Interesting book though a few times it was confusing, The author would switch to another person and unless you're alert you'll get confused a minute and lost then go back and realize on the very next line it switched to a different character and her life. I think she'd have done well to separate it by a blank space or did what some authors do by putting the name of person you're focusing on as name of the chapter or something of that sort. It seemed disjointed. I like Beverly Lewis' books. This is part 3 of a big book, you have to pay $10 each for the kindle edition of the other two in the set to get a complete story. This one really picks up near the end then we are left hanging. Still, I enjoyed the story. Now will go to the library and check out the other two books. I can't justify paying $20 more for KINDLE editions after I feel I just read part of a book to start with.

Another great one by Lewis

This book is the first of three in the "Annie's People" series, followed by The Englisher (Annie's People Series #2) and The Brethren (Annie's People Series #3). Beverly Lewis continues writing in the Amish world, this time the story of artist Annie Zook.
I had no idea that art/painting/sketching was not accepted in (certain) Amish circles. Therefore, Lewis' story about Annie's struggles with the world of art was a unique one. I also enjoyed reading about her "Englisher"/"fancy" friend Louisa who came to escape the hustle and bustle of the materialistic world she lived in. There were also smaller stories sprinkled in between Annie's and Louisa's. Esther's struggles with an abusive husband, as well as the disappearance of a small boy long ago, float through this book.
Overall I would recommend this to any who enjoy reading fiction about the Amish world. If I had one criticism, it would be that this book stands alone rather well- there isn't necessarily need for a sequel. I don't feel the same need to immediately purchase the next in this series, as I have for second books in other Amish series. Even then, that's not much of a criticism- to say that a book can stand alone rather well!
Other Amish fiction I enjoyed: The Parting (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Book 1) also by Beverly Lewis; Hidden (Sisters of the Heart, Book 1) and Wanted (Sisters of the Heart, Book 2) by Shelley Shepard Gray.

I love love love Beverly Lewis. I've read ALL of her books and am always on the lookout for a new one. Her books are positively transporting. Her descriptions of the Amish family landscape are so thorough, I read them to help me relax. I feel like I've spent an evening in the country! Can almost hear the cows lowing in the distance...
