About the Author
Michael Fletcher is the senior pastor of Manna Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and leads Grace Churches International, a network of 319 churches in 43 countries. Since Michael became pastor of Manna in 1985, it has grown from 350 to 5,000 active members. He has a passion to see other pastors step beyond their current leadership barriers and watch their churches become all God intends for them. He and his wife, Laura, have eight children and six grandchildren and make their home in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Essential Reading for Leaders

Another on my list of mandatory reads for church leaders, or leaders in training. Fletcher doesn't just diagnose the problems, but true to the book's title, offers clear, concise strategies to help see more people effected by the Kingdom.
Far from a religious grocery list of stagnant mandates, this work touches on some of the very human, key elements needed for sound leadership and service.
I suppose the greatest testament I can give to this book is that our Board read it when we were at 200 members; after a few years of changing priorities and working to develop more healthy structures, we passed 800, and we are nearing 1,000 members today. The majority of our congregants have met Jesus within the last two years, and this in a historically "dark" region of the American northeast. It's not God who needs to change to reach "dark" places, but the Christians who are serving in such regions. * ch:

Following this guide could destroy your church

Our current church leadership is using this as a guide in an attempt to create growth and change in our church. Our church is now bitterly divided. Fletcher tries to portray his ideas as being based on the love of Christ but the actions he suggests do not always reflect the example of Christ. In the wrong hands, his ideas prove to be even more harmful. I do not know Mr. Fletcher but the introduction touts the numbers he has acheived with his approach despite his statement that it is never simply about the numbers. I congratulate him on his success but don't make the mistake of believing that this book will do the same for you. Unfortunately, our church discovered this too late.

The Title says it all - very, very good!

Concise - clear - focused - and extremely helpful!!! Someone wrote a negative review of this book - which shocks me. This is THE most helpful book on Overcoming Barriers to church growth that I've ever read - and I've read well over 100 books on the subject.
Full of sound advice and the wisdom of experience.
