Keeping the Secret of the Bones
Could Leave Jack With Blood on His Hands
After his many adventures, Jack Hawthorne has finally settled down. Married to Espy, and with two sons, he's content to live the life of a mild-mannered university professor. That all changes when someone discovers the secret of the prophet's bones Jack buried in the desert thirteen years ago. With just a single phone call, Jack's back on the run...with even more at stake than ever before. Determined not to risk the lives of his family, he knows the only way to finally be safe is to deliver the bones once and for all.
Except they aren't there. Someone got to the unmarked grave in the Australian outback first, leaving Jack and Espy empty-handed. Desperate, the two begin another globe-spanning race, following the tiniest of clues, to find the one thing that will either save their family or tear apart everything they hold dear.

Review from a Man's Perspective
By Libraryboy
This is the third book in the Jack Hawthorn series. I have read the first two and was excited to see that the third book was being published. I knew that another great adventure was just waiting beyond the cover of the book.
This book finds Jack and Espy about 10 years after the end of "Serpent of Moses". They have settled into a regular family life in North Carolina. Jack has returned to the profession of teaching that he has dreamed of. They have a comfortable, stable life with two sons, one which has cystic fibrosis. And all it takes is one phone call to shatter their tranquil lifestyle. With his family in danger, Jack and Espy set out to recover the bones of the prophet, Elisha and the healing power that they hold. Being chased from country to country by the CIA and a clandestine group bent on protecting their secrets, this story takes you on an adventure never seen before. Can they track down the bones after so many years? Who is behind all of this danger his family is in? If he can find the bones, should he turn them over to the group threatening him or should he keep them to heal his son? Danger abounds and questions are answered, but you will only find out if you BUY THE BOOK!
Once again I was not disappointed with the writing style of Mr. Hoesel. The story hooks you from the beginning and takes you on a wild ride. He develops realistic characters, characters that make you cheer for them, characters that make you down when tragedy befalls them. Yes, I felt there were some issues with storyline, (ie - A couple on the run but can hop from country to country without fear of being stopped along the way, their children being kidnapped but the parents acting as if that happened to them every day and they had already gotten used to the ideal) but this is a fiction book, so I'll let it slide this time
Is this a guy's book? There doesn't seem to be any reason that a guy wouldn't read this book, unless they haven't read the other books in the series, then they just need to buy them all. The action, the adventure, the settings all will draw you into this book and keep you reading for hours
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.

Archaeological research, international settings, military and government groups, secret societies and action galore

Thirteen years after finding the bones of the profit Elisha, and a decade after discovering the staff of Moses, antiquities professor Jack Hawthorne is living the life of a family man. He is married to former university colleague Esperanza Habilla and is the father of two boys, one of whom has cystic fibrosis. For all the world, they are a normal family, far removed from the globetrotting adventures and heroics of their past. But one phone call from longtime friend and former CIA agent Jim "Duckey" Duckett throws them back into a whirlwind that endangers the one thing Jack treasures most: his precious family.
BLOOD AND BONE brings Jack full circle to where it all began, searching for the bones of a biblical prophet --- bones that have a healing power for which people have killed, and will kill again, to get them back.
Their boys have been kidnapped by a man who will do anything to acquire Elisha's bones. Jack and Espy need only procure the bones to trade for their sons, but one fact is painfully clear: the bones have disappeared. Jack had buried them long ago in the Australian outback and assumed that's where they would safely stay. But when the boys are kidnapped, he discovers that the bones have been stolen. Determined to rescue their sons at any cost, Jack and Espy begin an international journey, following clues and narrowly escaping enemies, to find the one thing that will reunite their family. Pursued by the CIA and a clandestine organization that protected the bones for thousands of years, the couple unravels secret codes, unearths long-hidden artifacts, and knits dangerous alliances. Jack knows that, despite impossible odds, there is no room for failure.
BLOOD AND BONE has a fascinating premise, good imagery, and plenty of Indiana Jones-style action, but suffers from a few problems. However, I want to precede my next comments by explaining that, while I'm a fan of archaeological adventure movies, this is my first novel in that genre. I felt it crossed the line from "rich in detail" to overly detailed. The academic explanations may be a bit much for the average reader. Additionally, I found many of the circumstances implausible, particularly the way they hopped from country to country with no passports or money while constantly being tailed. There was an uncomfortable lack of concern for their two kidnapped sons. Now and then there was mention of the boys, but seldom and lacking a realistic depth of emotion.
I also have to confess that, even after reading the book, I'm not sure of Jack and Espy's positions. How do two professors of antiquities acquire fighting skills and connections worthy of special ops marines? Perhaps this was explained in his previous books, ELISHA'S BONES and SERPENT OF MOSES. According to the novel's back story, the two spent years trotting the globe in search of treasured artifacts while dodging enemies and risking their lives.
That said, there is no downplaying the impressive research it took to write a book abounding in archaeological, historical and Biblical facts dating thousands of years. Don Hoesel combines this research with international settings, military and government groups, secret societies, and action galore. The author is well-skilled in the art of seamlessly melding fact with fiction. And because the Christian elements are minimal, this serves as a good crossover novel. Additionally, Hoesel wrapped it up with a satisfying conclusion with which readers will be pleased. The result is a distinctive, fast-paced story that will likely captivate fans of archaeological action and suspense.

leaves you wanting more

Hoesel has really grown as a writer, with tighter plotting and character development than any of his books so far. "Blood and Bone," the last (?) outing in his Elisha's bones trilogy, stands far above your average religious thriller. Exotic settings, sacred relics, ancient cults, likeable and funny protagonists, and authentic religious faith: This book has it all.
1) The action flows naturally from Brazil to North Carolina, Australia, England, Russia and the miles of catacombs winding below Paris. Exotic, evocative locales? Check.
2) The bones of old testament prophet Elisha, with the divine power to bring the dead to life, make their own return to stirring up trouble. Vanished, trouble-making sacred relic? Check.
3) The Priests of Osiris have been skulking around for thousands of years, protecting Elisha's bones. Hoesel brings to life the cult's violent history of internecine warfare and its evolution from an ancient priesthood into... something else entirely. He also uses the cult's nefarious activities as a springboard for musings on why an all-powerful God would allow the good and blameless to suffer. Evil, yet thought-provoking ancient cult? Check.
2) Jack Hawthorne, the ostensible protagonist, remains something of a cypher, but we have fun and clever Espy to compensate, even if she spends much of the book in tears. Her aversion to her archaeologist husband's tomb-desecrating ways also provides us with some of the book's most flat-out hilarious lines. Enjoyable protagonists? Check.
3) Jack and Espy are true believers, but their faith feels both authentic and unobtrusive. No matter what your religious background, you can enjoy this book, because Hoesel respects his reader's intelligence (and free agency) and never falls into the trap of hitting you over the head with his beliefs. I also found very refreshing how the characters' deep faith translated into a policy of avoiding bloodshed at all costs. I like these people. I want to live in a world with more people like this. Check and check.
I normally reserve 4- and 5-star ratings for "literary" fiction, but I very much enjoyed "Blood and Bone" and hope that Mr. Hoesel will continue to grow and evolve as a writer.
