Incredible Book. A MUST-MUST-MUST-Read!

A fantastic read. It pains me to see the terrible conditions that black people had to withstand back then. The title should be enough of an indication that this is a very, very disturbing read; every story of injustice made me cringe, shake my head in shame, and sigh and just be thankful that things are not that bad anymore. Basically, for the blacks who were "lucky" not to die at the hands of brutal mobs, the majority of them saw the hangman's rope in a matter of months anyway because the juries were unfair, and violent lynch mobs ensured that even in questionable cases, a death sentence would be passed and ultimately carried out. Fortunately, the book includes a few stories of people who escaped the hand of Jim Crow law in one way or another, be it by receiving a life sentence, having a death sentence commuted to life, or in VERY rare cases, eventually being released. Not all of the stories had bad endings, but they are ALL indicative of a dark, corrupt past for blacks in the southern region of our nation.
This is such an important book because it describes how we used to be - how our society used to be so violent, vengeful, and WRONG... and how we should use this account of these brutal atrocities to learn how to never, ever repeat this, and to learn from the evils of racism. In order to fully appreciate the importance of this book, you must be willing to LEARN about the past and admit that there were mistakes and injustices back then, while also realizing that things are quite different now, but this did happen, and it should NEVER be forgotten.

this was a disturbing read for me. As a Kentuckian I was shocked and ashamed to read such a history of my state. I'm sure the book was factual. I was pleased that my birth area was not mentioned and also my family was Republican and according to the book the blacks and republicans were mistreated equally.
