteen contemporary ethical issues including: taking care of the poor, racism, gambling, pornography, adultery, fornication, divorce, abortion, stem cell research, homosexuality, capital punishment, suicide, euthanasia, genetic engineering, artificial reproduction, alcoholism, civil disobedience, war, wealth, animal rights, and the environment. Keiser believes that a biblical ethic should begin with Scripture. He believes that the Bible’s moral standard is still applicable today, that Biblical truth is a valid measure of right and wrong, and that the character of God is a basis for “affirming that there is an ethical absolute in the universe” (p. 11). In this content summary, each ethical issue will be discussed in a separate paragraph.
The first issue discussed is the poor, the oppressed, and orphans. Isaiah 58, which talks about the kind of fast that God likes, informs this ethical issue. From the beginning, one of the marks of a Christian is his or her care for the widows, the orphans, and the poor. The believer is to love others. Jesus had compassion and the believer should also have compassion on those who need it the most.
Second, Keiser takes a look at racism and human rights. Racism is a huge problem in the United States. Differences in skin color and culture tend to separate people instead of bringing them together. In Genesis 9:18-27, the descendants of Canaan were cursed. In history, this story has provided justification for racism against people from Africa, but this is a wrong interpretation. God’s real attitude toward people of different races is found in James 2:1 “Don’t show favoritism” and the “royal law” in Leviticus 19:18, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.”
Third, is the issue of gambling and greed. People can get addicted to risking their money on games of chance. Even though many people claim that gamboling is fun, it has the potential to cause extensive societal problems. According to Matthew 6:19-34, it is important to trust God for one’s living. God, not Lady Luck, is the proper focus of one’s hopes.
The fourth issue is media, entertainment, and pornography. On the Internet there awaits an infinite amount of titillation for free. But, what is done in the privacy of one’s own bedroom can hurt society. When people watch violence and sexual activity online, it tends to manifest in their lives in the real world. Philippians 4:4-9 instructs the believer to stay focused on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and of good report.
Next is the problem of adultery which is warned against in Proverbs 5:15-23. The wise writer of Proverbs warns against seeking temporary satisfaction in the arms of someone who is not one’s spouse. Sexual satisfaction is best in the marriage bed.
The next issue is cohabitation and fornication which is talked about in 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8. Our society has lied and said that living together is like an [un]dressed rehearsal for marriage. In reality, it prepares people for divorce, not marriage.
Next up is the issue of divorce which God hates according to Malachi 2:10-16. Marriage is meant to be a lifetime commitment. When people get divorced, their lives are torn apart and their children suffer permanent harm.
The issues of abortion and stem cell research are particularly important today. For a woman who has an unwanted pregnancy, abortion seems like an easy solution and if it can help cure someone’s disease through stem cell research, women might even console themselves by saying the abortion is beneficial. But, in reality, abortion is murder. Psalm 139:13-14 tells believers that God actively shapes the child in the womb.
With the recent ruling about gay marriage by the Supreme Court, the chapter on homosexuality is pertinent. Romans 1:24-27 condemns homosexuality in the strongest terms. Paul calls it “exchanging natural relations for unnatural ones.”
Crime and capital punishment is covered in Kaiser’s book. In Genesis 9:5-6 tells the believer that God demands an accounting from those who do wrong. Punishment for crime belongs in the hands of the State. Since all life is precious, a case against capital punishment can be made.
Suicide, infanticide, and euthanasia is addressed in Job 14:1-6 which says that God alone sets the number of our days. To take one’s life in one’s own hands exalts oneself above God and His purposes for one’s life. It is best to wait until God’s time for death instead of committing suicide.
Another important issue is genetic engineering and artificial reproduction. Genesis 1:27 says that man is made in God’s image. To tinker with God’s handiwork is the height of arrogance and pride in a scientific society that doubts the existence of God Himself.
Alcoholism and drug addictions are plaguing our society. Proverbs 23:29-35 warns that alcohol can bite like a viper. Although drinking alcohol is not expressly forbidden in the Bible, drunken behavior is condemned.
What does the Bible say about civil disobedience? Acts 4:19 advises the believer to obey God rather than man. In some cases, civil disobedience may be the best way to get the attention of the governing authorities.
War is the absence of peace. St. Augustine articulated a rationalization for a just war. If a country does go to war, Romans 13:1-7 tells the believer to submit to the governing authorities.
Wealth, possessions, and economics are all important issues in our affluent society. The Bible does not specifically say whether capitalism or socialism is a better system of organizing wealth, but the Bible does caution against the love of money. Deuteronomy 8:1-20 informs the believer that everything comes from God and the believer is cautioned not to forget the Lord.
Animal rights and factory farms may be an issue for some, but I like to eat meat too much to let it bother me. Isaiah 11:6-9 does say that in heaven both carnivorous and domestic animals will lay down together.
The final issue addressed in the book is care for the environment. In Genesis 1:28, mankind is given dominion over the earth but this is not an excuse for abusing the earth. Psalm 8:1-9 gives humans control over the whole earth. This is a responsibility for humans to be stewards of what they have been given.
Walter C. Kaiser Jr. is president emeritus at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Before coming to Gordon-Conwell, he was a professor of the Old Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and at Wheaton College. He has written more than forty books including Preaching and Teaching from the Old Testament and The Uses of the Old Testament in the New.
The book is written to those who would preach and teach from the Bible concerning contemporary issues. In modern times, the Bible is distrusted by much of society, but for the Christian the Bible remains the foundation of ethical behavior. This book is an excellent resource for pastors who want to thoughtfully address the most important issues of the day. Kaiser’s application of Scripture to contemporary problems is exactly the approach that the church needs to take towards a society that thinks the church is irrelevant.
Overall, this book is good. Some chapters are better written then other chapters. For example, the chapter on animal rights is a little light on Scripture. The truth is that Scripture says very little about this issue. There are other books on Christian ethics that are better then this book such as Moral Choices: An Introduction to Ethics by Scott Rae that covers the issues with more in-depth material and insight. Another good book on the subject is Choosing the Good: Christian Ethics in a Complex World by Dennis P. Hollinger.
Kaiser’s background in Old Testament theology is evident since most of his ethical conclusions are based on what the Old Testament says. Sometimes, Old Testament law needs to be tempered with New Testament grace. For example, God hates divorce and fornication outside of marriage, but there is also grace for those who fall into sexual sin and repent. Jesus would say to those who have been caught in sin, “I do not condemn you. Go and sin no more.”
