Senegalese culture was enriched by the influence of women who made short-term contractural marriages

This is a well written, researched book which tells the story of women in Senegal who made contractural marriages with the Portuguese, English and French as they came down the coast of Africa for exploration, military and business ventures. Hilary Jones has spent several years in French and African archives and interviewed many people to enrich her study resulting in an outstanding political, social and cultural history of the Metis in Senegal. This sophisticated group has long been a strong influence on all of Africa as they have combined influences from Europe and Africa for an exciting story.
