Almost every spread features a beautifully illustrated example of yet another animal, bird, or insect—from skunks to owls to scorpions—that relies on the gopher tortoise’s burrow for shelter, nesting, and protection from predators. Dunphy’s clear text adds additional interesting details (“The loose soil created by the tortoise’s digging is perfect for growing plants”). One shortfall is the fact that the text is sometimes difficult to read, as it is printed in white directly on top of the illustrations. "This book would be doing a great service, even if it were not stunningly illustrated by Michael Rothman. But because every lavish two-spread takes you either close to, or deep inside, the ecologically essential Gopher Tortoise burrow and the many animals that make use of it, this book is all the more special. The Gopher Tortoise, native to the Southeastern United States, is known as a Keystone Species because over 360 other species depend on its burrows for nesting, protection, and sustenance. It is now listed as Federally Threatened in Louisiana, Mississippi, and western Alabama. I was surprised to learn what a wide variety of birds, insects and mammals is supported by the burrowing habits of the Gopher Tortoise. Creatures as diverse as the gopher cricket, mole skink, Northern Bobwhite, Red-Tailed Hawk, the Gopher Frog and even the bobcat would be adversely affected if the Gopher Tortoise became extinct. A short essay at the end of the book summarizes the plight of the Gopher Tortoise alongside sketches of the animals that interact with the Gopher Tortoise's burrows. About the Author
Dunphy is an education program developer.
Michael Rothman, the illustrator of the Just for a Day series, joined two New York Botanical Gardens research expeditions to French Guiana in 1989 and 1993. There, in one of the least logged rain forests in the world, he climbed high into the canopy and developed ideas for many of the images of rain forest life reproduced in this book. Mr. Rothman's illustrations for science publications and for such children's books as Inside the Amazing Amazon, by Don Lessem, display his commitment to these fragile ecosystems.
Mr. Rothman lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Fascinating read - a great teaching resource

My five-and-a-half year old daughter and I were fascinated at the wonderful world of the gopher tortoise, which is covered in this educational book by Madeleine Dunphy. The gopher tortoise's habitat is in the longleaf pine and scrub oak forests of the Southeastern United States. What makes this particular type of tortoise unique is that its' burrows provide shelter/hunting grounds/nesting spots for more than 360 different kinds of animals!
Until we read this book, I had no idea what a keystone species was, but this book defined the term clearly for us, i.e. that a keystone species is one upon which other animals depend on for survival. We learned that skunks use the burrows dug by the gopher tortoise for shelter and hunting; the Florida mouse uses the burrows for nesting and storing food; burrowing owls use them for incubating and sheltering their eggs; and many other species of animals use the burrows for various purposes.
I can see this book being used in the elementary classroom for teaching science. The vivid, full color illustrations nicely complement the fact-based text. The text is well-written, reading more like a narrative than tedious, factual prose, and the language used is appropriate for young readers, i.e. K-upper elementary. Judging by my own young child's reaction to the book, I feel many young readers will be captivated by the vivid and detailed illustrations by Michael Rothman. This is a wonderful, educational resource for school and home libraries.

Perfect for kids!

Perfect for kids doing research projects. It had all the pertinent information. The pictures were beautiful. So beautiful in fact, we decided to leave the book intact and use photo images from the internet rather than cutting out the pictures for my grandson's poster project. Makes one appreciate and want to preserve nature's diversity..
