From acclaimed writer Douglas Corleone comes this heart-pounding tale of international intrigue about a man whose mission is to find a young girl who is as GOOD AS GONE...
Former U.S. Marshal Simon Fisk now works as a private contractor, tracking down and recovering children who were kidnapped by their own estranged parents. He only has one rule: He won't touch stranger abduction cases. He's still haunted by the disappearance of his own daughter years ago when she was just a child, still unsolved, and stranger kidnappings hit too close to home.
Until, that is, six-year-old Lindsay Sorkin disappears from her parents' hotel room in Paris, and the French police deliver Simon an ultimatum: He can spend years in a French jail for his actions during a long-ago case, or he can work with them now to find Lindsay. With renewed vigor, Simon sets out in pursuit of the missing child and the truth behind her disappearance. But Lindsay's captors did not leave an easy trail--and following it will lead Simon across the continent, through the ritziest nightclubs and the seediest back alleys, and into the darkest, most terrifying place of all: His own past.

*Starred Review* Here’s one reason why this thriller by the author of the Kevin Corvelli legal mysteries works so well: it’s fast paced and lean, topping out at barely 300 pages. Here’s another reason: Simon Fisk, the former U.S. marshal who makes his living finding children who have been abducted by their estranged parents, is an excellent character. He has a tortured past, of course—that’s de rigueur for thriller heroes—but his is especially tortured: years ago, his own daughter was taken by an unknown individual, and his wife committed suicide shortly after. Fisk vowed he would never take a case involving “stranger abduction,” but this case is too compelling for him to ignore: the young daughter of an American couple, on vacation in Paris, has been kidnapped, apparently not for ransom. And here’s another reason why you can’t put the book down: once the story kicks into high gear, which is pretty much at the top of page 2, it doesn’t let up, period. The story moves as fast as Fisk’s BMW motorcycle, which takes him from Berlin to Warsaw, as he tracks the men who took the missing girl. It’s a violent story, like the Liam Neeson movie Taken (which shares some DNA with this book), but the violence is essential to the story. This is a remarkable change of pace from the lighter, more leisurely Corvelli mysteries, and—we can only hope—merely the first of many Simon Fisk novels. --David Pitt

By K. Branfield
A parents' worst nightmare hits too close to home and pits ex U.S. Marshall Simon Fisk against some very formidable foes in this intense and fast-paced thriller by Douglas Corleone. Good As Gone is a riveting novel that will take Simon through multiple countries as he relentlessly searches for a kidnapped young girl.
Simon knows all too well the anguish that Vincent and Lori Sorkin are experiencing after their six year old daughter Lindsay vanishes from their hotel room. Simon's daughter Hailey was abducted and ten years later, she is still missing. Now working as a freelancer who specializes in retrieving kidnapped children for their custodial parents, Simon is unwillingly drawn into the Sorkin case. His investigation will take him from Paris to Germany, Poland, the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia as he races against time to rescue Lindsay before it is too late.
Simon is an engaging and multi-layered protagonist. His pain and grief over his daughter's loss and his wife's subsequent suicide are palpable and while it adds dimension to his character it never overpowers the story. Simon has a strong moral compass about right and wrong that keeps gratuitous violence and deaths to a minimum during the course of the investigation. Since he is a little out his depth, Simon remains a step behind the kidnappers but his quick thinking keeps the investigation rapidly and continuously moving forward.
A novel that touches on police and political corruption, child pornography, exploitation of women and the lingering effects of the Chernobyl disaster, Good As Gone is an action-packed and suspense laden mystery. Simon's search for Lindsay is thoroughly engrossing and while some of his luck is a little too good to believe, it is easy for the reader to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the unfolding drama. It is virtually impossible to discern the reason for Lindsay's kidnapping and Douglas Corleone brings the story to a stunning and completely unexpected conclusion.
Definitely a recommended read for anyone who likes a pulse-pounding adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Meet Simon Fisk ~ The Next Hero To Fall In Love With

6-year-old Lindsay Sorkin disappears in the middle of the night from a Paris resort-style hotel room. The National Police doesn't want a media circus which will endanger Lindsay's life as well as the country's reputation; therefore Simon Fisk's expertise is quietly sought.
Simon is a former fugitive hunter who now works privately retrieving children abducted by non-custodial parents. He is a very kind and sensitive man with nothing to lose. Carrying a heavy burden of loss, Simon agrees to take on the assignment to retrieve Lindsay so that there will be two less parents in the world walking aimlessly through their own hell on earth.
Simon's clarity of mind and thought processes is astounding. He is focused, disciplined, systematic, thorough and meticulous. Like an eagle with the sharpest eyes he spots tiny details that other trained investigators have missed, while his brilliant logics connect dots with amazing precision. And all the while he hurts. He knows what the parents are going through and he feels for them. Genuinely worries about Lindsay's welfare, Simon puts her priority in the foremost of his mind when making abhorrent decisions, such as, having to end his opponent's life in self defence, even though, personally, in getting himself killed he has nothing to lose.
Good As Gone is masterpiece crime thriller that will keep readers on edge as Simon races against time to save an innocent life, from Paris to various international cities and alleys, dealing with dangerous lowlifes from smelly street thugs to the vilest professional criminals, and of course, corrupt law enforcers and treacheries.
Don't mistake this as just another Madeleine-McCann-inspired story: Good As Gone is a highly original fast-paced ingenious suspense, and you will never mistake Douglas Corleone's writing style with anyone else's because Doug's work is supremely above today's other crime writers'. He is a lot like Simon Fisk:
Doug's clarity of mind and thought processes is astounding, delivering the exceptionally complex plot in clear voice and easy-to-follow methodical narration, which is a high achievement considering the fast pace of the intricate twists and turns.
Doug is focused, disciplined, systematic, meticulously thorough and logically brilliant, leaving no chance for readers to become confused in a convoluted maze, taking them along with Fisk through dangers, action, and heart-wrenching pain.
Doug has perfect knowledge of the content, either from his professional research or experiences as a former defense lawyer.
Like an eagle with the sharpest eyes Doug spots tiny details to the tee, and this applies in both his superbly comprehensive story and flawless English, such as, though I received a review copy marked "uncorrected", I could only spot a few tiny errors.
And unlike the majority of today's men-fic, Doug isn't afraid of honesty. He shows us how men too feel, and feel deeply, even those who often have to act with ruthless brutality. He is witty and he is polite in his speech, with very rare use of strong language. (Who did say, never underestimate the seductive power of a decent vocabulary?) In Fisk, you can see Doug clearly: he is caring, and he respects women.
Don't miss reading this book, even though I'm sure a movie deal isn't too far away. Simon Fisk and the story are that good you'll be glad this is going to be a series.

A solid suspense/thriller novel
By Leslie N. Patino
"Good as Gone" is a solid suspense/thriller novel. Douglas Corleone covers the bases with a complex plot, good pacing, an engaging but human-with-failings protagonist and a possible love story.
Simon Fisk is a private investigator who specializes in hunting down children abducted by estranged parents. The fact that his own daughter was abducted by a stranger 10 years earlier and the crime was never solved has seriously messed with his objectivity, something crucial in his line of work. Factor in that his wife was so distraught that she committed suicide and the guy has plenty of memories and unresolved issues to haunt him. As the novel opens, he must decide between helping find an abducted six-year-old girl or facing criminal charges for something he has done.
Corleone understands how to blend the ingredients for a successful novel and he stirs them well. Fisk is constantly hashing out his stakes, motivations, alternatives and personal backstory. He really has no options other than to look for Lindsey or to maim or kill the bad guys who get in his way as he relentlessly pursues the goal. At points, the writing seemed to become a little formulaic: throw up a new obstacle, have protag overcome it, create a new and higher obstacle, have protag squeak by and overcome it. That being said, I didn't figure out who the ultimate bad guy was or what his motive was until they were revealed near the very end. I liked that Corleone wove in serious issues like international prostitution and child abduction, but I could have done without the frequent reminders of motivations and summary updates.
