After visiting myriad places and eras in the first two volumes of this multiplatform, multivolume, multiauthor series, the three tweens Sera, Dak, and Riq find themselves starting this third book in 1850s Maryland. The coadventurers cross the path of the Underground Railroad, which has been taken over by the still mysteriously evil and not-yet-defeated SQ, and quite a bit of suspense ensues, especially considering the very personal elements introduced by Riq’s African American heritage. Although the quality of the dialogue continues to decline as the books roll on, the excitement actually builds well here, as does the increasingly satisfying combination of science, history, and fiction. The next title in the series is on its way this summer. Grades 4-6. --Andrew Medlar

Unfortunately, I thought this was the weakest book in the series so far. I thought that the author didn't seem to know who Dak and Sera were when she was writing these books. For example, Dak would never not know a history question, it's impossible. And he never really went on an in depth rant on history, the author alluded to it, but never backed it up with facts or dates.
I did like that we learned a little more about Riq, and he isn't so much of a jerk.
My main concern with all of these books is that they need to flash to the present to see the effects on the present day. I understand that they dont' want to give away anything concerning the three main characters, but they could at lease give a general representation on the present day.
Anyways, I will still be continuing with the series because I think it's a great concept.
