Q & A with author Cynthia Stackpole Snyder Cynthia Stackpole Snyder What led you to write this book?
A few years ago I was looking through the PMBOK Guide trying to figure out how to create a form for one of the processes, and I realized that it wasn’t that easy. I thought that it would be really helpful if there were forms that went with the PMBOK Guide so it would be easy to implement the processes described in the guide. You can get a lot of different forms for managing projects, but I knew it would be most helpful if there was a set of forms that was specifically aligned with the acknowledged standard for project management.
Why is there a new edition of the Book of Forms? The Book of Forms updates in conjunction with the PMBOK Guide. Because the PMBOK Guide is now in the Fifth Edition, and there are substantial changes from the Fourth Edition, the Book of Forms needed to be updated to align with the latest edition to keep the content fresh.
Why do professionals need a book like this?I think this book makes it easy for project managers who are operating in an organization without a lot of existing templates to organize and document information necessary to effectively manage their projects. I think these forms can be especially helpful for new project managers who don’t have a good grasp on how to organize their thoughts and the work of the project team. More experienced project managers will want to tailor the forms to meet their specific needs. The forms are very easy to tailor; I tailor them frequently when I manage projects.
Why is the new Project Manager’s Book of Forms a must-have book? There is a form in here for every plan and key output in the PMBOK Guide. Why spend the time and effort creating your own version of forms when there is a one-stop book that has over a hundred pages of forms to help manage projects? This book can save time and effort, and help people do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.

MS Word Forms
By Dave
This small book of forms covers the PMI basics and gives a good start point for any organization that has never used or developed these types of forms before. Each form is very basic, and is simply an empty template with no extras - no logos, notes, explanations etc. The best part is that inside the front cover is a link to download these from a website.
But who is this for? Especially at the price point?? You can get much better examples from various PMI and Project Management websites, and they're already in an electronic form. Unless you're photocopying the book and using a pen, or a typewriter, the book itself is worthless (unless you're after the download URL). There's a short intro to each form, that if you're PMI certified you already know, and if not the PMBOK has the information you need. I cannot imagine who would need this or benefit from it, but if you're out there, I'd suggest a serious google search for examples along with a PMI membership with access to the full library of PMI knowledge, instead of a short intro to an overly generic set of forms printed in a book. If you're set on it though, it's comprehensive and the forms are fairly professional.

Very generic/basic

Found much better examples of many project management documents online via the CDC's website and Project Management Docs websites. Disappointed.

Brings the PMBOK to life
By Geoffrey B
I have been involved with several "initiatives" at my company that should have been projects but weren't. Specifically, the scope and deliverables weren't really settled upon and there weren't clear sponsors. I got interested in project management because it seemed like there had to be a better way. To that end, I looked at Creative Project Management, CAPM/PMP Project Management Certification All-in-One Exam Guide with CD-ROM, Second Edition and, of course, the PMBOK (A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge: PMBOK(R) Guide), then in its 4th edition. The first taught me to think about projects, the second taught me a lot about the methodology and the third taught me, well, very little. The PMBOK is pretty dry, but it's ostensibly the gold standard in project management. Which brings us to the book of forms.
If you want to do project management the official way, the PMBOK gives you a lot of standards, but not a lot of how-to. The Project Management Book of Forms, on the other hand, takes the main segments of the PMBOK and translates them into forms to fill out. Even better, you can download them (docx format, so you'll need Word 2007 or higher or a converter) to print out or modify. And with each form, there are abundant instructions, referencing what part of the PMBOK standard each section fulfills. As a result, you can fill in the blank in making sure you're meeting the main standards. You can also use the forms for the initiation group to brainstorm and make sure you really have thought through what you're trying to do and what you're getting into as well (whereas a blank sheet or a prose write-up might allow you to leave out things you need to address but might have forgotten or avoided).
If you are new to project management or trying to get a handle on real world application of what's in the PMBOK, this is a great book to have.
