Important intervention in feminist geography, Native American literary studies, and domestic fiction

Piatote provides insightful analysis and a useful theoretical framework, intervening in prominent studies of domestic fiction such as Amy Kaplan's "The Anarchy of Empire" by looking at the overlaps and frictions between settler-national, tribal-national, and personal domesticities. She furthermore adds to a growing body of work linking literature and feminist geography, such as Mishuana Goeman's "Mark My Words," Lisa Brooks' "The Common Pot," and Mary Pat Brady's "Extinct Lands, Temporal Geographies." This is an empowering book with the goal of "mak(ing) visible the resilience of the tribal-national domestic by centering the intimate domestic (the Indian home and family) as the primary site of struggle against the foreign force of U.S. national domestication" (4).
