The traditional wonderful Rommel's biography

I have to admit that I can't be impartial about this book , may be because it has been one of the fisrt history books that I read, may be because I liked very much the style of writing of the author, may be because I have been fascinated by the Rommel's personality.
It is useless to say who has been Feldmarschal Erwin Rommel and so speaking about the book, I have to say that it is a very complete biography , with a foreword written by the English Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck , the one defeated by Rommel in the battles of Tobruk and Mersa Matruh.
The appendix is a little treasure because it includes considerations about the desert war and the campaign fought on 1942 directly written by Rommel himself (given to the author by the Rommel's son).
It is a book that for me it is unforgettable.

The Authentic Rommel!

"Rommel" by Desmond Young is one of the earliest, and still stands as one of the best-researched, examinations of the immortal Desert Fox. This book is one of the first sources (if not *the* first) that exposed the fact that Rommel was murdered by the Nazis for his part in the plot to overthrow Hitler, and did not in fact die of war wounds as the Nazis told the world.
Incidentally, this book is the basis for the outstanding film, "Rommel" which stars the superb James Mason, and which is available on DVD.
This book is an exhaustive look at Erwin Rommel from his childhood, through his service in WW1, and above all his role in the Second World War. The author develops a thesis with which not everyone concurs: that Rommel was an ethical and pure soldier, who held strictly to the rules of warfare, and avoided the kind of wrongful acts that characterized the Germans in other theaters of war. Personally I thought that the author made his case. It is hard to argue against the fact that the North Africa campaign, in which Rommel was the Allies' principal adversary, was fought with very strict adherence to the rules of war. In fact generals on both sides were occasionally criticized for being too cordial to captured officers of the other side. Massacres such as occurred against the Americans at the Battle of the Bulge, or the innumerable ones on the Russian Front, were unknown when Rommel was the opponent.
The author plainly developed a bit of hero-worship of Rommel, but this is understandable, as Rommel was arguably the best tactical general in the entire Second World War, and an ethical soldier besides. And it is hard not to admire someone who had the guts to conspire to kill Hitler, as Rommel in fact did.
Overall, this is one of the definitive works about Erwin Rommel, who is ultimately shown to be a tragic figure: a great general who awakens to the fact that he is fighting for both a wrong and lost cause. Highly recommended.

A Really Great & Honorable Soldier

This book was really an easy read & very informative about a really honorable warrior. I just wish [ as did the author ] that he was on our side. Even his enemy [ British & American ] respected this man for his fighting abilities & honor in battle . He would not murder prisoners, but let them go if he couldn't take care of them . His prisoners ate what he & his men ate , he was not antisemite,[ unlike Patton ] hated National Socialism & the dreadful nazis . At first respected Hitler until returning from Africa & realizing the atrocities he was committing & actually confronted him about about them. I have been doing art for some years & never thought I would do artwork about a German Officer, but upon reading about Erwin Rommel, I was so impressed, I immediately upon finishing this book began a pencil sketch of him. And then to find of his tragic end,[ at the hand of the nazis ] having to commit suicide to protect his family from the evil of Nazism. Also his wife & son seem to be of excellent honorable quality also. It was a very exciting book & hated to stop reading it even for supper..LOL . The war battles in it are awesome & really keeps you excited with the action back & forth & while I certainly wanted our side to win, I couldn't help but deep down, out of respect for this wonderful warrior & honorable soldier to root for him & hope no harm wouls befall him. It's a book I plan on keeping on my shelf to read again someday.
