"Despite my mother’s efforts to tame me, I resisted, holding onto my creature nature until the day she informed me I would no longer be running naked in the yard or showering with my dad. It took a few scoldings before I was transformed from colt to show-pony: a proper reflection of whichever laundered, starched, pressed, brushed, straightened, zippered, tied, and buttoned garment was placed upon me."
—From the foreword of Summer Brenner's new collection of short stories, My Life in Clothes
These stories explore the charm, tyranny, and preoccupation of clothes, on and off, bought, made, or found, fashion or function, projection or expression, body and soul turned inside out.

Review
“Summer Brenner's wonderful vignettes magically led me back to my own memories, an entire era framed in vividness and colored by the clothes I too wore: a ruffle on a vintage blouse, a cuff on a cowboy shirt, a red dress I designed for an actress, green cowboy boots with pink roses, a hat here, a bracelet there. These stories transported me. I urge other readers to join me on the same luxurious journey.”
—Jacqueline West, fashion and costume designer, two-time Oscar nominee (Quills and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
“Whether you want to slip into something silky and svelte, vintage or funky, Summer Brenner has it all in her closet. These stories fit!”
—Laura Chester, author of Rancho Weirdo
“What a fashion designer sculpts in three dimensional clothing, Summer does with words, making alluring textural descriptions of several generations of an American family. We take a seat on a journey and view our collective culture through the clothes that tie these stories together.”

tailored for delight
By Michael M. Harris
The 26 stories in Summer Brenner's "My Life in Clothes" add up to only 111 pages. Brenner is a poet, and even in prose she has a poet's ability to compress complex experience into fewer words than we might think possible. The items of apparel she reminisces about range from shoes to hats, but each of these stories in itself, and this semi-autobiographical collection as a whole, is like a skimpy, gauzy, sexy hippie dress, bought in a thrift shop, no doubt, and hand-appliqued at home with whatever colorful scraps she could find, but an unexpectedly perfect fit for the subject matter.
In rough outline, the narrator, Sue, lives Brenner's life. The granddaughter of a Lithuanian Jew who emigrated to Atlanta, the daughter of a stolid businessman and his flamboyant, neurotic wife, she's enough of an outsider to see the evils of the segregated South even as she enjoys many of its social rituals. She moves to California's Bay Area in time for the flowering of the counterculture and stays on after the 1960s turn into nostalgic legend. She tours disease-ridden, revolutionary Central America, marries and divorces, raises children, and patches together what seems to be an enviably bohemian existence out of office jobs and writing -- a life rich in art and incident, if sometimes hard-pressed for money.
Brenner knows, and knows we know, that it wasn't that easy in reality. Like the hippie dress, each story had to be pinched and tucked to a nicety before it could drape itself with such airy grace. The pain and confusion couldn't be left out -- that would be dishonest -- but it had to be worked all the way through before it could become material for art. Consider the second story, "Accessories to Crime." Sue's mother, Marguerite, takes her on a tour of Europe, steals ornate faucets from the bathroom of a Swiss chalet and then, when caught, blames the theft on Sue, who is only 12. It's excruciating to read and also funny, in equal measure.
Sue, who comes into her own prettiness late, is able to see that her gorgeous cousin, Peggy, has as much trouble with too many admirers as other girls have with too few. "By the end of high school, after she had been squeezed, groped, rubbed, pounded and humped, she eloped (out of sheer exhaustion) with the next young man who asked. It was her third proposal of the summer." When one of Sue's Berkeley boyfriends flies into a jealous rage and she realizes that "he was a lunatic and I was in grave danger," what we remember from the story isn't her fear -- though it must have been acute -- but rather the magic of her months with a self-styled Tantric teacher and musician who proclaims that he is "born to give women pleasure" and does a very good job of it for a while. They sleep in a hollowed-out redwood tree and enjoy "the most spectacular private viewing of lights, bridges and expanses of water and sky.... We camped at hot springs, north and south. We hiked in the hills. We feasted on dates and cheese. He played his flute, and I danced barefoot. It was a simple, pleasure-filled time."

Rare Delight
By Gael Alcock
I thought I was doing something with music, but it pales pales pales to insignificance beside what this writer does with words. The way she writes makes me adore punctuation, paragraphs, repetition, shapes. I think , English -- what a language! The story-- what a fantastic form! A beginning, a middle, an end, how fabulous. The way she begins, and delves here and there, and dips and meanders, but so elegantly and gracefully. We're in a seashell boat, bound for an island not too distant, the water's dappled green.
