About the Author
John Davis is a senior student of A. H. Almaas and a teacher of the Diamond Approach. He is also a professor of psychology at the Metropolitan State College of Denver and a senior adjunct faculty member at the Naropa Institute.

A Good Summary, But How Many Can Use It?

A.H.Almaas' diamong approach is a powerful spiritual practice that deals with the unconcious barriers to enlightenment that other spiritual practices overlook. And Davis' book is an excellent summary of the subject.
Unfortunately the diamond approach is not available to most people. It can't be practiced on your own. Furthermore, Almaas' own books are difficult to get through.
A more accesible approach to this objective can be found in Susan Thesenga's "The Undefended Self."

Diamond Approach in easily understood fashion

Davis is a senior student of Hameed Ali (pen name A.H. Almaas) and a teacher of the Diamond Approach. In this book he takes the major themes of this approach and outlines them in an easily understood fashion, demonstrating each with quotes from Ali's work. In the inspiring epilogue Davis describes three capacities that will serve you in your spiritual journey. The flame of the search is that inner fire, that itch in your soul that calls you to look deep within yourself. Then, allowing yourself to not know, there arises a guidance. This guidance does not give you a direction but brings you deeper into the present and helps you to question all those old stories you have told yourself for years. The third capacity is the love of truth, not for what it will get you, but for its own sake. Loving just what is. These capacities will bring up all the obstacles for you to deal with. Davis explains how the obstacles serve you: "Through your hurt, you will find the compassion to tolerate the hurt and go deeper. Through your shame, you will come to the sense of dignity that allows you to open more. Through your fear of aloneness, you will discover the support you need to persevere with confidence. In your reactivity, you may find that you have projected your past hurts into the present, and through it, you will come to an unshakable acceptance of your life. All the qualities and dimensions of Essence are available to you to further your inquiry into the truth."
His closing words: "You don't have to do it all at once, just the next little bit. I invite you to turn toward the presence of your life as it is right now, in this moment."

Excellent orientation to the Diamond Approach for a person not familiar with it

Are you interested in finding out a bit about the Diamond Approach, but you find the writings of A. H. Almaas to be so numerous that you don't know where to begin?
If so, then this relatively short book might serve you well.
After reading the book, I looked for a local group that is practicing the Diamond Approach, and joined it. Three weeks ago I attended my first weekend workshop. The workshop focused on practicing Inquiry, usually within groups of 3 people.
I believe that in the arena of spiritual development, each person must find approaches that fit that particular person. This book gives enough information for you to decide if the Diamond Approach appeals to you; or perhaps not. You decide.
The book is written in an engaging style; and it is well organized. The author keeps in mind that the book's reader is likely to be a curious person who is not yet familiar with the teachings of A. H. Almaas. A few of those teachings are included in this book, in the form of selected excerpts taken from some of Almaas' earlier books. Personally I find the writing of the author to be more readily accessible than the writings of Almaas. So for a beginner this book is a fine place to start. If you are already experienced in reading Almaas, then this book might not be for you.
I wish you well on your journey of spiritual learning. My experience is that the journey is worth the effort.
