Two things Perry Hollow Police Chief Kat Campbell never thought she would do again: Enter a burning building, and lay eyes on Henry Goll, the man who was trapped inside with her the last time she was in one. So Kat's on high alert when, barely a year after the dust settled around the Grim Reaper killings, both happen on the same day.
She's jolted awake at 1a.m. by a desperate phone call telling her Perry Hollow's one and only museum—home to all the town's historical artifacts—has been set on fire. Arriving at the scene, Kat catches just a glimpse of Henry's face among the crowd before she's rushed into the charred building, only to find the museum curator dead…bludgeoned, not burned. Kat has lived through some tense moments and seen some gruesome crimes, but the next twenty-four hours will be the most dangerous of her life as she and Henry seek out a killer and the motivation behind these terrifying crimes.
Todd Ritter returns to the beloved town of Perry Hollow, Pennsylvania with Devil's Night, his most poignant, cleverly plotted novel yet.

An early-morning fire at the Perry Hollow (Pa.) Historical Museum and Exhibition Hall turns out to be the work of an arsonist, in Ritter's satisfying third mystery featuring big-hearted police chief Kat Campbell (after 2011's Bad Moon). Whoever set the fire also appears to have murdered Connie Bishop, the historical society's president, whose bludgeoned body is found in a crawl space below the museum's gallery. Written on the victim's hand in black marker are the words: this is just the first. A stranger Kat encounters at the scene may be a suspect. Meanwhile, Henry Goll, who was disfigured in the last major fire in Perry Hollow, a year earlier, unexpectedly reappears from Italy. A sack of old bones adds another puzzle, and an international developer has ambitious, unspecified plans for the town. Ritter smoothly blends history and mystery, tragedy and near-tragedy, as Kat courageously tracks down the culprit. Agent: Michelle Brower, Folio Literary Management. (Aug.)
From Booklist
Perry Hollow, Pennsylvania, Police Chief Kat Campbell has had more than her fair share of big cases (Death Notice, 2010). This time, Perry Hollow’s Historical Society and Exhibition Hall is set on fire, and two corpses are found inside—the first, the kindly curator, and the second, a previously unearthed skeleton. On Halloween, a historic hotel goes up in flames. Who’s torching the town’s landmarks? Still scarred from the torture he endured during the Grim Reaper killings, journalist Henry Goll is back in Perry Hollow to write about an Italian millionaire who just bought the town’s abandoned mill. Henry and Kat work together chasing leads—a disgruntled firefighter with an arrest record, a businesswoman banking on the mill sale going through, and a witch from Salem, Massachusetts, who believes the town has a long-buried Wiccan secret. Don’t let the small-town setting fool you; this is no cozy. The deaths are devastating, and single-mom Kat is a hardworking professional detective. A series well worth recommending. --Karen Keefe

“The ending sets things right in a storm of violence and revelations. An adroit puzzler with a genuinely surprising ending.” ―Booklist on Bad Moon
“The sophomore entry in the Kat Campbell series is steeped in deception and lies. Ritter sets the scene using the moon landings as the basis for a succession of crimes and keeps the reader guessing about the final outcome. His fully developed characters complement the flawless pacing.” ―RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars) on Bad Moon

Kat Campbell Battles a Deranged Pyromaniac in Todd Ritter's Explosive Mystery, "Devil's Night"
By J. B. Hoyos
On Halloween, a pyromaniac is setting fire to historical landmarks throughout Perry Hollow, Pennsylvania. Early in the morning, the museum is the first building to burn. After the smoke clears, the corpse of local historian Constance Bishop is found in the crawlspace. Stranger still, she is found lying on top of a trunk containing an ancient skeleton. As Kat and her friends, Nick Donnelly and Henry Goll, search for the pyromaniac's identity, more fires erupt, killing more people. Soon they discover the fires may be the revenge of a witch who was burned to death by the townspeople over three-hundred-years ago.
Todd Ritter's explosive mystery, "Devil's Night" [following "Death Notice" (Death Notice) and "Bad Moon" (Bad Moon)], is the most macabre, most horrifying novel in the Kat Campbell trilogy. All the action of this fast-paced thriller occurs within the timeframe of one day; and this day is one of my most loved holidays of the year, Halloween. All of my favorite holiday-themed slasher flicks of the seventies and eighties (e.g., "Halloween," "My Bloody Valentine," and "Black Christmas") were fondly remembered as I read "Devil's Night." In Perry Hollow, chaos reigns in the streets, vigilante rednecks are patrolling with shotguns, parties are canceled, and satanic symbols are found scrawled on buildings. People are dying! I love it!!
The icing on this already delicious cake is the horrible crime that the citizens of Perry Hollow perpetrated on an innocent woman many years ago. They killed her because she was different. Speaking of different, Henry Goll, looking like Dr. Victor Frankenstein's horribly scarred creation, returns to Perry Hollow. A reporter living in Rome, Henry is writing an article on the wealthy Italian, Giuseppe Fanelli, who has just bought a prime piece of Perry Hollow real estate for unknown reasons. Also returning to town is the crippled PI, Nick Donnelly, of Philadelphia. He is following on the heels of his beautiful girlfriend, Lucy Meade, a forensic anthropologist who has been asked to study the skeleton found in the museum's crawlspace.
All three main characters, Kat, Henry and Nick, are extremely scarred, physically and psychologically. In fact, "Devil's Night" has the most scarred cast of characters I have ever encountered in a mystery. I can't help but feel sadness when I read about them. On Halloween, all three nearly lose their lives, not once, but a multiple of times. Besides the horror and mystery, there is quite a bit of soap opera-like drama. Readers will be pleasantly surprised when they learn secrets about the characters' pasts, especially Henry. There were several times that I became teary eyed during the novel, usually when someone died or nearly died. I attribute this to the author's superb ability to create realistic, likeable characters and accurately depict them in tense, perilous predicaments.
It is possible to read "Devil's Night" as a standalone; however, because there are numerous references to the Grim Reaper killings and Eric Olmstead's search for his missing brother, I would recommend reading the Kat Campbell novels in order, beginning with "Death Notice." According to the author, Todd Ritter, this macabre series of modern gothic horror has ended with "Devil's Night." I was very disappointed. Though I support his decision to move on to a new series, I will keep hoping that he will someday return to Perry Hollow. There are still some unresolved issues. For example, Nick Donnelly hasn't found the person responsible for murdering his older sister Sarah. Nevertheless, Ritter's novels are highly recommended for fans of macabre mysteries, especially those with an occult element. Also, "Devil's Night" would be most enjoyed if read on or around Halloween.

Great book
By Starr Gardinier
Most times, I'm able to guess `who-did-it,' but not so in this case. Ritter gave me whiplash
from trying to guess who the culprit was. Just when I thought I had it all figured out--this is
cliché, I know, but so very true--Ritter surprised me and I realized I was wrong. And the end?
No way did I even come close to guessing it.
Kat Campbell is Perry Hollow's Police Chief. The town--and Kat--has already seen its
share of pandemonium. And now Kat is hoping things quiet back down again. But fire after
fire has her literally running all over town trying to save what's left of the historical buildings.
The first fire was the Historical Society and Exhibition Hall. And it's not just an arsonist Kat needs
to worry about. It's a murderer. The museum's curator Constance Bishop is found dead, slumped over a
wooden chest beneath the burning floor of the museum. The death wasn't a result of smoke inhalation or
the fire at all but from being whacked over the head. This is just the start of the next exhausting twenty-four
hours for Kat.
Her mind produces one suspect after another while she leaps headlong from one harrowing situation
into another, determined to stop the murdering arsonist from striking again. All while trying to figure out
the motive behind her town being attacked. It's a terrifying ordeal for her and those around her and she ends
up putting herself and others into very dangerous situations. The problem is, she's not sure if she can get out
of them alive before stopping the killer.
Ritter weaves a thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat, literally. This author is now at the top
of my `must-read' list.
