The business benefits of lower energy consumption are clear: lower energy costs, energy tax avoidance, selling excess CO2 credits, immediately adding savings to the bottom line and improved competitiveness. However, with a need to focus on day to day business management activities, implementing energy reduction programmes stretches the capabilities and know-how of responsible managers.
Kit Oung’s Energy Management in Business is an expert's guide to energy reduction. It covers four important aspects of managing energy: strategy for successful implementation, available tools and techniques, generating sustainable quick wins and active management involvement.
This book offers distilled practical concepts with real life case studies chosen to build insight, and illustrate how managers and engineers can relate to a broad range of energy reduction opportunities.
We take energy for granted, like the air we breathe. We need to engage employees with energy management in two ways. In a more general sense, for those using energy for normal working practices, awareness and behaviour change are key. For those with more direct influence over energy using systems, engagement is also fundamental.
Energy Management in Business places the process firmly in the context of commercial and industrial business practice. The book is an excellent companion for any organisation seeking ISO 50001 certification and a reduced energy consumption, as well as those that simply wish to better understand the options, strategies and risks that every business now faces.

Review
'Compulsory reading in any organization seeking to reduce its energy consumption.'
Luc Hens, International Journal of Environment and Pollution
...There is an urgent need to build capacity in sound energy management and this book aims to do just that. It is a well written guide to energy management which covers the operational and strategic levels, as well as tools and techniques for the energy manager. The many flow charts and diagrams help illustrate the text and the many case studies help the reader see the application of the techniques of energy management in real situations... --Dr Steven Fawkes
Anyone with an interest in the energy sector will be able to follow and understand the basic principles presented in the book. In this respect the book certainly provides a framework for thought and implementation. It satisfies its initial purpose of introducing and analyzing the topics of energy management and present energy reduction opportunities in the business context. It is therefore an excellent source for practitioners, academics, students and anyone in general who wishes to gain a deeper understanding of energy management and the benefits/risks that businesses face.
SEEJE Magazine, Issue 21, 2013
...the book is an excellent guide to the background and the practicalities of the implementation of energy reduction programmes. It introduces all necessary concepts to the busy manager and environmental expert. It offers this information in a most readable and accessible way, also for non-experts. This makes the book unique in the wide and fast-increasing variety of the publications on energy saving management. It is compulsory reading in any organisation seeking to reduce its energy consumption. --International Journal of Environment and Pollution, vol. 53, nos. 3/4
... a good book for managers looking to broaden their understanding of the challenges in cutting energy use. --The Environmentalist, August 2013

Hardly comprehensible
By Don
My overall perception is that this book was written carelessly, in haste and did not undergo any proofread. It has a number of serious issues which altogether disqualify it as a worthwhile read.
Number one: structure. For people who had anything to do with implementation of 6Sigma, Lean Management etc. or have worked at a well-run utility/energy company, most of the things covered in this book, including case studies, will be understandable. It would have made a decent "theory refreshment", if written in a rather uninteresting way (but to each his own - this is just my personal opinion). If you are not from the field, however, large parts of the book make a poorly structured patchwork of information. The rest can be found in any decent change management guide.
Number two: language. I would venture so far as to describe it as atrocious: apart from resembling in several cases an operating instruction, and in most part a corporate pep-talk, peppered with grammatical, syntax, and even vocabulary errors, needless repetitions, convoluted sentences, distorted sentence structures, mental shortcuts, words used in a wrong meaning or context. While people who spent their lives in corporations would be able to navigate through it, the author should really employ a reviewer to proofread it. Due to chaotic narration and inept use of the language, as well as frequent ramblings on topics not clearly anchored in the narration (although if you concentrate, you can follow the path of reasoning), the author often comes across as lacking mental discipline and the ability to synthetize, which was probably not his intention.
Number three: facts. Mr. Oung should have employed also a technical reviewer. There are some factual mistakes in the book that would make an average student of engineering cringe; in most part, they do not contradict the point made by the author, some are purely theoretical, and most of them apparently result from his "mental shortcuts" and carelessness - if you make the effort and know the topic you get the idea that he had something else in mind, but they compromise the credibility and make reading more of a chore than a pleasure.
All in all, the book probably has some potential; the author clearly has knowledge and experience, but for all its shortcomings the book resembles a first draft. For a reader who's at least moderately knowledgeable in the energy industry, it's rather a "I kinda get what you mean" exercise, and a straining one; for anyone else, it's hardly readable.
