A Prequel to Son's Of Zeus by Noble Smith!

Last evening Noble Smith graciously sent this brief prequel to his novel Son's Of Zeus. The year is 432 BC, in Palataea Greece, and if you know my love of Greek mythology, you know I would have been hooked right then and there

It's here we encounter Nikias, young and hot headed, quick to speak without thought, and much to his dismay on the losing side of battle drills. To add insult to injury he's also been humiliated in front of his grandfather, General Menesarkus, hero of the Persian Wars.

In a heated moment Nikias makes the mistake of challenging a loudmouthed soldier named Axe and finds himself in what appears to be a no win situation, in front of not only his grandfather, but also the very beautiful Kallisto

What a taste!

First off I want to say thank you to the author, Noble Smith, for giving me this prequel to read. What a delicious little bite this was! I have yet to read Sons of Zeus and this was the perfect taste beforehand. The author has a great voice here and I'm very intrigued to know more about Nikias. Even though this prequel was short I think it displayed everything it needed to in order to engage the reader more. There are questions unanswered and I know that I for one will be jumping Sons of Zeus higher up on my to-read list after what I just read.

Great intro!

Very nice. I enjoyed this short story which I received from the author today. It was a bonus teaser in addition to the novel Sons of Zeus, which I won as a First Reads giveaway on GoodReads.

Well, I will say that if this short work is any indication of what I can expect to see in the novel, I'm looking forward to that one.

It had me re-evaluating my own attitudes

Sweet Mercy by Ann Tatlock is a well written novel about a young lady in the midst of entering adulthood. Eve is faced with the knowledge that someone she loves is a criminal and not turning him would make her a criminal, too. As an adolescent, she sees everything in black and white. The grayness of the situation confuses her, and she is forced to re-evaluate everything she has believed about right and wrong.
As I read this novel I saw quite a bit of myself in Eve. I could relate to her journey from a black-and-white, judgmental mentality to a more empathetic, understanding being. This is a difficult journey for one who wishes to be empathetic to others without compromising their own personal convictions.
On the back of the book the description begins by saying that this is a "stunning coming-of-age drama set during the Great Depression and prohibition." I found this to be a very accurate statement. I was drawn back to my own coming of age days as an adolescent constantly trying to determine where she stands on a multitude of subjects. I don't think this novel could have been better written. I am a better person for having read it.
There is some romance in the book, but very little as compared to the Christian fiction romance genre. I would consider this to be in a slightly broader, historical fiction genre. It is a deeper read than most of the books published by Bethany House, but the quality of the writing and plot is consistent with the Bethany House reputation.
In my opinion, Ann Tatlock's experience is reflected in this novel, as I am sure it is in her over twenty other novels already released. Ann won the 2012 Christy Award for the Contemporary/Standalone category.

A great book with an enjoyable story!

I wasn't sure what to expect of the book Sweet Mercy. I had never read anything by Ann Tatlock before, but the cover drew me in, along with the description of the book. When I received a free copy of the book, I didn't hesitate to dive right in. I am very glad I read this book because I found it very entertaining and enjoyable.

The book starts with a Grandma and her grandson. They are returning to a house from the Grandma's childhood and as it is filled with memories, the Grandma tells her grandson the story of her childhood. We are then transported back to 1931 when Eve Marryat, the Grandma in the story, is a young girl of 17. A year and a half after the stock market crashed, Eve finds herself moving to Ohio with her family to live with her Dad's brother. There they work for her uncle who owns the Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge.
Leaving behind St. Paul and its den of gangsters and lawbreakers, Eve is anxious to find herself in a safe haven. However, during the time of Prohibition, Eve will soon learn that Ohio is anywhere but a safe haven. When she runs into bootleggers and their still, she must decide what she must do and who she can trust.

I really liked the cast of characters that Ann Tatlock created. There were some that you found yourself liking a lot, and then others that were disagreeable right from the start. I especially found myself drawn to Link. However, because of the circumstances in the book, I was unable to determine who I should "trust" along with Eve.
The twists and turns in this book make for a great story that will keep you guessing as to how everything will be resolved.

I found the time period to be interesting as well. I believe I have only read one book about Prohibition before this one and as I enjoyed that one very much, I was excited to read another book about the same time period. Sweet Mercy did not disappoint and I am very glad I had the chance to read it. This is a book that I am glad found its way to my bookshelf... and I plan to keep it there!

Edgar Hoover's all-white, all-male bureau in 1969. Presenting his work as a series of telling anecdotes, Owens often finds the comedy in his job (the standard punchline involves surprisingly easy-to-find fugitives) as well as the thrills, such as a stint with the FBI SWAT team, putting down a 1987 Atlanta prison riot started in part by Cuban inmates formerly held in Castro's prisons (a '94 riot followed in Alabama). Along with the tedium, ironies and tragedies of his decades in the field, Owens also details his work on one of the most shocking cases in U.S. criminal history, the Atlanta child murders in the early '80s. A well-written, interesting, entertaining, book.

The author spent 30 years as an FBI Special Agent. The first-hand accounts that he relates in his book gave me a different perspective of the FBI. Each chapter is filled with interesting and entertaining situations that the author encountered. I like his style of writing. This is, frankly, one of the best books I have read in recent years and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I wanted to like this book, but regrettably I didn't

First of all, I'd like to congratulate Mr. Owens on a remarkable career and for the contribution he made to the safety of the country. All of us owe a special debt of gratitude to men and women like Jack who worked hard for many years. Thank you for that.

Having been a Special Agent myself, I truly appreciated some of the stories Jack told. One of the big problems I have with this book is it is all narration and virtually no dialogue. It's written like an FD-302 or a Letterhead Memorandum. No talk between people made this book far less enjoyable to me. Jack needs to take a class in creative writing and learn that action plus dialogue are what advance a story. Not narration. Right off the bat I didn't like that and it made the book hard to read, particularly since I'm a published writer myself.

Secondly, Jack made it apparent why a lot of law enforcement people don't like the FBI. I thought he was lording it over police and sheriff's departments by saying, at least once, something like "We were better trained and more highly paid than them." Those of us who have gone through police academies before the FBI Academy realize just how poor the training at the academy truly was.

I also got tired of hearing "and we handcuffed him the Bureau way." There were several things like that which I felt were condescending statements as if only the bureau knew how to do things.

The story about the bombing murder of a judge was basically glossed over in this book. That was an extremely huge story, yet Jack didn't explain anything about the suspect or how he was identified. I knew of the case, and also know who the killer was related to. I don't understand why, with such a highlight case, that was given such short shrift.

Some of the stories in the book are interesting, but some of the fugitive arrests and other cases were really nothing more than the normal work most agents do. I do, however, love the title. Very imaginative.

okay if you don't read it just based on the title then you're a weirdo. actually that's the entire reason I got it, because the title was funny. I think I'm 20 pages in(kindle fire is now recharging) but I've been laughing non stop since I started it...probably NOT the reaction the former FBI agent is looking for, well maybe he was I don't know I don't know the man. but its hilarious. I wish he'd written this book 15 years ago when I was doing stupid reports and speeches on the FBI for school, his stuff would have been better material then the dry stuff back then.

You will smile and take stock of your own life as you read this series, the Amish lifestyle at home, at work, at play and at church. The Crossroad holds a key to a very tragic happening and has a lot to do with all that comes after, the crossroad is one of the greatest books Beverly Lewis has written, but they are all very good. You can not go wrong buying this book, my daughters and I could hardly wait on each other to read her next book in this series. I think Beverly Lewis has the ability to create a lifelike you are there quality in her books, Great Work Beverly please do not stop giving us the pleasure of your great books. Margie B. White

Safely read at The Crossroad.

I was very eager to open this book, and it took me a little over a day to read this. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed The Heritage of Lancaster County and The Postcard. I thought that towards the end Rachel would shut the door on Philip, only to see that somehow God told Philip to go back to where Rachel lives, and then have his whole life changed to the Amish ways. I eagerly await more fictional books on the Amish. I only got started.

An intriguing story line!

I found this book to be quite exciting and even a bit adventurous. Carolina continues to keep her faith and rely on God through the hard times that come up against her. She stumbles like everyone else, but truly cares about the well being of the people around her. You'll go with her as she comes to cope with the problems that encompass her, while she and her husband James try to maintain a home. Her mind is intrigued in the railroad building around her, and she finds all the information she can on it. Not many people encourage her to continue an education, however. Only her husband and father understand her need to learn. She finds out that marriage is the fairy tale she dreamed it would be, James is rarely home and her children take up a big part of her time. She learns the real meaning of marriage, but it is a joy to her as she grows in her role as wife and mother. She learns the true meaning of real love. I found it a wonderful Christian, romance novel that keeps you on the edge of your seats. I am hoping for the 4th one in the series.

Very good story!

This story takes place after James and Carolina's marriage at the end of "A Hope Beyond." As their family continues to grow, James and Carolina leave their beautiful Baltimore home and move to a small house further west so that James can be close to the expanding B&O Railroad, but still be able to come home at night most of the time. Adopted daughter Victoria falls in love with Kiernan O'Connor, a young Irishman who works closely with James, but at the same time, Kiernan's older brother Red constantly works to turn other workers against James and each other, with tragic results. If the story doesn't quite seem finished to you, it's important to read the 3 books in the "Ribbons West" series too!

Good book, worth reading, but not the best of the three.

I truly liked this book if only for the continuance of the charactors. The story line has lots of variety and could be said to be many stories into one. It starts almost exaclty where the last book ended with the lives of Carolina, James, & Victoria learning to become a family. What I really enjoyed about this book and the series is the historical aspect that just so happens to center around my hometown as well as the fact that the author makes references to obvious historical persons.
