NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

For centuries the Four Lands enjoyed freedom from its demon-haunted past, protected by magic-enhanced borders from the dark dimension known as the Forbidding and the profound evil imprisoned there. But now the unthinkable is happening: The ancient wards securing the barrier between order and mayhem have begun to erode—and generations of bloodthirsty, monstrous creatures, fueled by a rage thousands of years in the making, are poised to spill forth, seeking revenge for what was done to them.

Young Elf Arling Elessedil possesses the enchanted means to close the breach and once more seal the denizens of the Forbidding in their prison. But when she falls into the hands of the powerful Federation’s diabolical Prime Minister, her efforts may be doomed. Only her determined sister, Aphen, who bears the Elfstones and commands their magic, has any hope of saving Arling from the hideous fate her captor has in store.

Meanwhile, Railing Ohmsford—desperate to save his imprisoned brother—seeks to discover if his famed but ill-fated ancestor Grianne is still alive and willing to help him save the world . . . no matter the odds or the consequences.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Terry Brooks's The High Druid's Blade.

From Booklist
Witch Wraith is the final book in Brooks’ Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy and a title that will be a mainstay in the public library’s fantasy collection. Wards of Faerie, Bloodfire Quest, and Witch Wraith are set 100 years after the events of Brooks’ High Druid of Shannara trilogy. The magical barrier that keeps the people who live in the Four Lands safe from the most evil and dangerous creatures is crumbling, and horrific revenging acts, thousands of years in the making, seem inevitable. The young Elf Arling can seal this barrier, but she has been brought under the control of the diabolical prime minster, making her efforts impossible. Her sister, Aphen, may be the only one who can save Arling and the fate of their world. For the first time in his career, the New York Times best-selling author Brooks is publishing each book in this trilogy just six months apart, ensuring readers will be clamoring for this conclusion of the Shannara universe story. --Alison Downs

let down by this book.....
By L Keeling
I waited and waited for this book to release and as soon as I got it, I started reading. All the quests going on, I thought for sure this was going to be great. Then it got to the parts I thought were supposed to be "epic"...and it just started going down hill. The first battle at Arishaig was indeed written nicely and I loved it. The battle at Arborlon, not so much. It was like oh yea super battle...blah blah blah skip skip skip...and done. When everyone meets up at the final stage, it was like oh hey, haven't seen you in awhile and BYE. Seriously, it was like my child telling a story when he is in trouble and leaving out all the details he thinks will get him in trouble. Redden's coma deal at the end...what was that? Also, what happened to everyone else? Did the once fierce and level headed Aphen turned whiney 5 year old go back to the Druids? What about all the other major support characters? Anything? Honestly, I am still mad at the ending of this book. The last what 50 pages make me want to scream. Having read all of the Shannara series and supporting books, I felt this was just a newer version of some of the older books. I love Terry Brooks, but this wasn't something I would recommend to anyone. Having said all this, someone will love it, someone will like it, and someone will hate it; it is just the matter of opinions.

New Low for Brooks
By Matt Tureck
I don't know if his books are ghostwritten now, or if he's just gotten really lazy, but this is yet another paint-by-numbers Shannara book.
No characters that aren't carbon copies of previous characters.
No plots that aren't recycled.
I loved his books for years, but i think I'm done at this point.

One great section (barely) saves the book for me
By D. Brennan
Spoiler alert

Finally! I picked up the third book of this trilogy ready for epic battles, resolution to the many plot lines and some grit. Witch Wraith should have concluded the Dark Legacy of Shannara series with a bang; after all the monsters are free from their centuries long prison and, driven by their dark lord, descend upon human and elf with unmatched ferocity. Our main characters are out and about on their various quests - bring life back to the Elchris which maintains the Forbidding, rescue a brother by resurrecting a witch, etc... Wait, I just used 'etc' in a book review. Does that mean the writing was a little formulaic and maybe a bit predictable...? Well...

If I sound less than excited about this book it is because I found some of the story a little too reminiscent of previous Shannara books. Terry Brooks even goes so far as to hang a lantern on that obvious problem, pointing out that 'history repeats itself'. Well, I guess that's one possibility. Another explanation would be that the author didn't have any exciting new ideas and went with the tried and true. Couldn't Brooks at least pick a different room for the changeling reveal? Could the druids actually win a battle when their fortress is besieged? Why win - we'll just release the guardian once most of us are dead and it will kill the invaders...

I also found the resurrection of the Elchris to be a disappointingly flat ending. Here we are - all out war between elves and the monsters; the dwarf army is arriving to support the elves and other allies are(hopefully) on the way; the elves are now in possession of the elfstones giving them a HUGE military boost; the main heroes are all in one place; there was a major change in enemy leadership; the Witch Wraith and her awesome magical powers is leading the monster charge, and the excitement is building.... And then....

The Elchris gets sorted out and everything is over... fizzle

Why?

At the end of the story, what has really changed.
- The druid order has been smashed (yet again) - does this make the 3rd, or 4th time this has happened? Whatever the count, this is a tired plot device.
- A few main characters have had personal life changes - getting the really hot girlfriend is fun but not epic in the true sense of the word.
- A few supporting characters die - druid deaths don't count as they usually die off anyway
- A human city gets sacked

Other than that, not much is changed. The BIG issues are back to status quo as the Forbidding is back in place and the elfstones are gone (again). There is, in effect, no resolution to the major points of the whole series.

The story therefore amounts, in the end, to a bunch of people running around on various missions, with the end result being nothing accomplished at some measure of personal suffering. Hmm. Maybe that works for some readers but I prefer to see some motion - forward or back - in the stories I read.

I give it 3 stars because of the very well written battle of Arishaig. Brooks did a great job of detailing the battle in a way that was both exciting and extended. This was by far and away my favorite part of the book. I just wish that this approach was taken to the battle of Arborlon. I changed my review of the first novel to a 2-star rating. Better to not start reading this series only to be disappointed with the lame ending.
