W. C. McRae is the coauthor of several travel guides, including Moon Utah and Moon Montana (both with Judy Jewell). He has also edited books for National Geographic and Mobil Guides and has written for websites like GORP.com and Expedia.com. In his spare time he earns money by writing polemics for a high-tech PR company. He makes his home in Portland, OR.
Judy Jewell graduated from Reed College and worked at Portland's renowned Powell's Books. Judy worked there, as a book buyer and manager, for 14 years then decided to write travel books. Judy is the author of several guidebooks, including Moon Utah and Moon Montana (also with Bill McRae). When she is not writing about the outdoors and travel, she is the lead technical writer at Camp Dusty Technical Services. She lives with her husband and dog in Portland, OR.

Good general overview of the parks and surrouding areas

This book gives a good general overview of the two parks and the surrounding areas including other activities that can be done in the Moab region, lodging and dining options. However, the two parks as well as Moab have a lot to offer so to offer a complete detailed overview would take a book about three times its size. With that said, Moon does a good job at pointing out the highlights and offering suggestions in a nice, easy to read and fairly compact book. It offers colored maps of each of the parks as well as one of southeastern Utah which is helpful. There are black and white photos throughout the book and the Moon series famous "highlight moons" to point out what they view as what "not to be missed".
If you are a person who loves to research a place in depth prior to a trip, then this book may possibly not be needed. However, if you are a person who does some research, but enjoys having something to carry with them on a trip, then this book will be beneficial to accompany a more detailed book on your interest such as hiking, off-roading, etc.
Since Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are havens for hikers, this book outlines the popular trails in each park, but certainly doesn't cover them all. It gives a very general overview of the trails. If you plan to do a lot of hiking within the parks, I would suggest a more detailed hiking book such as Falcon Guide's "Hiking Canyonlands and Arches National Parks", which I found invaluable.

Looking forward to using this guide on my upcoming trip to Moab. Has some useful information but probably nothing that you would not see in other guide books. More color photos would be a good addition.

This was helpful while planning our vacation. Gave some good ideas for mountain biking and hiking. Probably wouldn't have thought to go to Canyonlands before buying this book, and I'm so glad we did!
