Aaron Früh is senior pastor of Knollwood Assembly of God in Mobile, Alabama. Author of The Decree of Esther and television host for TBN, he has traveled extensively for missions. In addition to pastoring, he takes part in humanitarian work in Israel. He and his wife, Sharon, have four children and live in Point Clear, Alabama.

A life-changing book

This book made me realize just how important words are and the profound and lasting effect that they have on others, whether positive or negative. We have the opportunity to bless or to curse those around us, and it is ultimately up to us to decide which one to choose. We may never know the hurts and issues that those around us may deal with on a daily basis because of words that were once spoken to them or over them, even if it occurred many years ago. We are given the ability to speak and can use this in a positive way by living a life of blessing and encouraging others on a day to day basis.
This book has changed my life. It is so practical yet gives so much insight into the Biblical aspect of blessing as well as modern examples and how the two intertwine. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a need and a desire to begin to change the way they speak to friends, coworkers, and particularly their family members. It is such an important concept to grasp and the lasting effects it can have on those who you come in contact with, even in generations to come.

An inspirational and practical guide

Pastor Aaron Fruh seeks an audience, a listening (and subsequently speaking) audience who will attentively hear the oft-convicting message of the power of words. Fruh, a Jewish Christian, asks readers to consider themselves and their reactions for a bit. He believes that a person's level of emotional stability can be measured in great part by the amount of verbal blessing he received as a child, and vice versa. If an individual was on the receiving end of verbal insults, blows, and negative soul-searing remarks, he will continue to battle this disapproving self-assessment for a lifetime. Fruh suggests that self-talk from a person who forever questions one's worth, nurses doubts about feeling different, and continually second guesses the ability to measure up has been on the receiving end of "curses" rather than blessings.
Fruh sets a foundation for this precept by describing what he observed as a life pattern while visiting Israel. During his visit, Fruh noticed that the Jewish people living in the Holy Land do one thing: "They consistently speak words of blessing and affirmation to one another." By offering such affirming statements, Fruh believes that God uses this ancient practice as a way to counteract "hell's councils and reverse the flow of iniquity from generation to generation." This verbal blessing, likewise, is especially powerful in bestowing wholeness, completion and healing to its recipients. The author is convinced that all people are desperate for verbal blessings, will do just about anything to receive them, and are shattered when they lose it. Fruh uses numerous Old Testament passages to further describe, define, and detail how such blessing/cursing affected biblical characters.
While Fruh's text is inspirational, it is also functionally practical and he offers ways men and women can positively affect those within their influence. Examining the eight specific parts of Jacob's blessing to his grandsons Ephraim and Manasseh in Genesis 48, readers will be better equipped to offer their own "blessing" ritual to others. These key portions of the consecration incorporated an understanding that blessing is a natural part of the Jewish life; it included a loving embrace and required a laying on of hands. The "blesser" shared his spiritual heritage and his words were characterized by "increase" and "expansion." Sensitive spiritual discernment by the blesser was a given. The blessing was verbal and spoken aloud, and it necessitated bold faith to bring results.
Of particular interest to modern-day believers is the chapter on blessing one's enemies, in which Fruh challenges Christians to follow in Jesus's stead in Matthew 5, when he commands his followers "...bless those who curse you..." By so doing, Christians are made complete and perfect in their faith, they are released from life's burdens as they trust God to vindicate, they set in motion a spirit of conviction in the offender, they are protected from God's judgment, set free and ultimately blessed as they obey.
Fruh's text concludes with a listing of ways Christians might "bless" their households and all that falls under their responsibility and rule. Perhaps the highlight of Fruh's work can be found in his ability to take a likely dry, biblical ritualistic topic and offer it with such heart that readers enthusiastically will put into practice his suggestions.

Incredible wisdom to reverse the curses of the past

The power of verbal blessing is an unfortunate underrated and often missing element shared among family members today. Unlike the Gentiles, the Jewish people have remained faithful to this potent practice and, as a result, have reaped generations that today embody success in nearly every field of endeavor. Aaron Fruh believes that the level of emotional stability we enjoy in adulthood is directly linked to the amount of verbal blessing we received in childhood.
Fruh shares characteristics of individuals living under a curse such as under the banner of artificial independence and self-sufficiency. He continues that because the iniquity of past generations have bruised us and left us uncovered, the adversary of our souls would like us to believe that we can succeed in covering ourselves. But what we do not realize is that a self made covering is actually the mantle of the adversary himself, who falsely promises to protect us and satisfy our every need. Additionally he states God is still pleading with uncovered men and women everywhere to allow Him to be their covering.
Restoring that which has been bruised however is the focal point of this book. Himself a victim of generational wounds that developed in him self protected walls, he candidly shares his story that ends in victory. You too will learn how to nullify the effects of abuse with now verbal blessing. He believes "As we bless others, so in turn God blesses us, and in addition, we are rewarded with the gates of our enemies."
Practical ways of how to speak the blessing over family members will set you and your family on a journey of healing and wholeness. The author wants you to believe your future will outweigh the pain of your past. Learn the benefits of blessing your enemies and how to unlock a double portion of blessing by maintaining a forgiving spirit.
This book, I believe, if put into practice, would considerably reduce the crime rate and propel many into avenues of greatness. These principles will set captives free and homes ablaze with the love of God.
