Not what I was looking for but a good book
By Clark D. Read
I have only read about 1/2 the book so far, but as a pastor looking to facilitate healing in a congregation that has been through a lot of stuff I am not sure if this book is the answer. Yet, it has made me think and that is always a good thing! It is an easy read. I have found some sections more helpful than others, but realize those that didn't speak to me probably would speak to someone else. The point is I would recommend reading it, but if you are looking for an in-depth book on healing that is littered with scriptural references this is not the book. On the other-hand if you want an easy read that would challenge you personally, or open your eyes to other's struggles it is worth the time.

This is a difficult book to review in my opinion. First, I have very mixed emotions about the subject. I picked this to read because of the first part of the title. “Loving God When You Don’t Love the Church” caused me to wonder why on earth anyone would write a book with such a name. When I realized it was a pastor who was writing the book, I decided to explore.
My faith in God is probably stronger today than when I was over-involved in a local church. God allows trials and tests to come our way to strengthen us; and my life and the life of this author are no exception. Chris Jackson speaks of a heart that was tested, and he chose to trust God for the answer instead of throwing in the proverbial towel and walking away from his faith.
I once thought churches had so many more problems than other civic organizations until I have witnessed “blow-ups” in secular groups that rival anything I’ve seen in churches. But as a church, shouldn’t we be able to solve our problems in a better way if we really have faith in a living God? One would think, but that isn’t always the case. We all want to be in charge, we all have our own personalities and we often clash with others in the same groups. Bottom line: we aren’t perfect!
I do not think Jackson’s title statement, “When you don’t love the church” means we hate the church. It could be that we’ve been hurt, disappointed, disillusioned, and kicked in the butt a few too many times. Sometimes I’ve realized that we get to a place where it’s best to walk away and trust God for healing instead of continuing to be in a situation when we are beat on constantly. There are many churches that are unhealthy, too many it might seem.
Yet if we would all go to church with the attitude of worship directed towards God instead of trying to be the person those around us expect, we might have stronger churches. If the leadership would earnestly seek God for direction instead of teaching a popular message, churches might once again become what God wants them to be.
I do highly recommend this book to church members, as well as those who are feeling uncertain about trusting the church again. Well written!
