Rosemary S. Caffarella is an emerita professor of education in the College of Agriculture and Life Science at Cornell University. Strongly prefer the 2nd edition to this 3rd one

In my doctoral studies, I learned program planning with the 1st edition of this book. Over the last 13 years, it has been at my side as I administered educational programs for museums, corporate training departments, and institutions of higher education. When the 2nd edition came out, I updated my own copy. Frequently, I purchased the book for my own staff.

When I learned a 3rd ed was out, I was thrilled because I hoped it would incorporate the many exciting technological developments since the 2nd edition was written. While it does do this, it also left online (and not in print) MANY of the helpful figures and exhibits that are at the heart of what make this an ongoing user's manual.

IF I were teaching a program planning course, I'd have to use this 3rd edition and spend the time pulling online exhibits (accessible with purchase of written text) to the attention of my students. As I practice program planning, however, I simply do not have the time.

The third edition is already shelved (I'll pull it only to look for some insights on new technologies); the 2nd edition is back on my desk.Planning Programs for Adult Learners: A Practical Guide for Educators, Trainers, and Staff Developers, 2nd Edition

D. J. H. Garling is an Emeritus Reader in Mathematical Analysis at the University of Cambridge. He has 50 years' experience of teaching undergraduate students in most areas of pure mathematics, but particularly in analysis.

Great Introduction for Undergraduates

A really great introduction to real analysis which demands basically no prerequisites, something that fitted me very well. There is even a brief summary of set/number theory (in the Prologue) which is developed further in chapter two to deal with Abeilian groups,rings, fields, morphisms and some interesting -if not immedeately useful for this book- rudimentary number theory. For the better prepared student the author states clearly that the first section (chpts. 1,2 on set and number theory can be omitted but they're still nice to have in my opinion.) My only problem with that element of the book was that the first two chapters introduced a lot of new notation, sometimes without any clear explanation of what it meant. However, this is not vital to the understanding of the book and thus a pretty tiny drawback. The treatment of sequences and series and convergence and continuity to be particularly crisp and understandable. There is also a lot of "additional" material such as an introduction to Fourier series and a wide range of applications, for example the Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function.

All in all a very concise book (even with the prologue), just shy of 300 pages but still comprehensive in its description of the fundamentals of real analysis. This encyclopedia provides well-written definitions of terms and concepts surrounding issues of life and death. It also includes very practical and sometimes quirky information (one of the 13 appendixes is a four-page table of the odds of death from various causes; another is a record of U.S. war deaths). There is also a guide to end-of-life care at home. The more than 560 entries define terms related to culture, economics, history, legislation, medicine, religion, and sociology. Examples include Burial at sea, Condolence letters, Day of the Dead, Fraud in the funeral industry, Hospice, Oregon Death with Dignity Act, Seance, Suicide, and Victorian mourning dress. Each entry concludes with bibliographic references. A classified bibliography lists articles, books, and videos.

Other widely held works with similar names--Macmillan Encyclopedia of Death and Dying (2002) and Encyclopedia of Death and Dying (Routledge, 2002)--support and augment each other because of differences in treatment and scope. This new work fills an important niche, explaining a wide variety of terms with clarity and precision. An example is the definition of Wrongful death, credited to FindLaw for the Public online, which explains legal criteria and personal behavior. The Macmillan encyclopedia only mentions the term in its entry on Rock music, with no definition. In fact, there is surprisingly little overlap between the title under review and other works. Using entries related to death and music as an example, while the Macmillan encyclopedia has entries on classical music, the Auschwitz orchestra, death motifs, masses for the dead, and the Orpheus myth, the Facts On File volume has entries on Dirge, Jazz funeral, Music therapy for the dying, and Taps. The subject of death is much too large for one author or group of authors. There is much to be learned from all the mentioned works.

The straightforward, factual approach toward this highly emotional topic is well presented. The subtle differences in terms and jargon are carefully explained. This is a valuable encyclopedia, highly recommended to public and academic libraries. Linda Loos Scarth

I've been out of seminary for over 15 years. Most of the lectures I heard, material I read, and notes I took are lost to me now, but some resources linger. A few textbooks and notebooks continue to be useful as I seek out answers for present ministry issues. The reason I share this is because I view Advanced Strategic Planning by Aubrey Malphurs in the same light.

This book is a living resource, with a treasure of practical insights and leadership principles that can be referred to over and over again. It is a must-have resource for every conscientious church leader who is serious about developing a healthy, growing church environment.

Shepherding pastors who do not have a leadership gift or pastors who have little patience for the practical elements of church leadership may struggle to finish the book because it is exhaustive, detailed, and rather technical. But those who feel burdened to nurture a healthy church culture with a vision of maximizing their congregation's Kingdom potential will find great value in it.

Malphurs uses the metaphor of sailing throughout the book to illustrate, explain, and model the benefits of strategic planning. He breaks down the process in great detail, explaining the why, what, and how of mission, vision, values, and strategy. Each chapter includes summaries of the main points as well as practical, helpful questions at the end to help you reflect on personal applications for your ministry context. A creative and well crafted "coming of age" tale of one teen girl's life and times

Hiding In Hawk's Creek by Brenda Chapman is the story of one young girl's search for contentment and escape from the troubles of her family and home life. Following fourteen-year-old Jennifer Bannon through her decision to spend the summer with her grandmother in a place called Hawk's Creek (and her plans never to return home), Hiding In Hawk's Creek carries its readers through an original and entertaining story of friendship, darkness and pain, racial intolerance, love, and considerable suspense. A welcome addition to the reading list of children ages 10 and older, Hiding In Hawk's Creek is very highly recommended as a creative and well crafted "coming of age" tale of one teen girl's life and times.

A Darned Shame--Contains Spoilers

It's a darned shame that Hancock didn't begin this book where she actually had "part 4" placed in Book 3. If she had, and then devoted the entirety of Book 4 to Abramm's and Maddy's sufferings and whatnot, she could then have created a Book 5 that would finally resolve things. Instead, we get this Book Four, which is a pale shadow (shadow reference not intended as any part of Hancock's "shadow" themes) of the previous books.

Book Four is incredibly long. There's easily enough material for two books, but the author didn't go that route. What she did instead was take us all over the world to end up in Kiriath again in some kind of weird non-ending. She didn't tie up all the loose ends (her "ending" of the character of Simon, Abramm's uncle, is more confusing than inspiring) and although Abramm gets his throne back (without even being in the country) I have no idea how the story ended. Yes, I read until the last page. But I still don't get the ending. It's as if Hancock didn't know how the story ended either, and decided to just stop with a few allusions to things that might happen. For instance, the kingdoms of Kiriath and Chesedh MIGHT unite (which would solve one problem, but create another); the Mataians might be outlawed (in a country that prided itself for its freedom of religion), and so on.

Worse yet, all the seams are starting to show. Abramm's many (many, many, many) forays into introspection, self-doubt, and doubt in Eidon, which were at first believable and later proof that he hadn't gotten too big for his britches, are now just tiresome. I don't know about others, but if I had seen the hand of God up close and personal as Abramm had with Eidon so many times on so many occasions--spoken directly with him and had him verbally and literally respond, as Eidon did, I'd have a lot to kick myself for if I continued to let doubt beat me into defeat, as it does with Abramm. I know this is probably some sort of parallel to the children of Israel in the Old Testament, but it's tiresome, not inspiring. At the end of a character arc, we like to think the character has grown and changed, but the plain fact is that even after his experience in the Dragon City, Abramm is still just as full of doubt as ever. It only takes a minor setback to bring it out again, such as his temper tantrum with the regalia. So now he's going back to Kiriath, and he's triumphant and full of faith...or is he? What will it take this time for him to become doubt-filled and self-pitying again?

And probably a quarter of the book is taken up by the most contrived, artificial "he/she doesn't love me" story I've ever seen. Abramm's sister, left raped and pregnant by her ex-husband at the end of Book 3, is married "in name only" to Abramm's best friend Trap (who has secretly loved her for years) in this book, but since Trap thinks she doesn't love him and she thinks Trap doesn't love her, they wander around being miserable throughout most of the book, and it's just a waste of pages.

It's the abhorrent structure of this book and book three, along with the pages and pages of irrelevancies that really could and should've been chopped (trust me, we'd never have missed them) that ruin the last two books and take a terrific story down with it. I couldn't rate this story as a 2 because to Amazon that means "I didn't like it" and that would be a lie. I did LIKE it. I'd probably give it 2 1/2 if Amazon allowed halves. There were parts of books three and four that were just flat-out wonderful. But they didn't add up to two wonderful books, or even one wonderful book between them. They added up to two mediocre books with wonderful moments, but both of them still left me disappointed at the end, and with a story like this, it's doubly sad.

Good 'til the end

I was initially worried that the last book in the series would be a let-down. Thankfully, that was not the case. Hancock finished up her series nicely, continuing to pound home universal truths without feeling repetitive. The world that she created, where the ethereal spiritual world takes physical form, is an excellent environment for exploring how our daily lives are impacted by that which we can not see. Equal parts entertainment and introspection, this series did more for my relationship with God than many of the theological-type books you often see on the shelves at your local bookstore.

One of the very best bioenergetics books

Thorughly loved this book. I got a much greater understanding of the oedipal problem and how important the understanding is to regaining emotional health. It's the tip of the whole rotten enchilada of neurosis! It's like an iceberg! 95 percent of our oedipal issues are submerged in or subconscious, waiting to be resolved. Then a person we want to be intimate with comes along just like the Titanic and slams into the frozen mass below the surface and we realize, hopefully, just how big and solid that iceberg really was. I also really liked the parts about the nature of fate. It seems like a strange subject to be in a psychology book but Dr. Lowen has bravely approached how we end up manifesting our subconscious drives over and over again for better or worse, and how we can use the awareness for better instead of worse. It's that pesky repitition compulsion again!

Small case studies are integrated into the book and it progresses on explaing the nature and depth of the oedipal problem. It is never boring and not so technical that it is difficult to read. On the contrary, it is warm and conversational, but fully reveals the gravity and seriousness of resolving these issues so the we may experience love, pleasure and pain with the full response of our bodies and cooperation of the ego. Let's not live in our heads anymore people! Strongly reccomend this book. It is also nicely bound and printed.

Create Your Destiny

Have you ever met someone who is afraid to be who she or he is?
This could be the person who won't open their heart up, reach out and take up a cause.
I love to read books like this book, because in reading such a book, one is free to ask questions, and demand the best of the author.
Alexander Lowen gives you so much information in this book on the beginnings of frustrations, limitations, rejections and anger, in a way that makes you say, "Yeah! That is how it really is."
This book, like Lowen's other books, are not light reading, but instead insists that you look deeply into your heart and claim your feelings.
This book is also not a trendy "self-help" book, but instead a book replete with clinical and real life examples that you will find yourself growing, as you read this book.
This is an author who I would love to meet, and just be fully in the moment with, without much dialogue - just to share a thank you for writing information that helps us all to explore the human condition.

Very interesting about "doing" and "being"

I recommend this book to anybody interesting in learning how muscular tensions, in an unconsious way, can severely affect the quality of life. It contains lots of information about how muscles hold back emotions.

About the Author
Michael A. Regan is at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professor with Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden. Between September 1997 and April 2007 he managed the Human Factors and Simulation Group at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), in Melbourne, Australia. Michael is the senior editor and a co-author of the first book on driver distraction - "Driver distraction: Theory, Effects and Mitigation", published by CRC Press in 2008 - and initiated and co-chaired the First International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in September 2009. Michael's research interests focus on driver distraction, human interaction with intelligent transport systems (ITS), driving simulation, driver training and human error. He sits on the Editorial Boards of 4 peer-reviewed journals, including Human Factors, and is the author of around 200 publications. He also sits on two Australian, and one international, Standards Committees. In November 2009 Michael received the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia's Cumming Memorial Medal for highly esteemed human factors and ergonomics research and application in the field of transportation safety. John D. Lee is the Emerson Electric professor in the department of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also holds an appointment in the department of civil and environmental engineering. His research focuses on the safety and acceptance of complex human-machine systems by considering how technology mediates attention. Specific research interests include trust in technology, advanced driver assistance systems, and driver distraction. He is a coauthor of the textbook "An Introduction to Human Factors Engineering" and is the author or coauthor of over 120 articles. John is a co-editor and a co-author of the first book on driver distraction - "Driver distraction: Theory, Effects and Mitigation", published by CRC Press in 2008. He received the Ely Award for best paper in the journal Human Factors (2002), the best paper award for the journal Ergonomics (2005), and a Donald E. Bently Faculty Fellowship. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences committee on human factors and has served on several other committees for the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Lee serves on the editorial boards of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making; Cognition, Technology and Work; International Journal of Human Factors Modeling and Simulation; and is the associate editor for the journal Human Factors. Trent W. Victor, PhD, is currently working as Senior Specialist in Safety Analysis and Human Factors at Volvo Technology, a research and innovation company in the Volvo Group. In addition he is Competence Area Leader for Behavior in Accident Causation at SAFER vehicle- and traffic safety centre at Chalmers technical university. Trent has formal training in psychology (specialized in attention, vision, perception, eye-movements), computer science, human factors, and human-machine interaction. Trent has held various positions at Volvo Technology since 1996 including Product Area Manager for Driver & Work Environment, and Group Manager for Cognitive Ergonomics. Trent has over 15 years work experience in design and evaluation in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems, from research to product introduction phases, especially on In-Vehicle Information Systems and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, and most specifically on Driver Awareness Products. Trent holds over 13 patents or patent applications within the product areas of real-time distraction countermeasures, drowsiness alert, interaction support (workload management), attention-sensitive driving support, impairment detection, and distraction evaluation tools. He has been responsible for the spin-off of a computer vision eye tracking company where he sits on the board of directors. Trent co-chaired the First International Conference on Driver Distraction and Inattention, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in September 2009. He is the author of more than 30 publications including journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, technical reports.
