In this star-studded autobiography, Clive Davis shares a personal, candid look into his remarkable life and the last 50 years of popular music as only a true insider can.
In the history of popular music, no one looms as large as Clive Davis. His career has spanned more than 40 years, and he has discovered, signed, or worked with a staggering array of artists: Whitney Houston, Janis Joplin, Simon and Garfunkel, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Dionne Warwick, Carlos Santana, The Grateful Dead, Alicia Keyes, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Aretha Franklin, to name a few. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and hosted the world's highest profile parties.
In this personal account, Davis tells all, from becoming an orphan in high school and getting through college and law school on scholarships, to being falsely accused of embezzlement and starting up his own record company, J Records. His wealth of experience offers valuable insight into the evolution of the music business over the past half-century and into the future.
Told with Davis's unmatched wit, frankness, and style, Clive exposes a trove of never-before-heard stories - some hilarious, others tragic, all revealing - that will captivate and inspire all music lovers.

I'll start by saying I have a bittersweet opinion of Mr. Davis. He's very well-spoken, determined and is a $$$$ maker. He's also destroyed many careers along his path to affluence. I personally knew one of the artists he took on that refused to be a disco or pop queen. He scored Whitney for that mission. He devotes one paragraph to this woman in this book that called him out which included "I wish there was a better solution for this situation". There was . Let her and others out of their contracts and concentrate on Whitney, the other Disney show chick and the other few has beens trying to revive their careers.
Anyway, (call up the PC police) but I always wondered how this Jewish man obtained the surname of Davis. I literally bought the book for the answer to this question. He explicitly admits that he hasn't a clue either. I know the answer but it is mine.
Now, here's where I have an issue. The first quarter of this book borders on an "I was born a poor black child" theme. It almost became nauseating. He was supposedly "orphaned" when he was the ripe age of adulthood at 18. Many of us may have had parents that died on us at 5 years of age. Some of us had parents that are still here today but we're never there for us at day 1, if you can do understand. Seems he had a great relationship with his parents for whatever time he had with them. 18 years is a long time.
So, then he was left homeless and poor with only the $10,000 they left him to buy a car to go to school in.....the 50's. All I know us my ex brother-in-law's 1979 Trans Am had a sticker price of $10K and we were flabbergasted. Clive must have bought himself the most expensive car in the world at the time which was a '57 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. There is also name dropping of his mega rich relatives that helped him trek to high school uphill both ways in the snow. This is also the same Brooklyn high school that slovenly Barbra Streisand slummed to as well as many other well known, well connected....ahem, people of the same religion. I just find it hard to believe that Clive was sharing bad cafeteria food alongside the parking lot attendants and grease monkeys this "high school" was pumping out......but he made it out of da barrio and landed a scholarship to Harvard. Kudos! (Davis)
"The man with the golden ears"? Da man with some cash to advance and connections to get radio airplay is more like it.
Then he's trying to cash in on his bisexuality. Puke.
This is all as fake as Barry Manilow's face now as well as Better Midler's hell ride to fame and fortune in the bathhouse where they all met (with Clive's legs in the air).
What a man!

"INSPIRING, CAPTIVATING, AND INTRIGUING!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Chief Creative Officer of Sony Music, Clive Davis, and Anthony DeCurtis, who holds a Ph.D in American literature deliver a fascinating biography of a brilliant man who devoted forty years to the music industry. Clive Davis portrays the story of his life, a colorful memoir of where it all began, and what led him to success. A man who gave everything he strived for to make his own dreams a reality, while working side-by-side with countless artists. In addition, Clive Davis tells the amazing stories never before revealed through the inside scenes of J Records in the evolution of the music business. This personal account of his life will make you smile, but will also tug at the heartstrings. As the music industry grew with recordings of popular music, Clive Davis worked closely with superstars, who became icons in music history. He is proud to tell of the special years as he helped Dionne Warwick, Barry Manilow, Whitney Houston, and many others. However, Clive Davis also tells about his struggles while growing up, his feelings as an orphan in high school, and what it took to get through college and law school. He describes his strengths as well as the obstacles that he endured as he began his own record company. His unique writing style, which is heartfelt and emotional, is also thought-provoking. This endearing memoir becomes more-and-more interesting as we read about his work with Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, and other artists who climbed to the top of the charts. His experience through forty years of his career is valuable to the future success of the music industry. As the stars became icons, Clive Davis hosted the elite parties, while achieving his Lifetime Grammy award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Motivating, insightful, and entertaining. Highly recommended!
