Other storylines are set up: Rosanna King seems unable to have children, but is promised a forthcoming baby by a woman who has many; Nellie’s father reads forbidden scripture and becomes intrigued with salvation by grace. Amish dialect is used judiciously throughout, and although some items (like an old journal) seem like tired clichés, Lewis creates the tension necessary to get the series started. Some Christian readers will wonder about a theology that finds Suzy’s death and a crop failure part of God’s plan, and there may be confusion for readers unfamiliar with the Amish about the boundaries of Rumschpringe (rumspringa, or the running-around period for some Amish teens). Lewis has a gentle narrative style, however, and her fans will line up for this latest fictional slice of Amish life.

Best of Beverly Lewis

As far as I'm concerned, this trilogy of The Courtship of Nellie Fisher was the best of any of Beverly Lewis's books and I've probably read half of them maybe thirty or so. What I liked best about this whole series was that there was excellent lessons in how to witness to others about Christ. There were many practical lessons on that in these three books and they helped me immensely in my own witnessing.

Interesting, Educational, and Fun

There's so little I know about the Amish even though I visited Lancaster, PA, tasted their delicious home cooking , seen Amish entertainment, and admired their beautiful quilts, I was truly surprised by the traditions, day to day lifestyle and the constrictions of this culture that are masterfully woven into this story. It was truly an enjoyable read.

Looking forward to reading the others!

This is the first of three books about Nellie Fisher, followed by The Forbidden (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Book 2) and The Longing (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Book 3). I only purchased the first one because I was unsure if I would like it enough to read the others in the series. Upon finishing it however, I was disappointed I hadn't ordered the others too, because now I have to wait until they get here- I'm ordering them after I finish writing this!
I've only recently started reading Amish fiction, and this is my first experience with author Beverly Lewis. (I can however recommend Hidden (Sisters of the Heart, Book 1) and Wanted (Sisters of the Heart, Book 2) by Shelley Shepard Gray!) I know that this is not the most popular of Lewis' books, but the positive reviews speak for themselves. Lewis clearly knows her subject, and she's made the audience feel involved in this tale about Amish Nellie Mae. There are a few different plots swirling around in this story, and I think that is one of the things that makes it interesting. In a way the story deals with the 'circle of life'. There's a death of one of their own, a courtship, and new life. Religion of course also plays a strong part, and with that change.
The title, "The Parting" has at least two meanings for this story, and the next two- "The Forbidden" and "The Longing"- already have me anticipating what will happen. Overall I can give this story a solid four stars, and definitely recommend it to those who enjoy reading Amish fiction, or those simply looking to try something different.
