Get a grip on the Bible's prophecies
By James W. Reapsome
Stan Guthrie demystifies Bible prophecies for those who limit their thinking to what the future will bring. In careful, clear prose he looks at how the biblical writers made some astounding predictions that literally came true. Therefore, we can trust that those prophecies yet to be fulfilled will be fulfilled in days to come. He opens with 11 prophecies about Israel, continues with 14 about the nations, five about once and future kings, seven about Christ's first advent, eight about his life and ministry, eight abut his death and resurrection, three about the church, and five about the last days. This helpful compenduium is made even more useful with thoughtful questions of personal spiritual growth and application.

Concise guide to bible prophecy is right on
By Pamela Pittman
I wish I could aptly discribe the joy I felt while reading Stan Guthrie's book. I like Bible study in most forms but this book takes it a step further and helps to solve a lot of mystery and just clarifies prophecy and leaves one looking so forward to the events that have and will continue to unfold before us. Thanks so much Stan!

Big-Box Bosco
By Lou Allin
Welcome to innocent downtown Laingford, heart of Ontario cottage country, gridlock in summer, snowmobile exhaust in winter. Rural puppetmaker and cabin dweller Polly Deacon takes the thankless but lucrative job of designing a bovine mascot for an incoming big-box store. Municipal politics pit one townsperson against another, Polly's peppery Aunt Susan forms the League for Social Justice, and small businessfolk quiver, though the giant corporation promises jobs for all. Can Kountry Pantree (sic) be trusted? Why is the mayor so nervous? Do the upscale lodge owners have a stake in the outcome? Polly's boyfriend, Officer Mark Becker, in temporary charge of his eight-year-old webmaster son, seems anxious to move their tenuous relationship to a sobering upper level. As maverick Polly wonders if she's compromised her principles, an accident turns fatal, and suddenly suspects lurk behind every maple tree.
H. Mel Malton cranks up the woodstove in this third entry in her popular amateur sleuth series. Witty prose, velvet one minute, acerbic the next, complements a plot which pulls the reader in all directions. The humour is wry and the characters as full-bodied as the Kuskawa Cream Ale which brands the region: "a rugged, exquisite landscape full of deep, cold lakes, pink granite bedrock and dense forests...a tourist magnet, a resort developer's wet dream and a haven for artists." Spend an afternoon fishing on the sunny town docks, then follow the intrepid Polly as she tracks a killer. Oh, waiter, make mine a black cow to go.

Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization, by Akbar Ahmed

Globalization, the war on terror, and Islamic fundamentalism—followed closely by a rise in Islamophobia—have escalated tensions between Western nations and the Muslim world. Yet internationally renowned Islamic scholar Akbar Ahmed believes that through dialogue and understanding, these cultures can coexist peacefully and respectfully. That hope and belief result in an extraordinary journey. To learn what Muslims think and how they really view America, Ahmed traveled to the three major regions of the Muslim world the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia. Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization is the riveting story of his search for common ground. His absorbing narrative and personal photos bring the reader on a tour of Islam and its peoples. Ahmed sought to understand the experiences and perceptions of ordinary Muslims. Visiting mosques, madrassahs, and universities, he met with people ranging from Pakastan President Pervez Musharraf to prime ministers, princes, sheikhs, professors, and students. He observed, listened, and asked them questions. For example, who inspires them? What are they reading? How do the Internet and international media impact their lives? How do they view America, the West, and changes in society? Ahmed's anthropological expedition enjoyed extensive access to women and youths, revealing unique information on large yet often misunderstood populations. Lamentably, he found high levels of anti-Americanism and anti-Semitism and a widespread perception that Islam is under attack from the West. But he also brought back reason for hope. He returned from his groundbreaking travels both impressed with the concerned, kind nature of the individuals he encountered and invigorated with the vitality and passion they displayed. Journey into Islam makes a powerful plea for forming friendships across religion, race, and tradition to create lasting peace between Islam and the West.

From Publishers Weekly
In response to the events of September 11, 2001, Ahmed, Islamic studies professor at American University in Washington, D.C., set out last year to visit Muslim nations in the Middle East, South Asia and Far East Asia. Accompanied the entire way by two non-Islamic American students and occasionally by others—including one American student who was Islamic—the Pakistani-born professor hoped to improve his understanding of the contemporary Muslim realm in all its diversity. Not so incidentally, Ahmed also wanted to shatter the stereotype of the U.S. as a warmongering, Islam-hating nation. The result is a fascinating account of how he and his students braved danger to build mutual understanding in Pakistan, India, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Qatar, Malaysia and Indonesia. As academics, they administered detailed questionnaires to Muslims in each nation, while as social creatures, they sat through seminars, luncheons, dinners and casual conversations looking for a candid exchange of ideas about religious, political and cultural differences. Occasionally Ahmed lapses into academese, loses his humility or generalizes beyond what the evidence seems to support. But mostly he comes across as an honorable man who believes that the future of the human race depends on international dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims. (June)

Antidote to Clashing Civilizations
By Brian Forst
Akbar Ahmed is a welcome departure from the roar of Muslim rage. Journey into Islam, his latest book, is an anthropological account of his 2006 travel with a team of research assistants to the three major regions of the Muslim world: the Middle East, South Asia and East Asia. It tells of mutual suspicions between the West and Islam, fed by stereotypes of the other, and how those perceptions can be reversed through direct personal exchange, how conversations even with extremists can change minds. It offers Ahmed's wise observations and reflections, documented in prose and photographs, and it has powerful implications for all of us.

I must put my cards on the table: Akbar is my friend and colleague. I was a skeptic when I first heard him in 2001, but I found the potency, eloquence and courage of his message irresistible, a vital counterpoint to the drumbeat of clash and turmoil. His central point is that civil dialogue, aimed at listening and learning -- without stifling one's own perspectives and concerns -- allows each side to understand the other, discover a common humanity, and sometimes even to develop friendships.

For Journey into Islam, Ahmed and his research team interviewed some 120 people in each of nine countries at universities, hotels and cafes, madrassahs and mosques. Ahmed had access to people that most non-Muslims would not have, including prime ministers and presidents, princes and sheikhs, but mostly ordinary Muslims. The team asked what they read, what changes they had witnessed in their communities and societies, the nature and extent of their access to technology and the news, people they regarded as role models, both contemporary and historical, and how they viewed America. The findings of his research are consistent with those of the surveys of public perceptions and opinions in Islam conducted by the Pew Global Attitudes Project and Zogby International. While his samples may be less representative of the broader populations than those of the Pew and Zogby surveys, they probe more deeply and are probably more candid. This was an exercise in dialogue as well as social science.

Ahmed reports that Muslims see themselves in a world spinning out of control, due principally to the cold forces of globalization, which brings the "poisons of greed, ignorance, and anger" into their lives. They find refuge by returning to their roots. The problem, he observes, has been exacerbated by the War on Terror, which has fueled the most revolutionary factions of Islam. Ahmed is hopeful that in time the more modern, democratic, and humanistic factions will re-emerge, and that we can accelerate such a development by returning to sanity through commitment to a more enlightened model of engagement: dialogue.

These are not the frothy slogans and dreams of a Pollyanna. Ahmed knows that some people are fanatics, beyond constructive dialogue. At the same time, as Pakistan's ambassador to Great Britain in the 1990s, he learned about changing minds and opening doors to tolerance and moderation. This book describes his extending that mission from the lofty halls of diplomacy to places where ordinary people live.

We are assaulted daily by apocalyptic images of suicide bombers acting in the name of Allah. Islam has been assaulted no less by grotesque images of Abu Ghraib and women and children killed by United States military, collateral damage inflicted in the name of freedom and democracy. Such images have become etched in the minds of the general public on each side, yet neither set bears any resemblance whatever to the lifestyles, morals and aspirations of the mainstream of either side. Ahmed's aim is to understand, chronicle, and correct these gross and toxic distortions.

Like the proverbial Persian rug, the book is not without a flaw. The absence of interviews of Persians, in fact, is a distinct flaw. More basically, anthropological research is usually plagued by questions about the representativeness of the observations, and this one is no different. While some 85% of Islam is Sunni, the countries visited were more predominantly Sunni than that, so the Shia perspective -- centered in Iran, a vast country not included in the study -- is underrepresented. Ahmed does discuss basic differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims, to be sure, but he does not probe beneath the steep ascent of Shia influence in recent years from Iran on down a crescent that runs through Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. This important development has been effectively documented by Reza Aslan and others, and the interested observer would do well to read Aslan's No god But God, too. The fundamental distortions between the perceptions and realities that Ahmed reports are bound to exist everywhere, but the differences between Sunni and Shia attitudes would be worth knowing more about, particularly given the title of his book.

Ahmed's work, in any case, with that of Aslan and others, reveals a powerful, widely overlooked truth: despite popular images to the contrary, Islam is undergoing profound reform. Muslims are seeking their religious roots for answers, but they are not hopelessly stuck in the past. The West can influence this crucial process for the better by acknowledging what is worthy about Islam and encouraging the expansion of that worthiness by showing more interest and respect. The colossal failures of hard power should make Ahmed's approach the preferred alternative for idealists and policy makers alike.

This is an important, extremely timely book. It provides an opening for those who have grown weary of TV accounts of our dire circumstances and battles lost in the war against terrorism. If you would like to learn about Islam today from a humble, learned man, a voice of reason, one who understands intimately both Islam and the West, you should read this book. You might discover that the prospects for shifting the course of the world from clash to mutual understanding and respect are real, and in our hands.

Compelling read - Great job by Dr. Ahmed
By VJ
This is book is the result of a tedious journey undertaken by Dr.Ahmed's team to get a pulse of the current Muslim reaction to globalization.
The author discusses the elements that contitute Muslim culture, tradition and pride. And then goes on to discuss how those elements have been impacted by the current crisis of globalization.

Once we understand the muslim culture and the way they think, we begin to understand why they act the way they do. Their actions have been mostly shaped by US foreign policies towards their country. The US policies shaped by the thoughts of neocons and other opportunists has led to the current state of affairs. The worst part is that it doesnt seem to be getting any better.

The book highlights the changes that could be adopted by the US government to ease tension with the middle-east. Surprsingly all that we need to do is to extend a hand of support and not be judgemental; that we be willing to keep our minds open to their cultural ideas and their way of life. It was interesting to see the author quote some of America's founding fathers and deriving inspiration from that. He is not biased in his views either. The mistakes made by the muslim nations have also been pointed out. This unbiased analysis of the situation makes for a very interesting read.

"Anything started in anger ends in shame" quotes the author. He stresses the need for all of us to shed our anger and misconception and the start process of dialogue with muslim countries so that we may all be spared of the bloody fights.
A very interesting read that I will recommend for anyone wishing to know to the other side of the story. The American media has been portraying the whole situation exactly the way politicians want it to be seen.
Anyone wishing peace and quite in the world will love this book and its ideas. Kudos to the author.

Excellent Journey into the Minds of Muslims around the World
By gzl5ry
The book Journey Into Islam centers around the travels of Akbar Ahmed and several of his graduate students as they traveled through the "Muslim World" in 2006 interviewing different Muslims about various topics such as their role models, their beliefs about Islam and globalization, their views toward America and the West, and so on. I will put the link to Ahmed's Wikipedia page at the bottom for those who desire to learn more about Ahmed's impressive pedigree.

The main thesis of Ahmed's book is that the Muslim world is facing the onslaught of globalization in a way that much of it is unprepared for and that in turn this is causing great consternation. Most of the book revolves around this theme and Ahmed's classification of three major responses/reactions toward this clash of cultural, religious, and economic values. The models Ahmed proposes are named after three cities within India where each response is centered; Deoband (Orthodox ), Aligarh (Modernist), and Ajmer (Mystical).

In this survey of Muslim views and opinions Ahmed and his graduate researchers travel to these three cities for a firsthand account of their overarching ideologies. What surprised me most in this part of the book were the reactions of those in the three cities toward Ahmed and his students. I don't want to spoil too much but the reaction of the Sufis in Ajmer was fairly predictable; they were inclusive of Ahmed and his students. But surprisingly so were the Orthodox Professors and students in Deoband. The Deobandis were not the stereotypical anti-Westerners that some might expect. The most surprising reception though was in Aligarh where the researchers expected to find modern thinking, progressive university students and professors seeking to integrate modernity and Islam; instead they found many frustrated students including some very vocal, angry students. To understand why the researchers found what they did and what Ahmed thinks about each model (its strengths and weaknesses) you will need to read the book.

As the researchers continue on through other parts of the Muslim world (they visited 7 additional countries) they talked to everyone who would talk with them including politicians and religious figures to the everyday citizenry. There is a nice summary of how the survey responses they gathered broke down in an appendix. The results of the surveys are also discusses interspersed through the book.

In the chapter titled Who Is Defining Islam After 9/11 and Why? Ahmed expands beyond his three model view and discusses how the media in the West and Western political scientists are defining Islam. One highlight in this chapter is his telling of a lecture he gave speaking before men like Dick Cheney, Henry Kissinger, Bernard Lewis, and Francis Fukuyama; he was the only Muslim speaker that night! Needless to say, he was very nervous. Also in this section Ahmed does a pretty thorough slamming of the decision to invade Iraq. While there are certainly those who would disagree with Ahmed's view that it was a bad decision I think it is worth reading anyways (if you disagree with him). He makes very good points about it and the way the Muslim world viewed the invasion (and is still viewing it in hindsight). Unfortunately this book was published before the major turnaround in Iraq as I would like to know how different the opinions of those surveyed might be now. Nonetheless the chapter is full of interesting points about media coverage and political ideology.

One other chapter merits specific mention. The third chapter is titled Women, Tribes, and Honor and in it Ahmed discusses Islam and tribalism. The chapter is quite through and really drives home the point of how many Muslims who have never had to interact with other cultures with different values are struggling with globalization. Ahmed does not shy away from the sometimes barbaric acts of these tribes and he discusses them frankly, including their treatment of women. If the entire rest of the book stunk I would still recommend people read this chapter.

So, overall I think what I came away with from this book is that Islam is not monolithic. There is a wide range of beliefs and opinions throughout the Muslim world. I certainly thought that some of the views expressed were misguided but I could also appreciate many of what the interviewees had to say, especially many of their concerns. I found Ahmed fair and pretty straightforward. I think most reading the book will pick up pretty quick that Ahmed is a huge fan of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In part of the book Ahmed even revisits his own spiritual journey as a young administrator in the newly formed Pakistan and a stringent follower of the Aligarh model to his introduction via his dad to the Ajmer model and his embracing of the inclusive spirit of the Sufis.

I think this book is worth reading. I think it is important to understand how Muslims think and what they think about given much of the unreliable reporting occurring today. I won't promise that you will come away satisfied with every attitude expressed. I disagreed heavily with what some people in the book had to say. But, I also gained a new perspective on how others in the world think and I guarantee you will too if you read Journey Into Islam.

Laura Ingalls Wilder, Farm Journalist: Writings from the Ozarks, by Laura Ingalls Wilder

Before Laura Ingalls Wilder found fame with her Little House books, she made a name for herself with short nonfiction pieces in magazines and newspapers. Read today, these pieces offer insight into her development as a writer and depict farm life in the Ozarks—and also show us a different Laura Ingalls Wilder from the woman we have come to know.

This volume collects essays by Wilder that originally appeared in the Missouri Ruralist between 1911 and 1924. Building on the initial compilation of these articles under the title Little House in the Ozarks, this revised edition marks a more comprehensive collection by adding forty-two additional Ruralist articles and restoring passages previously omitted from other articles.

Writing as “Mrs. A. J. Wilder” about modern life in the early twentieth-century Ozarks, Laura lends her advice to women of her generation on such timeless issues as how to be an equal partner with their husbands, how to support the new freedoms they’d won with the right to vote, and how to maintain important family values in their changing world. Yet she also discusses such practical matters as how to raise chickens, save time on household tasks, and set aside time to relax now and then.

New articles in this edition include “Making the Best of Things,” “Economy in Egg Production,” and “Spic, Span, and Beauty.” “Magic in Plain Foods” reflects her cosmopolitanism and willingness to take advantage of new technologies, while “San Marino Is Small but Mighty” reveals her social-political philosophy and her interest in cooperation and community as well as in individualism and freedom. Mrs. Wilder was firmly committed to living in the present while finding much strength in the values of her past.

A substantial introduction by Stephen W. Hines places the essays in their biographical and historical context, showing how these pieces present Wilder’s unique perspective on life and politics during the World War I era while commenting on the challenges of surviving and thriving in the rustic Ozark hill country. The former little girl from the little house was entering a new world and wrestling with such issues as motor cars and new “labor-saving” devices, but she still knew how to build a model small farm and how to get the most out of a dollar.

Together, these essays lend more insight into Wilder than do even her novels and show that, while technology may have improved since she wrote them, the key to the good life hasn’t changed much in almost a century. Laura Ingalls Wilder, Farm Journalist distills the essence of her pioneer heritage and will delight fans of her later work as it sheds new light on a vanished era.

Midwest history buffs will snatch up this collection of short essays from Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957), creator of the "Little House on the Prairie" series, originally published in the Missouri Ruralist between 1911 and 1924. Written in a homey, chatty style, Wilder's essays cover a wide array of topics, including the 1915 San Francisco Exhibition, where Wilder discovered foreign delicacies like German Honey Cake, as well as the changing roles of women at the beginning of the 20th century. In "Who'll Do the Woman's Work?" Ingalls writes that, since the war made it necessary for women to take up "male" jobs, "Never again will anyone have the courage to say that women could not run world affairs if necessary." Many columns feature simple advice for saving a few cents at a time, as well as the importance of cultivating readiness and counting one's blessings; given her often wistful tone, what Wilder does not say may be as telling as what she does. Those expecting sweet, "Little House" style family stories may be disappointed, but patient readers will discover a time and place chronicled with honesty and curiosity by a woman who was both ahead of her times and firmly rooted in the traditions of Midwest farm life.

Delightful reading for historians, fans of Little House, farmers, kids
By wisdomofthepages.com
I cannot help but pour forth great excitement and delight in a book I just picked up titled Laura Ingalls Wilder: Farm Journalist, edited by Stephen Hines. Any American worth their salt knows Wilder as the author of the "Little House" books. I myself cut my book-reading teeth devouring these books time and time again, always dreaming of being a modern-day pioneer homesteader.

Before book-writing fame came to Wilder, she was known through the state of Missouri as a popular columnist in the Missouri Ruralist from 1911 to 1923. This book gathers nearly two hundred of these essays together for our profit. Ingalls wrote about home, agriculture, thrift, parenting, women's roles, etc., and gave readers an endless supply of pithy advice and personal anecdotes. She was Erma Bombeck, Will Rogers, Samuel Clemens, and Ben Franklin all rolled into one.

Ingalls' eyes were wide open to the advancements of the future, all the while seeking to keep her hands on the best of the "old ways". For example, in a clip called "Let's Revive the Old Amusements", she writes:
"Sometimes I wonder if telephones and motor cars are altogether blessings for country people. When my neighbor can call me up for a short visit over the phone, she is not so likely to make the necessary effort to come and spend the afternoon, and I get hungry for the sight of her face as well as the sound of her voice."

However, Ingalls was not a sentimentalist in regard to the past. She says:
"Love and service, with a belief in the future and expectation of better things in the tomorrow of the world is a good working philosophy; much better than, `in olden times-things were so much better when I was young.' For there is no turning back nor standing still; we must go forward, into the future, generation after generation toward the accomplishment of the ends that have been set for the human race."

Historians, fans of Little House, farmers, and children will all enjoy this book.

A singularly wonderful portrait of a beloved woman's wisdom
By Midwest Book Review
Laura Ingalls Wilder: Farm Journalist is a collection of nonfiction essays written by the famous author of the "Little House " books for The Missouri Ruralist between 1911 and 1924. Complementing and extending the earlier collection of articles titled Little House in the Ozarks, this edition includes an additional forty -two articles and additional material omitted from the earlier collection. Laura wrote her articles addressed to contemporary farm women, making many philosophical and practical suggestions and observations pertinent to their daily life experiences. Her presence as an author is unmistakable. Much of the information pertaining to her years of experience as a Missouri farm wife finds roots in her pioneer history. Her values emerge clear and solid from the minutiae of daily chore lists and how-to suggestions. Her refreshing voice lends its clarity across the generations of technological advancement and finds its niche comfortably. This is a carefully edited collection that will appeal to lovers of the "Little House" books and American turn -of -the- century history too. The skillful adaptation to changing social and political environments while nurturing a stable base of beliefs and values is unique to this beloved author. Highly recommended reading for adults.

A tapestry of rural life, farm society and home-spun storytelling.
By Runa Annwn
I'm loving it. I'm about half way through it. I read 5 or six books intermittently, so haven't finished it yet, but so far I have found this to be an educational, warm and inviting read. There is something about reading how things were and comparing how they are now that I find enlightening. Some things never change, but some of the best things actually have gone out of style I think. A tapestry of rural life, farm society and home-spun storytelling. A nice insight into the mind of one of my favorite storytellers. I'm a sucker for nostalgia and self-sufficient lifestyles.

Timothy's Game (The Timothy Cone Series Book 2), by Lawrence Sanders

Wall Street private investigator Timothy Cone is back in this trio of novellas that plunge into the high-stakes worlds of insider trading, corporate espionage, and cold-blooded murder
Timothy Cone works for an agency that provides “financial intelligence”—and often investigates murder and mayhem, too. In “Run, Sally, Run!,” Timothy Cone investigates insider leaks in a New York investment banking house, and faces the ruthless Sally Steiner, who’s willing to do anything to succeed in a man’s world. “A Case of the Shorts” opens with a bang: The CEO of a powerful Wall Street firm is gunned down in his limo. Cone is dispatched, ostensibly to uncover evidence of industrial sabotage. But what he finds is a simmering hornet’s nest of greed, passion, and betrayal. A Chinese food corporation on the New York Stock Exchange raises red flags in “One From Column A.” When the elderly CEO of White Lotus employs Cone’s company to investigate, Cone is soon tangling with kidnapping, extortion, and the Asian mafia, and it’s hard to tell who’s scamming whom.

From Publishers Weekly
Timothy Cone, Sanders's shabbily dressed, tough-talking, razor-witted Wall Street dick, is back at his special game in three dazzlingly plotted stories that might have been subtitled (to borrow the words of Cone's feisty girlfriend and boss): "The things people will do for the almighty buck." Among the colorful players, , there's the resilient daughter of a gangster who not only knows how to combine insider trading with running her late father's garbage disposal business, but who, with Cone's help, learns how to keep the business out of the grasping hands of mobsters and stay alive; the financial tycoon so universally hated it takes a Cone to pick the person who really "offed" him from among all those who wanted to; and the case of the mysterious rise in the stock of a Chinese food company, the investigation of which puts Cone in the crossfire of murderous Chinese gangs. What Sanders (The Anderson Tapes, The Fourth Deadly Sin, The Timothy Files) doesn't know about insider trading, crooked takeover bids, blackmail, greenmail and the way cops and racketeers think and talk is nobody's business. And he knows quite a bit about human psychology, too. Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club and Mystery Guild alternates.

From Library Journal
Veteran but unpredictable Sanders lands in the middle somewhere with this not-too-sleazy, not-too-riveting sequel to the Timothy Files. Financial investigator Timothy Cone works on the cases comprising the book's three sections. In each, Cone uncovers the motives behind various stock manipulations and turns the dirty work over to the authorities, who take the credit. While Sanders employs an annoying present tense and brash, raw style, Cone and cohorts Samantha and cat Cleo provide an interesting bridge. Literary Guild alternate; Mystery Guild alternate. REK

Timothy Redux
By lee freke
Our eponymous hero returns in this second installment of the Timothy Series.

In the first novella, Run, Sally, Run, Timothy Cone has been specifically recommended to determine where leaks in a company, Pistol and Burns, are coming from. A Case of the Shorts begins with the assassination of John Dempster, CEO of Dempster-Torrey. Haldering and Co. is retained, and Timothy is drafted to investigate why the company is a target for industrial sabotage. In the last novella, One From Column A, Chin Tung Lee, of the White Lotus label, assigns the investigative team to discover why anyone would speculate in such a conservative company. Oedipal lust to unbridled greed actuated by hatred are just a little of what we see in The Game.

As usual, Timothy Cone cracks the cases with confidence and exaggerated bravado, leveraging on the knowledge of financial specialists, and his bevy of police informants. The whole cast from the Files are back, with some chaps added to compensate for the diversity of the new clientele.

Most Sanders fans when reading about this shabby detective are apt to compare him unfavorably to the dapper McNally. They might just be mistaken. Actually, both characters do have their similarities: their snitches in the police department who believe in quid pro quo, their emphasis on appearances and location, as well as their queer relationships, and controlled humor.

Yet Cone has his strengths. Here, the bad guys are unafraid to get their hands dirty; also, as each client is referred to Haldering and Co., there is a certain a continuity along stories. Moreover, since the focus is on financial institutions, a virgin forest in investigative fiction, we get to read a lot about the unheralded SEC.

In Timothy's Game, Lawrence Sanders delivers sizzling stuff that should be enjoyed in it's own right.

A three story collection about a Wall Street investigator
By Fred Camfield
This book is actually a collection of three stories about Wall Street investigator Timothy Cone. Originally issued in 1988, it was written when Lawrence Sanders was at the peak of his writing career (before he started insulting his fans by cranking out pot boilers). The stories concern various intrigues on Wall Street - insider trading, stock manipulation and short selling, and corporate takeovers and greenmail. The plots are well developed and well written, and the characters are interesting.

Lawrence Sanders Revisited
By Tom Sinyard
Most of you may not have even heard of this author, much less read his books. If you like a good story line combined with beautifully drawn and repeated visits with characters, you owe it to your self to discover Sanders. Years ago, I read most, but not all, of his series. I'm on a mission to re read them all. Making progress: I've re read ten of his books including Timothy Files series. I suggest that you start with the first of the series, ( The Timothy Cone Series) to get introduced to Cone and friends, then graduate to "Timothy 's Game" for more of his adventures. I predict you'll get addicted, so be careful.

BTW, It's difficult to find his books in brick & mortar stores. Kindle has them all. A side benefit for those seeking to improve their vocabulary with often obscure words and phrases: The Kindle dictionary will have you stopping at least every few pages to check your understanding of Sander's descriptions One never knows when an ancient mid English phase will come in handy..

Bingo’s ultimate guide to finding love might need a few more chapters when his long-distance girlfriend returns home
Bingo Brown is confident that he can write the definitive guidebook for middle-school boys trying to win over girls. With his baby brother, Jamie, in mind, he jots down notes about the lessons he’s learned: Should you worry if the girl you like grows taller than you? (No.) What do you do when hauling your family’s dirty clothes to the laundromat? (Go the back way.) But when Bingo’s girlfriend, Melissa, moves back to town and doesn’t want to talk to him, he realizes he still has some learning to do. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Betsy Byars including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of Bingo's previous books will wish things went better for him here. The story opens with the unexpected sighting of his long-lost heartthrob, Melissa, and closes with the sad revelation that Melissa is not, as hoped, back in town for good. In between Bingo tries, mostly in vain, to connect with his inamorata (Is she really returning? Does the Xeroxed love letter Bingo inadvertently sent her still rankle?), penning his efforts in a missive intended one day to spare his kid brother some of love's agonies. Recorded with brutal honesty, Bingo's near misses comprise an engaging narrative that is, in typical Bingo fashion, poignant and hilarious by turns. His relations with his family members, especially his brother and his father (who is suffering his own disappointments) are tender in their own right. Perhaps because the novel contains so many missed connections, however, Melissa's character remains largely enigmatic, and the plot never coalesces. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-- Bingo Brown is back in this fourth hilarious yet poignant account of life on an adolescent roller coaster. He begins his definitive ``Guide to Romance'' as a legacy for baby brother, Jamie, just as a new romantic disaster occurs. Melissa, the love of his life and the only girl to smell of gingersnaps, returns to town unexpectedly. Bingo, as usual, is a likable, bright, wry character stumbling towards maturity. The short chapters, comic style, and immediacy of his thoughts and feelings add to the appeal. While this volume stands solidly alone, Bingo's fans will applaud his return--and hope that the saga continues. --Connie Tyrrell Burns, Mahoney Middle School, South Portland, ME

From Kirkus Reviews
In a fourth delightful book about a young hero who still anticipates ``mixed sex conversations'' with tongue-tied trepidation, Bingo, now in junior high, has a rocky reunion with former classmate and sometime pen pal Melissa. Byars spins a witty web of dialogue here, airily supported by the insubstantial events; it takes pages for Bingo to catch wind of Melissa's reappearance and alternately stalk and hide from her in a grocery and around the neighborhood, with his mother as unwilling but amused accomplice (Dare he speak? Is it really Melissa? Is she now taller than he is?); it takes chapters until they meet; and it takes the whole book before they really talk. Meanwhile, Dad goes into a depression when his first novel gets a rejection; sidekick Billy Wentworth (who's turning out to be a Bogart-style rough diamond) gruffly keeps Bingo on track; and Bingo himself, still ingenuously self-absorbed, verbalizes each experience as a future guide for baby brother Jamie (see title). There are some nifty Byars touches here--e.g., Bingo can't finish The Red Badge of Courage on schedule because he's so poignantly in tune with each sentence that he has to stop to ponder it (he's lucky enough to have a teacher who understands)- -and a few serious undertones, but the focus is on the comical interaction and the sympathetic, on-target depiction of a nice, bright, romantic preadolescent with a quirky, affectionate family and an endlessly inquisitive mind. A gossamer tour de force. (Fiction. 9-13) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Suprise Visit
By A Customer
I really like the book Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance. The book is about Bingo's love Melissa. Melissa lives in Bixiby, Oklahoma far away from Bingo. Bingo has decided to write a book called Bingo Brown's Guide to Romance which he has decided to dedicate to his baby brother, Jamie. Bingo writes in the book mostly every day but usually has nothing much to write about until one day, he sees Melissa at the grocery store. Amazed, Bingo's first questions are, why didn't she tell me she was coming? And, is that really Melissa? Because to Bingo she seems much bigger. When Bingo knows that it really is Melissa and he sees her, he doesn't know what to say. Why didn't she tell me she was coming, he always wonders. This book is so good that you won't want it to end, my friends that have read it say. I agree.

Bingo is so funny and sweet, I just love him.
By E. S. Anderson
Bingo is so funny and sweet, I just love him. I fell in love with him when we were both twelve, but now that I'm 31 and he's still twelve, it's a little creepy. Good thing he's fictional.
Bingo is beginning to write a Guide to Romance so that his new brother Jamie can benefit from Bingo's experience when Jamie is old enough to "ride the roller coaster of life." Bingo knows quite a lot about romance, as he's been carrying on with Melissa for three books now, and some of the time it was even a Long Distance relationship filled with letters and expensive phone calls. Bingo is in for some unexpected surprises when Melissa shows up back in town.
If you know any twelve year olds, you should give them this book.

... wish the guys in my class had vocabularies as beautiful as Bingo's
By Julia N
I wish the guys in my class had vocabularies as beautiful as Bingo's.

Thank you, NetGalley and Open Road Integrated Media, for this free book to review!

How old is Bingo? This is the only book in the series that I've read. He sounds like a genius. Hence, Bingo is quite the likable protagonist. ;)

The ending was too swift for me. I expected there to be a final dramatic turn, but that might have been because there were ten to twenty pages left. Turns out, though, that those pages were about the author.

This book was hilarious and I would totally recommend it to tween guys going through crushes of their own.
