Drawing freely and expertly from Continental and analytic traditions, Richard Bernstein examines a number of debates and controversies exemplified in the works of Gadamer, Habermas, Rorty, and Arendt. "A fascinating and timely treatment of the objectivism versus relativism debates occurring in philosophy of science, literary theory, the social sciences, political science, and elsewhere."—Choice

Equipped with a synoptic point of view, Bernstein has long worked the difficult terrain between continental philosophy and its more positivist Anglo-American counterpart. Here he traces what he believes is a key movement away from the broad modern tradition characterized by Descartes and the perennial search for philosophical foundations. Not always self-consciously, this emerging movement (Gadamer, Rorty, et. al.) rejects the Cartesian search for absolutes as ultimately futile; yet refuses to accept relativism as the only remaining recourse. The book's burden is to show how a viable `third way' is in fact emerging from the overlaps in the movement. His discussion is stimulating, ranging from Aristotle to Kuhn to Habermas, Kant and Arendt. No doubt he has put his finger on an acutely felt issue of our skeptical age, one that lurks ubiquitously in the background of more narrowly framed topics. Yet, how effectively this third way manages to extricate itself from the either-or of objectivism vs. relativism is up to the individual reader to judge. Frankly, I was disappointed, feeling that the results were unduly vague and pointing in the direction of a sophisticated brand of sociological relativism. Be that as it may, the text includes not a single mention of post-modernism, which may date the work in the eyes of some. Still, the meta-philosophical issue Bernstein addresses can be discussed quite apart from those specific to post-moderns and their recourse to outright relativism. As always, Bernstein remains an important interpreter of international trends and is well worth the read.

Toward a Deeper Understanding of Understanding
By Robert William DeMarco
Richard Bernstein is one of the most balanced and deeply thoughtful Americans doing philosophy today. Thoroughly at home in several different schools of contemporary thought, he writes with exceptional clarity and generosity of spirit. This book is one of his most important. At a time when most Americans seem convinced that objectivism and relativism are our only options and that if objectivism is ultimately incoherent nothing remains but a relativism that ultimately makes conversation impossible, this book can be a life-saver! Respectful of what the physical and life sciences can do and contribute, Bernstein makes clear the limits of their methods and the reasonableness of turning to alternative ways of knowing and thinking for other realms of meaning, value, and reality. A careful reading of this book could save everybody years of wandering up and down blind alleys. This is philosophy written to communicate with others and to be helpful, rather than to inflate the author's ego and display sophistication. It can change the way you inhabit the world and put your feet on a path that takes you in the direction of hope and solidarity.

Required reading for contemporary philosophy!
By Trash Gordon
Are we the measure of the all things or is truth independent of our beliefs and wishes? Bernstein begins tackling this question by observing that the real debate is not between absolutism and relativism but between...(well, read the title!) He claims that while few (philosophers anyway) believe that truth is eternal, many at least believe that it is not merely about our own subjectivity. But the real question for Bernstein is Why all the fuss? Is there a certain tone of anxiety present in the discussion? Bernstein says that indeed there is and it's due to conflicts in concern between the need to believe in a stable reality and the fear that rheified cultural schemes can become the basis of intellectual and social tyrany- Bernstein calls this a "pracical-moral concern" and manages to discuss it without presuming that there are no serious theoretical issues involved. I'm an absolutist myself (what a philosophical dinosaur I am!) and I found this book so enthralling that I engaged in frquent, feverish marginal annotating (and in my schools, you didn't buy the texts so you DID NOT mark them up). Whatever your philosophical persuasion, this book should bring some illumination along with many happy moments of reading. At this price, it's a bargain. GET IT!

Review
This is a highly ambitious book which seeks to map the key changes in global knowledge capitalism, their impact on education and the labour market and their effects on the structuring of individual identities as students and workers. It is high time that we had a work of this kind which enables us to think through the relationships and issues that are posed by contemporary capitalism. Michael Tomlinson is to be commended for providing a crucial resource in debates over how we create relationships between educational, societal and economic institutions which are just and effective. Hugh Lauder, Professor of Education and Political Economy, University of Bath, UK Clear in its presentation of concepts, thorough in its treatment of debate, this book crosses disciplinary boundaries to illuminate issues that are at the heart of current educational conflict and change. Ken Jones, Professor of Education, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK Michael Tomlinson's book is notable for its impressive scholarship. He draws on wealth of literature to discuss the way in which writers have explored the themes of education, work and identity and their interrelationship. This is a coherent and clearly written text that makes a significant contribution to the literature on educational studies and provides a valuable resource for undergraduate students and those with a general interest in the above themes. James Avis, Professor of Post-compulsory Education, University of Huddersfield, UK This is a serious and insightful analysis of the relationships between education and the economy. Tomlinson's book examines the complex and changing relations between education institutions, the economy and labour markets, in times of state re-organisation and wider global economic, social and cultural shifts. Using primarily a sociological approach within an interdisciplinary framework, individual people's experiences of education and labour market institutions are at the core of the book. An eloquent account of shifting identities, and an indispensable book for all those interested in the changing purposes, forms and outcomes of formal education in contemporary industrialised societies. Nafsika Alexiadou, Professor of Education, University of Umea, Sweden This excellent and well-written book makes an important contribution to sociological work on the relationship between education, work and identity and offers a fresh analysis of debates on the purpose and value of education. Michael Tomlinson confidently steers the reader through some complex and contested debates about the changing nature of the relationship between education and work and about how individuals - whether as educational workers or learners- are positioned by such change. This book deserves a wide readership but it should appeal especially to students of education and sociology. Farzana Shain, Senior Lecturer in Education, Keele University, UK

The best Christian fantasy adventure story in many years
By Robin of Sherwood
I have enjoyed the whole Guardian King series by Karen Hancock more than any of the other contemporary Christian fantasy stories I have read over the last several years. Of the four books in the series, this is the one I keep coming back to read again and again. With the background and character development of the first book to build upon this one starts with a bang right in the first chapter. I like the way the author portrays the lead character in his role as king - not a king to be served by his people but one to serve and protect them no matter what the cost to himself. Our world has long been missing that kind of role model in a king figure.

THE SHADOW WITHIN
By Karen Hancock

Karen Hancock has become one of my favorite authors. I knew I'd found a treasure when I read her debut novel THE ARENA. Then I was trilled to find she had begun a series called LEGENDS OF THE GUARDIAN KING.

This medieval epic is both excitingly new with its introduction of an unfamiliar world and all its unique characters and, at the same time, warmly familiar with its Arthurian similarities.

The pictures she creates, with her marvelous writing skill, almost make me feel like I am sitting back watching a movie, unaware that I am turning the pages. My surroundings fade and I am immersed in the scenery laid out before me.

The story is about Abramm Kalladorne as he returns to his home, Kiriathan, after 4 years of banishment. Most thought him long dead. They are very surprised at the transformation he has undergone as he makes his rightful claim for the throne. Many oppose him, especially his younger brother, Gillard, who assumed he would become King in Abramm's absence.

Abramm finds he must continually prove himself worthy of the crown and knows he is in constant peril from Gillard and those who are loyal to him. He must also beware of the Mataian's plans to use him as they had been preparing to do before he escaped being possessed by their demon god years ago.

His greatest battle comes from within. He must keep his faith in Eidon and trust that Eidon will accomplish His will through Abramm as long as Abramm doesn't give in to the dark side of his nature. The Shadow within is easily manipulated by the power of the Mataian god when it is allowed to direct his thinking and never ceases its attempt to control his will.

The author clearly demonstrates the supernatural battle between good and evil, the deceptiveness of prejudices that prevent us from seeing the truth, and the distortions of that truth that fool us and ultimately ensnare us.

This second book is a wonderful and exciting new chapter in the life of Abramm following the transformation he underwent in the first of the series, THE LIGHT OF EIDON. Several issues are left unresolved to lead you into the 3rd book. The ending is very satisfying but you can't help but long to get your hands on the next installment.

Annie's Decision
By Tamela Mccann
The final book in the trilogy Annie's People, The Brethren picks up with Annie beginning her six month agreement with her preacher father to not paint anything. Annie has also moved into the home of her friend, Essie, who is a shunned member of the Amish community for having come to believe in a religious thought different than their own. Also back is Ben, the Englisher of the previous novel, who is trying to grapple with his own identity and his love for Annie.

Lewis is an excellent storyteller and this novel brings the Amish community to life vividly. I could sympathize with Annie and her torn heart, and I could appreciate the mysteries surrounding the appearance of Ben. However, a couple of things really bothered me while reading this one. Lou's role is definitely reduced in this novel and after becoming so emotionally vested in her troubles, I would have liked to have seen more closely how she faced her return to the modern world. Also, things seemed tied up a little too neatly at the end; I needed to know more about Isaac's kidnapping and how he felt about giving up his former identity. The ending to this one seemed particularly rushed and I agree that Lewis should have spread this story out over the course of two books. Finally, Lewis does tend to become preachy at times, but that is a hallmark of her stories and should not bother anyone who enjoys inspirational fiction. Overall this is a well-done book and another fine example of Lewis's ability to share the Amish life and create characters who will live in your heart for a long time to come. Recommended!

She Thought She Was Leaving the Rat Race Behind... Gemologist Andie Adams is suffering a bad case of burnout in her stress-filled job in New York. So she jumps at the chance to ditch her wormy corner of the Big Apple for a home in Kentucky with her lovable but off-the-wall Aunt Weeby. After all, things should be slower paced in Kentucky--right? Wrong. Andie reluctantly joins the Shop-Til-U-Drop Network as its newest jewelry and gemstone show host. Sparks fly between her and the know-nothing (but drop-dead gorgeous) jock they've hired as her cohost. And when Andie's job exposes her to a international investigation, the mayhem escalates during an exotic journey. Explosions, missing gems, sabotage--life was never this exciting in New York! Former newspaper reporter Ginny Aiken discovered books at a very early age, writing her first novel at age fifteen. She is the author of the Silver Hills Trilogy and the Deadly Décor Mysteries. This Book's Got It All!
By Christy
Okay, I confess that I am completely and hopelessly now addicted to chick-lit. I just love, love, LOVE it! Since I fully intend to read much more of it in the future, I'm definitely going to have to be on the lookout for new authors and good recommendations for existing releases that are out there. As for this author....I've read some of her other books in the past, and really enjoyed them, but I had no idea that she had branched out into chick-lit. Thank goodness, she's written a whole series--not just one book--so I can get a good fill of chick-lit from an author that is already an A+ in my book. :o)

This book has several things that I just love. First of all, Andie works with diamonds and gemstones all the time. Seriously, is there any other job out there greater than that for a girl?!?! Then, on top of that, she's been offered an incredible opportunity in Louisville (of all places) to work for the Shop-Til-U-Drop (S.T.U.D.) Network as their jewelry host. So, she gets to be around all this jewelry AND be on tv...just too cool, in my opinion. And, just to keep it even more interesting, there's a little mystery thrown in there and what seems like might be a developing romance. Since there's 2 other books in the series, I expect that possible romance to play out furthur a little later on. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that this book is set in the south. Andie's travels do take her to a couple of other places around the world, but the fact that home for her is now in Kentucky puts a whole new spin on things.

I also got a kick out of the supporting characters. Aunt Weeby, Andie's aunt, is hilarious! She is a southern gal to the core, and has an opinion on practically everything. Her opinion doesn't come off as know-it-all, but rather "I know just a tidbit about what you're talking about, and I'm gonna put it my two cents." Then, there's Miss Mona, the owner of the S.T.U.D. Network. She's a no-nonsense person, but sweet as she can be. Finally, there's Max...Andie's tv cohost, and stud extraordinaire. He also happens to be the first male hired to work at the S.T.U.D. Network...go figure. :o) The on-screen scenes between Andie and Max had me laughing out loud because Max is such a dunce about jewelry! That flusters Andie to no end, but everyone else just eats it up!

With all that said, I absolutely cannot wait to finish out this series! It also makes me want to gather up everything ever written by Ginny Aiken and just gobble it up (sorry now...we say stuff like that in the south).

A great start for this awesome series!
By Valerie
Andrea "Andie" Adams is a master gemologist, and proud of it. She works in the high-stress diamond district in New York, and has three ulcers to prove it. Thinking a lower stress situation might be better, she jumps at the chance to quit her job and move back to Kentucky when her aunt breaks a leg and needs some assistance.

Not long after Andie arrives in Kentucky, she finds that Aunt "Weeby" and her best friend Mona are already scheming on Andie's behalf. Needing a job anyway, she decides to go along with their crazy idea to be the jewelry and gemstone host for Mona's TV Shopping network. Things go fine until Andie is introduced to her gorgeous co-host, Max, five minutes before her first show. Co-host? Andie was supposed to be the only host for the show!

It quickly becomes apparent that Max knows absolutely nothing about jewelry or gemstones, and he seems determined to rub Andie the wrong way by displaying that fact several times during each show. Things escalate from there...murder...a trip to an exotic poverty stricken country...missing rubies...flying bullets.... these might not be the typical ingredients for a chic-lit, but it works! And through it all, Mr. Magnificent (as Andie secretly calls him) Max continues to display his lack of gemstone knowledge.

My opinion: This was a really enjoyable Christian Chick-Lit read. Andrea "Andie" is a pretty fun character whose sarcastic mouth often gets the better of her. Max's lack of gemstone knowledge is often humorous and fun, but I felt that Andie was really too hard on him. He is not a "know-nothing jock" (as Andie puts it) -- he's not unintelligent in the least -- he just doesn't have a bunch of gemstone degrees from different colleges like Andie does. But this does make for some humorous shows on the tv shopping network!

I definitely recommend the whole Shop-Til-U-Drop series. If you liked this one, make sure to also read A Steal of a Deal (Book 2) and A Cut Above (Book 3), as the series just gets better with each book!

From the Inside Flap
EXCERPT FROM CATALOG "Thanks for coming to share in our happiness, Wes," Josh gripped his hand. "One day, it's going to be your turn." "Oh, I doubt that. I'm not the marrying kind." "Don't you mean no one could put up with you?" Josh teased his new friend. "You may be exactly right. Horses are my main focus and I haven't found a gal yet that wanted to share in horse training for her future." He shrugged his shoulders. "You never know, Wes. When one falls in love, stranger things can happen." Juliana said. "I'm looking for a young man who rode up this afternoon when I was training Ed's mare. Never seen him before but I think he must have been one of your guests that came in late." "You must mean my sister, April," Josh pointed across the room, indicating the woman in a yellow dress. Wes followed to where he pointed. His jaw dropped. An attractive, slender blonde stood chatting with Margaret and Louise. "No, Josh. It was a young man in a long duster and floppy hat." No way that this was the same person that he saw in dirty jeans and duster shouting at him earlier! Josh shook his head. "I'm trying to tell you--it was April, my sister over there. Come on, I'll introduce you to her."

A Love of Her Own - April McBride's story
By L. Smith
I'm so happy to finally know what happens to Josh McBride's sister, April! Ever since I first met this blonde-haired spit-fire in No Place for a Lady, I've wondered how her story was gonna play out. It was a wild ride, just as I had suspected!

Though April was my least favorite person back then, she finally redeems herself in her own story. She still comes across as a little selfish, very independent, and somewhat spoiled. All in all, this makes for a really fast-paced read. It was nice to catch up with some of the folks from The Jewel of His Heart, but Josh and Juliana were hardly even mentioned (they were on their honeymoon!).

Wes Owen turns out to be such a sweetheart -- I'm so glad! I wanted to like him in The Jewel of Her Heart, but he was still rough around the edges. He has since straightened out his life, and become one delicious horse trainer. ;)

There are lots of great secondary characters, one of which is Billy Taylor, a young orphan who loves horses almost as much as April. He became one of my favorite people right from the start. It was also lots of fun getting to know Natalie, Louise, Miss Margaret, and so many more of the folks who reside in Lewistown, Montana.

I only have one "complaint" with this book -- the very abrupt, slam-the-door in your face ending. I mean, WOW! One minute you're sitting there, enjoying a historical moment with April, Wes, Billy, and their friends -- then, a few pages later, the story is over! I didn't see it coming and was unpleasantly surprised. I still had a few questions that weren't yet answered. What happened to Billy (he's one of my favorite characters)? Did he find a permanent home with Morgan and Lenora? Did anything serious develop between Louise and Mark? What did April's parents think about her decision to stay in Montana? I just felt unsettled at the end; like I wasn't given time to prepare. Maybe it's just me, and it didn't/won't bother anyone else. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely worth reading - I was just a little disappointed.

If you haven't read any of Maggie Brendan's books, be sure to pick up this series and read them from beginning to end. The characters are wonderful and will seem like family in no time. You can visit Maggie at her blog: SouthernBelle Writer.

A Love of Her Own
By C. Kendall
I have become quite fond of Maggie Brendan's books and her newest book, A Love of Her Own has added to my fondness of her books. There are so many things to like about this book. First of all, I found it very relaxing. I like being taken back to places like Montana during the late 1800s. It provides a lovely backdrop to this story. The author has included a lot of details that make this story feel very real. It was also fun to see the same characters that were in the previous book, The Jewel of His Heart. Although, April's initial perception of Lewistown was quite different from Juliana's, if my memory serves me correctly.

April was not the easiest character to like in the beginning. She was spoiled and selfish and did not care what others thought about her, but watching her character grow and change was fun to watch. I liked how April was written, her character was unique and despite her spoiled ways, I found myself rooting for her.

Once again, Maggie Brendan's writing has left me with a happy feeling that I have come to expect from her books. I highly recommend A Love of Her Own or any of Maggie's books for that matter. I cannot wait to see what she writes next.

good read
By Rebecca M.
I absolutely fell in love with this series, starting with No Place for a Lady. I at first didn't like April as she was the 'mean' girl in the first book but then we see her grow up and develop maturity and a heart. I was disappointed with the ending, feeling as if it was so abrupt and just too fast. I was rather anxious on how her parents would take her wedding, or i wish there would have been an epilogue. But other than that, I enjoyed this series.
