The Definitive Guide to Schubert's Masterpiece

Susan Youens follows her excellent analyses of Schubert's lieder -- among the highlights of her work are books on "Die schoene Muellerin" in the Cambridge Music series and "Schubert's Poets and the Making of Lieder" -- with a complete analysis of *the* major song cycle, Winterreise. In this book, which is aimed at the knowledgeable layperson but which will not disappoint specialists in either poetry or musicology, Youens first deconstructs the cycle as a whole, looking at the poet, Wilhelm Mueller, and the sources of his texts; as well as giving a "macro" look at Schubert's setting of it. This first section would have been excellent enough. But then Youens analyzes each song, in both music and poetry. She finds links between the songs, helps guide the narrative, and, on nearly every page, points out features that can't help but inform anyone's understanding of this touchstone of Western culture.

Youens includes the first page of the score of every song, as well as the German text -- with the occasional changes by Schubert carefully noted and explained -- and the translation into English. Even if you don't speak German, I'd highly recommend reading Mueller's text while you recall the melody of the song. It really gives an appreciation of the art not just of Schubert but of Mueller as well, who Youens argues is unjustly viewed as a minor German poet these days. Her appreciation of Mueller made a believer out of me.

Five stars for this educational, well-written book that gave me a completely new view of a cycle I've listened to hundreds of times.

Very technical, very deep analysis, not for general reader

Even lovers of "Winterreise" who are quite obsessed by this cycle of 24 poems set to music by Schubert may find this guide heavy going. The author does an admirable job of describing the poems and explaining the background of how the song cycle came to be written. She then goes bar by bar almost through each of the 24 songs, examining how specific words are set to music, the many key changes, the amendments that the composer made and every other detail you may wish to know.

A score of the piece is definitely required to follow the argument.

This book really doesn't work well on the Kindle. It's awkward to page back to reread things that are relevant from previous chapters and the score extracts don't show up well.

This book is recommended for professional musicians, music majors and specialists in German poetry - in the paper version. It's not for the general reader or amateur lover of Schubert.

I came to this excellent book by Jouens via a similar one by Bostridge. I am fond of both. It is rare that a theme attracts two writers at about the same time, leading to a competition for the title of definitive work on a subject. I can presently not give a clear preference.
Both books deal in their independent ways with Schubert’s Winterreise, a compendium of 24 songs amongst his last, arguably the world finest. They are bleak and austere passages of a wanderer, theatrical and melodious, speaking of lost love. Schubert, the composer who died with 31 in Vienna, considered Winterreise his best work.
Susan Jouens' is the more poetical one, Bostridge’s the one more speaking of his experience as a singer.
Jouens positively re-evaluates the poet Mueller, as of considerable depth, hiding under a veneer of folk simplicity. She is interpreting Mueller's various images with a skill born of wide knowledge of the poet's other works.
I recommend to luxuriate in both books and savor their differences. Rarely does one have opportunity to let oneself be pampered by such a fine competition.

Margulies's plays explore individuals' needs to be part of a group, usually a family, a religion, or both. Sometimes these are bitingly funny, as in the parodical Loman Family Picnic, about a young man who escapes his unhappy family life by imagining a musical of Death of a Salesman. Sometimes the plays are surreal, as in the Twilight Zonish What's Wrong With This Picture? about a dead wife and mother who is resurrected by her family's intense need--and then must convince them to let her rest in peace. The best in this collection is the title play. An artist finds himself in a crisis of identity when a German TV interviewer starts probing him about the supposed "Jewish" elements in his work. This volume, which also includes Found a Peanut and The Model Apartment, covers the upward curve of Margulies's career from the journeyman stage through off-Broadway successes to his first Broadway play.

Donald Margulies's other plays include "Collected Stories", "The Loman Family Picnic", "Sight Unseen" and "Dinner with Friends", for which he was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Collection by one of America's best contemporary playwrights

Donald Margulies is one of the best playwrights currently at work in the American theater. His view of, particularly, middle class family life is elevated above the ordinary by Margulies' ability to observe his characters' struggles with the sharpest of eyes, while making his audience see and sympathize with the different points of view. His plays exploring the life of the artist also resonate. Margulies' earlier plays play with surrealism and comedy, while in the more recent plays he has used his knack for shuffling time and place to illuminate what appear to be ordinary lives. The Model Apartment is a remarkable play that dares to explore the fallout of the Holocaust through a lens of comedy, with powerful results. I look forward to a next volume of collected works of this extraordinary playwright.

In this riveting thriller, the first of a planned trilogy, James (Story) introduces FBI agent Patrick Bowers. His professional specialty is environmental criminology, which attempts to track lawbreakers by analyzing the significance of the time and place at which the crime occurred. When corpses of young women start turning up near Asheville, N.C., Bowers is called in. The killer's MO is to tie a yellow ribbon in his victims' hair and leave a chess piece somewhere on the scene. Bowers begins to suspect that the governor of North Carolina, rumored to be the next Republican presidential contender, is somehow connected to the murders, and that a cult with links to Jonestown might also be involved. Making matters trickier, the special agent supervising Bowers turns out to be a longtime colleague with whom Bowers has some bad blood. Bowers, a recent widower with a surly teenage stepdaughter to raise, tries to keep his grief and parental confusion at bay so that he can focus on the case as the killer targets more innocent women. This was my first novel. I'd been writing non-fiction books and wanted to write a mystery or suspense novel. So my publisher asked me to send in fifty pages. They offered me a three-book deal and the Bowers Files began.
I'd originally intended to write a story about a one-armed detective and a guy who snuck into cult compounds to free people for their family members. Neither of those storylines worked.
However, all of the research that I did on cults led me to the Jonestown storyline in The Pawn. While researching the book, I was able to interview one of the three people still alive who had survived the Jonestown massacre. The book is dedicated to his wife and his son, who both died on that tragic day.
People often tell me that the opening scene to this book is one of the most visceral and shocking scenes in all of the Bowers Files. The final twist only came to me after many months of working on the book.

This Guy Makes Me Mad

Yeah, you read that right...Steven James really makes me mad. I'll tell you why in a moment, but this is a review of his novel and I'll start with that.

On the surface, "The Pawn" looks to be yet another in a long, somewhat wearying string of serial killer novels. I mean, how many more of these can we read before the genre dies? Pun intended. The reason the genre remains strong, however, is because of well-crafted thrillers such as this, ones that include believable characters and original villains. In fact, I suggest that "The Pawn" elevates and transcends its market niche.

The book's protagonist, Patrick Bowers, is struggling to understand his wife's death from cancer and the resulting estrangement from his step-daughter. He doesn't have much time for such things, though, while trying to track down a ruthless and brilliant games-man, a killer who leaves chess pieces at the site of each murder. These are workable elements for any such novel, yet nothing that new to the market; it's the manner in which James ties them together with larger conspiracy theories and historical mysteries that turns this into a true page-turner. Not only do we care about this killer being stopped, we care about Bowers and his relationships. We care about the future victims. We care about others caught up in the dizzying maze of deception.

So why am I mad? Well, as a published novelist myself, I often wrestle with my own inner editor while reading other novels. This makes it hard to enjoy some of them. In the case of James, I found myself challenged instead to sharpen my craft even more. Not only that, he combines in "The Pawn" some of the elements that it's taken me two or three books to explore--a love of coffee, an eye for chess, and an interest in history. In fact, I've had some readers doubt the history in my novels, and I've told them to go read the facts. I thought, in the case of Mr. James, maybe I'd catch him sleeping on the research, but no...I looked up his underlying historical premise--and it's right on target. Wow! In his debut thriller, he's trumped my books and raised the bar.

Yeah, that really torques me! And I can't wait to read his next, "The Rook."

The Pawn, a thriller written by Steven James, is at once a book that you want to stop reading so you don't have nightmares, but one you don't want to put down either.

Thriller readers familiar with James Patterson's "Alex Cross" series will find themselves thinking of Alex Cross and his Washington D.C. home, but Special Agent Patrick Bowers is a strong character in his own domain: North Carolina. Further, his specialty in environmental criminology is apt considering the newsworthiness of environmental issues in the present time.

Further complicating Bowers's work is high powered political figures, such as North Carolina's governors and higher ranking bureau officials, including his supervisor. We hear news stories often where police officials are criticized for not doing their job and then when the story comes out, it turns out their ability to do this work is being blocked by other parties. This is very much the case in this story, leading a real world feel to this work of fiction.

Although there are numerous characters that appear in the story, it isn't a challenge to keep them straight, and some such as Tessa, you can't help but grow attached to. Another testament to the author's abilities, the characters come to life and the reader almost expects to meet them when they go to town.

The author's background in storytelling, in which he received his MA from East Tennessee State University, shows clearly throughout the book, allowing the reader to feel as if they are hearing a personal account of the tale. Further, he uses simple words, such as `pawn' with multiple meanings and to keep the readers thinking. In a manner similar to John Grisham writing about the Delta locations he knows best, Steven James brings North Carolina to life in readers' eyes.

This is the first of a planned trilogy, and I look forward to reading more of Patrick Bowers's cases and Steven James's work.

This is a writer to watch for big things to happen

Steven James takes us into the world of FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers in this exceptional psychological thriller. A serial killer is at large in the Appalachian area of North Carolina, and Bowers, known for his expertise in environmental criminology, is called in to help make sense of this baffling case.

The killer has dubbed himself "The Illusionist," thriving on misdirection and confusion to further confound the authorities at every turn. As Bowers and his team search for clues, they realize they are facing a madman who is as cunning as he is evil. As answers are uncovered, more mysteries surface, linking the Illusionist to a charismatic cult leader with ties to the infamous Jonestown cult. Patrick Bowers now faces seemingly insurmountable odds as the case becomes larger and more dangerous than anyone ever anticipated.

Steven James writes at a break-neck pace, effortlessly pulling the reader along on this incredible thrill ride. With the backdrop of the Jonestown disaster, James has added a clever dose of history that brings a sense of relevancy to the story. The plot twists and turns while never hinting at the destination, and the characters are rich and absorbing. Patrick Bowers is an intriguing hero who is extremely brilliant, yet very fallible. While he excels in his professional career, his personal life is in shambles, and his struggles in parenthood are real and pertinent.

While The Pawn holds its own both as mystery and a suspenseful thriller, the strength of the novel is found Patrick Bowers' spiritual journey. As Bowers is drawn closer to danger, he finds that he must also face his difficult past and come to grips with some hard, yet hopeful truths about life and death. In the end, James leaves us enough to satisfy and whets our appetite for more. With this first installment of The Bowers Files, Steven James has left his mark as a writer to watch for.

Good...but with some issues

So I got this book and the companion devotion book before leaving for college. I really enjoyed most of it. It was filled with good advice and Biblical teaching that will help any woman who is wanting to become a better "God Girl." However, I had a few issues with some of the author's advice. In the second chapter, the author talks about how a God Girl should act around boys. I agree with her saying that girls should pursue God more than boys and make Him their priority. However, I disagree with her on how a girl should act with boys. She states that girls should not be competitive with boys or try to be one of the guys. The author anticipates arguments and says that ya, girls can be one of the guys, "But when they do they lose their charm and the mystery that God wants them to have."(36) Now, as a tomboy who competes with her many guy friends, I may be a little biased here, but where in the Bible does it say that women have to be charming and mysterious to get a boy to like them. In fact, Proverbs 31:30a says, "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting." So that leaves me with mystery--I cannot find a single reference to a woman being mysterious in the Bible. So, without Biblical facts, I relegate the mystery portion to author's opinion. My next problem came from chapter 4. This one is more a difference of opinion but I believe I have a valid point. The author advocates listening to our friends and going to God alone with all our problems and not our friends. Well, I agree that we should go to God with our problems. But, often we can go to trustworthy Christian friends with our situations and receive good advice from them. Also, friendships should be equal. Each friend should listen to the other. The key with this is knowing who to talk to and what to say. My final disagreement is with the author's take on shyness in chapter 5. She says that we have a command to help others and that being to shy to do so is a sin. God gave each of us different gifts and abilities. I think the author neglects to think of ways a shy person make work behind the scenes to help others. Just because some people do not boldly love others noticeably doesn't mean they aren't loving them in some other way. Well, despite the fact that I picked apart these few issues, overall I think that this is a good inspirational book for women and girls of any age.

Love this book!

My 11 year old daughter and I are reading this book together. As this is her first year in a public middle school, she notices many changes: friends, boys, body image, etc. I was not raised in a Christian home, so I did not know how to approach this season of my daughter's life through God's teachings. My daughter found this book at the Focus on the Family bookstore in Colorado Springs, CO. We began reading, wow, it's great! She stays completely focused on the Chapters and we often stop and discuss topics the author writes about: how boys see dating & girls that pursue boys, friends & how to deal with frenemies...
I am learning a lot too! While reading I often think, "I wish I'd known this when I was a teenager!"
I highly recommend this book for all women. It's been a very positive springboard to personal and sometimes embarrassing questions my daughter wants to ask me. This book makes the tuff question/answers easy. Bible verses are provided too!

Awesome book!

This book was written for me. It is good to know there are other women out there with the same issues. Hayley gets right to the point with examples and real life experiences. There is scripture to back up her statements and beliefs. It is an eye opener. I'm trying to get my SS class to use it as a study guide one day.

About the Author
LYNN HEITRITTER, RN, PhD, has been a faculty associate in Marriage and Family Studies at Bethel Theological Seminary and was the founder and former director of BECOMERS Sexual Abuse Support Group Program. Lynn and her husband divide their time between South Africa and Minnesota.

JEANETTE VOUGHT, PhD, is the executive director and founder of Christian Recovery Center. She is a licensed psychologist, licensed marriage and family therapist, a licensed social worker, and a certified criminal justice specialist. She and her husband make their home in Minnesota.

To Our Readers

Sexual abuse is not only prevalent in society at large but is occurring within the church as well. Sixteen years ago we began the introduction to the first edition of this book by stating that we recognized a need to inform the church about sexual abuse. As well, we wanted to provide specific materials that would enable people within the church to develop effective ministry to adults who had experienced sexual abuse as children. Over the years, while many have been helped, many continue to bear scars of childhood abuse and desperately struggle with hidden trauma that interferes with spiritual growth and relationships with others. The revised edition builds on our earlier vision of equipping members of the body of Christ to promote healing and restoration of women and men who have been victims of sexual abuse.

Our purpose is fourfold. First, we hope to provide Christian counselors, clergy, support group leaders, and those involved in ministries of care with increased understanding of the experience of childhood sexual abuse victims and to provide resources that can be used as tools in the recovery process of adult survivors and those who love them. Second, we want to help adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse to identify areas of damage resulting from sexual abuse, to feel strengthened as they participate in their individual journeys of recovery, and to be encouraged that many adult survivors have experienced restoration and are living satisfying and successful lives. Third, we wish to help friends, relatives, and spouses in their efforts to be supportive to loved ones who have been victims of sexual abuse. Fourth, we offer current perspectives about ministry to adult survivors of sexual abuse over the past two decades.

The book is divided into five sections, each with a particular focus.

Section One acquaints the reader with sexual abuse as seen through the eyes of children, including life histories of adult survivors sharing some of the trauma of their childhood experiences. Special attention is given to the effects of abuse from childhood, through adolescence, and into adulthood. This section describes physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual damage of sexual abuse.

Section Two gives an overview of sexual abuse within the family, with guidelines for intervention in incest within families.

Section Three offers insight into some of the spiritual and psychological influences affecting sexual abuse offenders. A description of different types of offenders is presented with treatment issues that need to be addressed.

Section Four presents the BECOMERS Sexual Abuse support group recovery program, including teaching materials, illustrations, and individual homework exercises.

Section Five offers a reflection of Second Thoughts from the authors. Nearly two decades ago, we collaborated on research and preparation for writing Helping Victims of Sexual Abuse. At the present time, we write a new chapter from our individual perspectives to share with our readers ways in which God has shaped parallel ministry paths since the first edition of the book.

To the fullest extent of our knowledge, we have given credit to all the authors and other sources of materials that have been used in our research and writing. We appreciate each of these contributions to our work.

With the first edition of this book, we wrote to share our deep concern for adult victims who needed acknowledgment of the truth of their experience. Our continued prayer is that God might use this revised edition to empower the church to recognize, understand, offer hope of restoration, promote healing, and, ultimately prevent child sexual abuse.

Very Insightful

I appreciated this book for the incite it can give to a skilled helper. It helped me see into the world of someone who has suffered from sexual abuse even though I myslef have never been. The authors did an outstanding job at peering into the images and messages that are acquired as a result of having suffered such an emotionally, and spiritually damaging act as sexual abuse. As a Christain counselor I aprreciate how the authors highlighted the truth of God's Word in setting the tone for true healing. I have used this with one client an have had great success in making them feel understood, and in helping them see hope.

Probably the best sexual abuse recovery book I've read

I've had to read more than my fair share of these books in my field of study, and many books have inflated "fear mongering" statistics and a lot of misinformation on the nature of sexual abuse based upon cultural and media bias. This book is opposite. This book very accurately describes abusers as a homogeneous group rather than the trench coat wearing dirty old man image we conjure up when we think of sex offenders. In order to prevent sexual abuse, we must recognize the reality of sexual abuse, not the myths society believes about it. The facts is, most sexual abuse occurs in the home by trusted friends or family members. Not all are pedophiles. There are a variety of reasons why people commit sex crimes. Thankfully this book recognizes this fact, unlike many other books I've read on the subject.

Another good point made by this book is understanding what it REALLY means to "forgive" the offender. It is NOT excusing, not punishing him/ her, or forgetting the pain caused. Forgiveness is about not allowing the past to dictate your life any longer.

Most importantly, recover is a PROCESS, not one single event that instantly transforms you. I think many times we base our faith on those "miracle" stories we see on TV, when the reality is most of us continue to struggle even after we are saved.

This book offers a nine-step recovery process for abuse victims, and the steps address many of the feeling abuse victims endure as a result of the abuse they suffered.

The only things I feel should be addressed in the future if they revise this book again is the impact of sex offender laws in regard to barriers to treatment. The harsh nature of many sex offender laws offer incentives for family members to keep mum about the abuse or risk losing a loved one for life.

Direct, truthful information

Excellent format (each read a chapter, discuss that chapter's questions). Direct and current language but doesn't end up trying so hard to be hip that it misses the point. Shares the truth about God's intent for the gift of sex and how to reap the full benefits of that gift.

The practical application of "how" to remain purer (thus enjoying more of the blessing)than the world would have you believe is possible, is invaluable.

Great Tool for teaching your children about their sexuality

As a youth pastor and parent of pre-teens, I have dived into this subject and find Jim Burn's book to be a great tool for a parent to read and discuss with their children. He stays grounded in the Bible, and tackles this in an age-approriate way that is culturally relevant and aware.

My husband and I read this book to our 11 and 13 year old sons. We discussed each chapter. We thought it was a very good, balanced approach at purity, gives the basic sex information, changes, puberty, std's, porn info. We liked the chapters on bouncing eyes, purity, emotions, respect towards opposite sex, etc. It is decidedly Christian, and conservative, and definitely promotes abstinence before marriage.
