Much like Julie Fogliano’s And Then It’s Spring (2012), this story is about a boy who discovers the magic of a seed when he plants it in the ground. But first it takes some sun and rain and plenty of waiting . . . and then some more waiting. Little by little, the boy notices buds and tender leaves on a sprouting tree, and a host of insects that make their home in the new growth. As the quiet story cycles through the seasons and the passing years—and the continual waiting—both the boy and tree grow bigger, until the tree is strong enough to hold the boy, and the boy holds one of the tree’s seeds, ready to start the magic again. Although the text is less inventive than Fogliano’s, the magic of this debut picture book rests in MacKay’s diorama-style illustrations. Layered cutouts made from a variety of papers, including semitranslucent Yupo paper, allow soft, warm light to filter through and create luminous, sunlit scenes. Lovely book to keep and treasure

I read this with two boys; they loved the end picture of the boy in the tree with the original boy, now a man. They picture themselves like that one day I think! A good cycle of life to look at and visualise, interesting and lovely drawings and nice animals crop up on each page. Snails, tortoises, etc. I love Elly MacKay's lightbox theatre pictures as they almost glow on the page, bringing real life to each picture. And her illustrations are charming. Funnily enough, the book will be a little like the seed, in that I think the boys will keep the book to read to their own children one day.. At least, that's the intention. I wish we could get more of her work in the UK.

Gorgeous Pictures!!

The pictures in this book are amazing. I love Ellly MacKay's work. The stories are simple but they compliment the pictures so well. Definitely consider one. You won't be disappointed.
