A Summer Sizzler
By Donald James. Parker
Julie Lessman is a master (or should I use the term mistress) of taking her readers on an emotional rollercoaster ride. Her characters, despite the fact she has so many of them involved in the story, come alive as real people and not caricatures gilded with religious veneer. The extended Connor family members are normally admirable but not flawless people. They try to cling to God, but the common struggles all humans must deal with in the areas of pride and passion never stray far from their door. The exposé of pride and its damaging effects is one of the highlights of this book. I would hazard a guess that pride has killed more marriages than lust. Julie does a great job of convincing her readers that if they want precious love to last, pride must be laid aside so the spouse can come astride and peace can abide. (Sorry, I just had a poetic moment). At times I was provoked enough to want to slap one of the characters on the side of the head and tell them to wake up and smell the Irish coffee. I had to keep telling myself, this is just a book.
This is not a lightweight work in more than one regard (it contains nearly 500 pages). Most of the action involves some aspect of romance, even among the married couples. This is not erotica, but the mention of sexual arousal and foreplay is not an infrequent visitor to the plotline. This book will not be confused with a Janette Oke story. I think it is healthy for Christians to acknowledge that they are human and have sexual appetites. This book might contain an excess of the sexual passion aspect, but the lesson is well delivered - sexual passion without God's love is a recipe for disaster. Decisions based on the heat of moment may freeze the blood in the future. So despite being prominent throughout the story, passion is not enthroned here. A wealth of scriptural references provide a counterbalance to the passion pitting desire to please oneself against desire to please God. Much of the conflict in the story arises within the characters dealing with this internal tug of war. Another cute element of conflict was the relationship between almost eleven-year-old Katie and a street Urchin named Cluny, a young teenager befriended by Brady. Katie's precocious comments massaged my funny bone.
The author seemed to take pains to spice up the story by introducing elements of the society in this timeframe. Thoroughly Modern Millie came to my mind as Lizzie's haircut was described in the beginning of the story. Ironically, the character pushing Beth to embrace modernism with her stylish new name of Lizzie and hairdo was named Millie. Things like Keds, toasters, Saltines, and basketball hoops made cameo appearances. I actually did some research to make sure the copy editor didn't mess up here and checked on a few dates to make sure they were around in 1922.
Julie even managed to smuggle in the dreaded submission clause from Ephesians. Her take on it was interesting: submission = respect. Men want to be respected above all else, and if they receive that precious commodity, they are able to cherish their wives, which is what women desire above all else. I'll buy that into philosophy though that is on the simplistic side of things. I had the audacity to include my interpretation of that passage in one of my books. One aspect of the spiritual tangent that I found perhaps out of tune with reality was the combination of Evangelical Christian jargon with Catholicism. I was raised as a Catholic in the 1950's and 60's. Perhaps we were behind the times in South Dakota, but Bible reading seemed to be something that was still the realm of the clergy at that time. I am aware the church has changed a lot since then.
There was a little mystique included which allows the romantic sleuths to engage their deductive reasoning. We're allowed to know that John Brady has a problem in his past and are given snitches of information to let us guess at what it is. That secret really drives the story since it seems to prevent John from letting himself accept Lizzie as a woman instead of just as a sister. Julie uses just enough hinting to give us insight, but not enough to totally solve the mystery. I had most of it figured out, but there were some surprising twists in the end that left me applauding the author. I suggest you get a copy and find out for yourself, unless you're afraid of emotional roller coasters.

My Favorite Book In "The Daughters of Boston" Series!
By Melanie
This is the third book I've read by Julie Lessman and, while I loved A Passion Most Pure and A Passion Redeemed, A Passion Denied is my favorite in the series! I just loved the characters in this book so much! While I loved a lot of the characters, my favorite was probably John Brady in this book. He had intrigued me from the previous book(s) so getting to know his character more and reading his story was great.
Another thing that I loved about A Passion Denied is that throughout the book we got to see more of Faith's and Charity's lives and how things are with them. Some things Charity said/did were so funny and just made me laugh! Katie O'Connor (Charity's sister) was similar in that I couldn't help chuckling sometimes because of the way she acted (especially regarding Cluny).
Forgiveness was a HUGE aspect of A Passion Denied and I loved that! It was so powerful to read and even made me tear-up a little bit. I loved all of the Bible passages that were in this book and how faith was a major part of the characters' lives.
While A Passion Denied had a lot of "passion" in it, it didn't bother me that much because most of it was between married couples and I even found it sweet (although a few times it was a little much for me). Because of that I would only recommend this book for mature readers who don't mind some slightly heated scenes.
A Passion Denied took me on a very entertaining ride and the book was really hard to put down! If you enjoy historical books with romance then I recommend the Daughters of Boston series, of which A Passion Denied is book three (make sure you read them in order). It's one of my favorites - I just loved the entire book! :) I am looking forward to reading A Hope Undaunted very soon.

A Tad Too Soap Opera-ish, But Otherwise a Fun Read
By MereChristian
Recently, I finished up author Julie Lessman's original romance trilogy. For background, she has written two separate trilogies. They focus on the fictional O'Connor family of Boston spanning from around just during WWI up to the middle of the Great Depression. In the third book of the original trilogy, A Passion Denied, the two protagonists are John Brady, the partner of Collin McGuire from the previous two books, and Elizabeth "Lizzie" O'Connor, Faith and Charity's (the female leads of the previous two books) younger sister.
The crux of the story is a simple one. Lizzie has been awed by Brady and in love with him for the past five years since she first met him, and he has mentored her in turn. He never though much of Lizzie's feelings for him, except when he tried to discourage them, until one day he just noticed that she was an adult now. No longer the gawky teenager he once knew, he found that he had now fallen for her in turn, but couldn't reciprocate. He had a dark secret from his past, one that he couldn't let go of his shame over, that made romance impossible.
What I liked about this story was that the whole cliched "dark secret" that so many of these types of romances have was pretty bad, yet not so bad. Don't get me wrong, what Brady feels bad about doing is horrible, even in today's morally loose environment, but it wasn't something that should have prevented him from moving on and having a future. God forgave him, and so did anyone else who thought about this situation for long. No, the problem was in Brady's head. He couldn't forgive himself.
I can sympathize. I think anyone can sympathize really. There are times we feel so unlovable, and horrible, vile, etc., that we assume no one can love us, or that we deserve no happiness. A big part of the story is John Brady learning that this is not true. We have forgiveness from God, and we can have it from other people too, if they are true Christians.
That was the other aspect of the characterizations that I liked. The author made clear that those who forgave, and accepted God's forgiveness of, others, as sufficient, were right. Meanwhile, those who did not do this, were wrong. And she did this with no overt sermonizing. It was very well-written, and showed a terrific growth in Lessman's writing abilities from her first book to this one.
The only problem I did have was that this story unfolded like a soap opera, and was way too implausibly done. The author tried to set it up where it would feel more "normal", but she failed. I felt like I was seeing a Christian version of some soap opera or cheesy (they are all cheesy from the few moments I have seen occasionally of them) Lifetime movie. A few times the plot just sort of "threw" me out of the story with it's absolute implausibility. I've seen much more ridiculous stories that were not presented as improbably, and had a better "flow" to the story.
While the delivery of some parts of the plot wasn't that great, the book in general, including what I commented on above, was a fun read.
